New Motor Home

I paid sales tax on a new motor home this year will it be a tax right off. The motor home was new and has a bathroom and sleeping area just like a house. I paid cash for it.

1) The fact that the motor home has bathroom and sleeping facilities means that it could qualify as a 2nd home (assuming that it also has dining facilities). If it qualifies as a 2nd home, the interest paid can be deductible as mortgage interest. As you are not paying any interest, there is no deduction.

2) You may be able to deduct the sales tax if you itemize and you choose to deduct your state and local sales taxes instead of your state and local income taxes. You add them both up, and deduct the greater amount (but not both). Note: If Congress does not act, this deduction goes away and will be unavailable for 2010. This deduction is quite popular and I expect it to be extended but you never know with Washington.

As long as it as sleeping, dining and restroom facilities it can be considered a second home.

You can deduct mortgage interest on up to two homes so you could deduct the interest from your main home plus the interest (if any) from the motor home.

Lastly, never take tax advice from a salesperson. They well tell you anything if it makes you purchase the item. You wouldn't believe the stuff that clients have told me that a salesperson told them.

I had a good friend pass away and his wife needs to sell their motor home. It has been garage kept is in excellent condition and only has 9,000 miles on it. It is located in the Chicago area, and I am sure you could buy it for a song

Take it to one of your local RV dealers and see if they will try to sell it for you...on consignment. Not all will want to do this, but some might.

The value of course is all depend on the make, model, floor plan and how well equipped. Your headline says it's a new motorhome, but are you saying that it's a 2009...or saying what the condition is like new.

An older vehicle with only 9,000 miles can have more service issues than the same vehicle with 50-60,000 miles. For example, a vehicle that has not been driven in years will have tires & brake lines with dry rot; can need all new belts, hoses, etc for the same reason; all kinds of junk on the fuel tank (water, rust, etc.); if it's been stored but not winterized properly, then plumbing lines can be broken (and the toilet as well if it froze); then there can be issues with the generator;

All I'm trying to say is this, if you're looking at buying this RV, just go over it carefully.
