How come the bobbin on my New Home sewing machine keeps skipping?
P3263712

When I thread the needle I can catch the bobbin and as soon as I start sewing the needle thread will go into the cloth but the bobbin thread will not. I reset the tension on the bobbin and put a new needle in and still doesn't work!

Try turning the needle 180 degrees and reinserting. And/or change to a larger size needle. The two most common causes of skipped stitches are needle in backwards and needle too small for the fabric.
Dirty machine, bad needle, wrong needle system and timing problems can also cause it... but the timing problems are exceedingly rare.

Try the fast fixes first, then drop me a note if it's still skipping.

new home sewing machine 508 user manual?
new_home_656b_01

I have inherited a New Home Sewing Machine model 508 with no user manual. I have been in touch with Jahome and they say that it went out of prodcution over 35 yrs ago and I will not get hold of a manual. I have searched high and low on internet. Does anyone pocess a manual for a 508, and if so would they be as kind to email me a copy please?
Thanks

Try your local sewing machine repair shops... they typically have file cabinets full of manuals, taken from traded-in machines that were trashed. Also consider asking in the yahoo group "wefixit", a group for vintage sewing machine repairs -- lots of knowledgeable people in the group. You may find someone who recognizes that the 508 was the same as the XYZ with a couple of differences, and that the XYZ manual will do just fine for you.

I have a New Home sewing machine. Sometimes it starts clanging like a train screeching to a stop. Why?
new_home_656b_02

I had it recently serviced and it worked like a charm for a couple of months.

Check the shuttle, that is the part that the bobbin attaches to. Sometimes this happens if there is dust or thread caught. Usually the part that the bobbin locks into will come out and it can be cleaned. I clean mine after each use, with an old toothbrush. Good Luck

My New Home sewing machine won't back stitch all the time. Is there anything that I can do?
New Home machine - cover plate close up

I don't want to put it in the shop if I don't have too, I am short on funds. What could be the problem? most of the time it doesn't work and when it does it only does for a little while. I tried taking the throat plate off and cleaning everything but that doesn't help.

Don't forget oil, too, if the manual so specifies.

I can't guess at the cause, but I can give you a couple of workarounds:

1) set stitch length to 0, take a few stitches, set stitch length to normal, sew seam, set stitch length to 0 to tie off

2) set stitch length to normal, sew seam, but hang on to the fabric to keep it from feeding for a few stitches at beginning and end of seam.

  • Stitch-n-Thyme: Another Goal: New Home Sewing Machine

Remember this beauty? I am pretty ashamed of myself. I have owned this for a little less than a year (about ten months) and haven't touched it until yesterday. Honestly, I was so worried about breaking it that I hesitated to even thread it. Using this machine was on my list of things to do before I left for Italy the last time and I never got to it. This time (since I have ten days left) I thought I might give the sheath dress a try on the New Home. So, toss another goal on that pile ! My main man, Gramps , taught me how to thread it oh so long ago. And when I pulled it out in the morning, I almost turned back. I thanked my lucky stars for this amazing blog  that contained a wealth of information of exactly the flavor I needed: how to thread. Susan posted an array of Singer manuals that all had different threading styles. My New Home matched that of the Singer 15-91 and so I was off. It took me an hour to thread the machine. I told you, I was scared!  Then I started her...
