New Home Floor Plan

Hi,

I just bought a new home - love the floor plan but not the kitchen. The previous owners have put granite floors, stone tiles for countertop, maple cabinets and white appliances. The ganite is black with brown spots like pattern - it is similar to the photos posted in the previous discussion named "Kitchens I have designed". The countertop is light brown with brown grout and the maple cabinets are the light colored kind. If you can imagine it - nothing goes together in the kitchen.

I am not sure if I want to change the granite floors as that extends to the family room (open plan). Currently the walls are beige and I am planning on changing that to brown (not very dark but dark). What else should I change in the kitchen to make it look look beautiful? I am looking around in the forum and see very talented and creative people here - so, I am hoping to get some opinions about this. Please do let me know. I really appreciate it!

as a contractor and without seeing the kitchen, here are my initial thoughts,leave the floor as is is the most expensive to change out. I would consider changing the countertops to a some what lighter color and going with a solid surface like cambria or corian. also change the wall color find a complimentary shade your idea for a lighter brown is good as thet are very popular colors right now. Ithink you should also change your white appliances out for stainless steel. lastly if they dont have them already find some nice pulls for your cabinet doors and drawer fronts .they add a lot ..good luck

We chose a floor plan option that had never been done by the builder. After starting construction they realized they would have to greatly reduce the size of a walk-in closet to make the necessary changes. We specifically chose the upgrade because of the enlarged closet. I would not have chosen this house if I knew it would turn out the way it has. They never even offered to get our input on the changes to be made. They just changed our house and expect us to be happy with it. What can I do?

If its drastic than pull out and seek a lawyer. If you can live with it than use it as a bargaining tool to get some more upgrades but they pay. Hey get the backyard lanscaped with grass and concrete. Get some upgrades in kitchen or bath area. Be creative if you still want the house. If you dont than walk away.

Just wanted to know..

Certainly you can, even ones you designed yourself. The good builders will gladly accept it. The bad builders try to stick to a certain group of floor plans for their ease and try to get out of building your floor plan.
Many people chose a floor plan from thousands offered on line, purchase it and give it to the builder. A small fee to get exactly what you want.

The kitchen/dining area, living and family room, plus an office area can be seen at once. Any suggestion on how to paint each area?

Paint the walls the same color throughout. If you're looking for a warm look to cozy up such a large space, try a color like a lite terra cotta or a caramel. If you like the large space then go with lighter color like an off white with a hint of blue or green.

I would tie the kitchen and dining area together with the same colored accents. Kitchen accessories, drawer pulls, window coverings and other decor would match the things in the dining area like the chair covers, place setting and other items.

Living and family room furniture should be situated into a couple seating arrangements and the decor should be of the same color family. One to face the entertainment center and maybe one to face the kitchen area so the chef can chat with family while they cook.

Office area can be somewhat out of the way....maybe with a decorative screen to seperate it a bit from the activities in the LR/FR but still be in the same color family as the decor of the LR/FR.

You can try pull together the color families of the kitchen/dining areas with the LR/FR areas. For example...strong accents of blue and green in the kitchen and minor accents of blue and green in the LR. The reverse the idea with strong accents of reds and golds in the LR with minor accents of reds and golds in the kitchen.

One other thing to consider is what type of flooring you have. Maybe if you have carpeting you could try to pull some colors out of that and choose one for a wall color.

I am looking for a website were I can customize my own modular home floor plan for free and that would let me customize a plan to suit my needs and also give me a price for the home once I'm done with the customization. Can anyone help me out please? Also any good websites for modular manufactured homes for maine and new hampshire. Thank you. :)

Actually most manufactures offer this as part of their service. You can choose just about everything you want just like a custom home.
