How do I design the framing plans for a new home?

If it is standard framing it can be done without an engineer. Begin with the UBC (Uniform Building Code) volume two. The trusses will still need to be engineered though. I would suggest hiring a licensed civil engineer to do it all, it is pretty cheap.

Home design plans? How do I find good websites?

I'm trying to find FREE websites that will let me design a home, the floor plan and everything like that, so I can print it out and use it for the people who are going to build my family's new house. So any suggestions?

These are all free and easy to use:

Here's a good dowload:

This one you make an acount to use:

Or you might consider looking for floor plans that already exist. This is a great site where you can search for the exact number of bedrooms, bathrooms, garages, stories, and the square footage you want:

I want to remodel my home; Who do I contact for design plans, and estimates? How does the process work?

My wife and I recently bought a new home. We want some remodeling work done to it. But we don't know how to go about doing it. Its a 1900s Greek revival. We want the Outside to keep many of its Historic features. However, we want the interior to fit our sense of style. Is it Interior Designers or contractors or both? We need also need some concrete work done to the steps. How should i approach this?

If you have a very large project and want professional help, you should call an interior designer. If your project is fairly simple and you already know near exactly what you want, go straight to a contractor who can help you find a good architect to draw the plans to submit to the city for approval.

If you are not adding anything to the foundation or main structure, then your contractor may not need an architectural drawing to submit to the city. You may be able to simply sketch out your floor plan and with changes that you want for the contractor to use.

If you are not moving any walls or changing or making any major structural changes, then you shouldn't need any designers or architects.
However, you might want to get a good interior decorator.

Question for architects and home designers. What's going on with new houses design, they are making these

ridiculos home plans where you enter a house and the first thing you see is a wall, the houses are divided in squares with interior walls evrywhere making houses small and cramped, what about columns? I saw one where the small dining area had 4 columns you couldn't walk into the house w/o hitting one, what about those rear entry garage? instead of having a nice backyard now you have a garage and a alley for cars where only one car can drive at a time. So when you get home you still have to drive to the end of the block turn around on the alleyway if there is another car leaving his house one of you has to back up, once you reach home you enter you house trough the back, ceilings: you see this houses with beautiful tall roofs on the outside as you enter, the interior ceilings are flat and low. Isn't cheaper and better to leave the vaulted ceiling inside, leave walls and columns off, have a front garage?

I am neither an architect or designer, but I am a contractor who works exclusivly with both...and for better or worse (worse in my opinion)..there is a growing trend in new home design to mimic the style of homes from times past. They are designing narrow homes so more can be built on their parcel of land,so the insides become more chopped up, the rear entry garage allows them to build narrow since a garage will be in the rear not on the side, vaulted ceilings are more expensive due to all the additional drywall work involved. You may also have noticed that they are also putting in sidewalks again...there is this same trend that people want a more neighborhood community feel, with homes closer together and sidewalks connecting everything.I am as neighborly as the next guy but I'll keep my 3.5 wooded acres...I like neighbors,I just do not want to see and hear them all the time.

Home Design/Layout Visualization Software Recommendation?

My wife and I have a spot all picked out for a new home I plan to build in a few years. We think it makes sense to purchase some home design software so we can begin to put together a floor plan for upstairs and downstairs. What simple easy to operate software is available to help us design and see what our home will look like?

Google Sketchup
is an easy-to-use 3D modeling software that enables you to create 3D models of houses, buildings and many other objects, using an array of drag and drop tools and materials in a WYSIWYG editing environment. You can design your objects with rectangles, circles, ovals, arcs, lines and freehand drawings, and use a unique push/pull tool to add dimension to 2D objects. The program offers a library of building material patterns (brick, concrete, wood, glass, carpet etc.) and colors that you can use to add a realistic look to your creation.
Freeware.
