trying to find sites for new home self construction, plans and process?

looking for how to on building your own home start to finish

I know people who built their own home from start to finish. They began with a trip to the libary to check out books on carpentry, blueprint reading, etc. Some community colleges have classes in these things, too. It was a challenge, but they were fantastic places when they were finished so Good Luck to you, I'd love to see pics when you are finished!

Here are some links but I don't know how much help they will be. You'll probably need to look up each item individually to some extent. http://doityourself.com/plans/ is a great place to get started and it has bulletin boards to talk with others about your project.

Here are a couple of links.

Which part of the stimulus plan deals with the slow-down in new home construction?

Did we somehow forget about that part? Isn't that where a lot of jobs have been lost, both in construction and supporting industries?

I looked and couldn't find it. I did however find a ton of welfare and some STD prevention stuff that should go a long way to making this country...oh wait...that won't help - damn!

600 billion+ SO FAR of the “stimulus” package isWASTE
50m National Endowment for the Arts
60m Mob museum in Vegas
850mWildfire prevention in California
200m “study” electric cars for use in government
650m additional $$$ for DTV
400m NOAA to study habitat restoration
44m Repair to AG HQ in DC
276m State Department computer upgrades
600m to NASA for “global warming” research
600m “to help doctors, nurses and dentists” “prepare” for universal health care
209m maintenance upgrades to USDA research building
400m “upkeep upgrades” of “national treasures” like National Mall and
Smithsonian
…but that’s chump change compared to this:
1 bn to preserve 500 at risk salmon in CA
275bn to “refundable” tax credits (welfare checks)
30bn for “roads and bridges” (that’s about 5% of the “stimulus” being spent on
real “infrastructure”)
100bn to expand Medicaid
150bn to explore “alternative” energy
3.1bn for parks and fisheries improvements
20bn “nutritional assistance for middle income” Americans –this is an expansion
of food stamps to 400% of the poverty line!!!
1.5bn to build community health centers
1.9bn to the DOE to do …sit down…”basic research on physical sciences”!!!!
2.7bn for “rural water disposal” (this is to research how to get rural homes off
septic and on to sewer…really, it is)
2.5bn for “upgrades” and energy efficiency for government run housing
6.2bn to “weatherize” low income homes
2.4bn for “carbon capture technology”
350 m for std prevention
75m smoking cessation
870m bird flu
572m Coast Guard for job creation (translates to 460k per job created)
25m for ATV trail maintenance
1.5bn for “carbon capture contest”

New Home Construction?

We are preparing to construct a new home for our family of four. We have two small children. I have looked through the numerous books and/or design and planning sites and have a pretty good idea as to what type of home that we want (a farmhouse). My question is this: For those of you who have been involved in the construction of your own homes, what things can you not live without that you included in your new home and what things do you wish that you would have done differently or included? Thank you for you input.

Just built our house a year ago. Here is a list of things that we put in our house that I'm pleased with.
1. Slate flooring throughout kitchen and hallways
2. Real hardwood floors (no, they aren't cold)
3. Big porches to sit on in the summer (front and back)
4. A huge shop for my husband
5. Double sinks in the master bath
6. Garden tub in the master bath
7. A bonus room above the garage with a kitchenette, laundry area and bathroom.
8. 3 car garage

What I wish we would have done.
1. Wired the kitchen for cable or satellite TV
2. Added electrical outlets in the walk in closets
3.Besides canned lights in the ceilings of the front and back porches, I would add a simple outdoor light beside each outside door. Without these when we turn on the porch light we are burning 4 bulbs needlessly. To leave the house and leave on a simple porch light we can not do that since we didn't install any.

That's about it, all other stuff I'm really happy with. I'm glad I don't have carpet. I'm so happy with the slate floors. Oh! and most of our closet doors we put the type that you just pull open, which have a ball at the top. These are really convenient.
I hope all this helped.

Upgrades on New Home construction?

We are planning on building a new home in the next year, and are wondering what some of the more worthwhile construction upgrades would be (ie pipes, joists, insulation, etc.). Any ideas?

None of those will really matter.

If you are looking for resales value, sink the money into the kitchen and the master bathroom.

Rambler, two-story or split-level. All home designs are not created equal. The same square footage in home can be achieved for less by simply choosing the proper style and floor plan. A rambler style home will generally be more expensive than a two-story or split-level home. The reason for that is the larger footprint of the home. This means that you have a much more square...
