Today in English class my teacher gave us an assignment, to research New Haven and it's mythic status as an "enclave of very old moneyed wasps." However, despite my relentless google searches, I've yet to find anything remotely similar. So my questions are: Is New Haven really a hub for the mega rich,
what are the well to do neighborhoods in New Haven,
and is it true that Yale university is full of average( b and c) students, who only got in because there fathers made generous donations to the university?
New Haven isn't rich, but towns closer to New York City -- including Darien, New Canaan, Weston, Westport, and Wilton -- are.
Yale admissions are need-blind, meaning that financial statements are kept separate from admissions applications. And only 15% of Yale students are legacies (sons & daughters of alumni).

My husband and I live in a home that will only sell if we list for $40K under market value. We don't want to sell for that low but need to sell in order to buy our dream home. If a builder could buy our current home for market value we would build with them for a house that is double the price of our current home. Thier incentive would be to make a sell on a $500k house. This happens to be in a new neighborhood where the house would be built and they still haven't had their first buyer (homes for sale since Janurary 1st, 2007). They're very motivated, that is why they have chosen to offer $90k in upgrades and perks.
Buyer beware!

It seems that people move from home-to-home without discharging a mortgage. My husband and I would like to consider moving but just refinanced our home 2 1/2 years ago. We haven't built equity in the house yet, so we're at a loss as to what we should do in order to consider a new home with an old mortgage hanging over our heads.

I'm looking for a relatively cheap way to get from the Hamden/New Haven area to central mass, or failing that, northern RI. My home town is pretty much directly between Providence and Worcester, and I'd like to get as close to there as possible.
I've been on the amtrack site, and theres no combination of routes that will get me there for less than $40, is there an cheaper way? I was thinking maybe a bus, but I can't find info about any.
Greyhound Bus Lines is $27 one way from New Haven to Worcester (without any discounts like military or student); Peter Pan Bus Lines is $25 (midweek)
Both, I think, offer stops at Rt. 146 (I know Greyhound does) which may be closer to your home from your description.
I heard that if you haven't owned property in at least 5 years you are considered a new home buyer. Is this true?

Typically in mortgage lending a first time homebuyer is someone who has not owned a primary residence for the past 3 years. Some programs will allow you to have investment property as long as you can prove you have not lived there in the last 3 years. This is typically shown on your tax returns.

Lonely Old House Seeks Loving Preservationist | New Haven Independent
Five years ago, the city paid nearly $200,000 to move a circa-1880s Prospect Hill home 75 feet. Since then it has sat vacant and crumbling. Now the city is looking for a buyer who can breathe new life into it.
The house, at 477 Prospect St., is known as the Winchester Observatory Caretaker’s Cottage. The city currently has an open Request For Proposals (RFP) seeking buyers for the 4,353 square-foot structure. City officials said they’d like to see it occupied by someone who can restore with historical sensitivity. Read the RFP here .
A recent site visit with Livable City Initiative (LCI) staffers revealed that the home will require a serious investment to revive it to its former grandeur.
The house was built in 1882 as a home for the caretaker of a Yale observatory, which no longer exists. The “Yale Observatory Officer” occupied the building for six years. Yale used it for other purposes for more than a century after that, until it was donated to the New Haven Board of Education in 2002.
