Home design plans? How do I find good websites?

I'm trying to find FREE websites that will let me design a home, the floor plan and everything like that, so I can print it out and use it for the people who are going to build my family's new house. So any suggestions?

These are all free and easy to use:

Here's a good dowload:

http://www.smartdraw.com/specials/floorp lans.asp

This one you make an acount to use:

Or you might consider looking for floor plans that already exist. This is a great site where you can search for the exact number of bedrooms, bathrooms, garages, stories, and the square footage you want:

http://www.eplans.com/default.hwx?avid=S EM&referrer=google&sid=content&a mp;kw=floor_plan&gclid=CODGkMTzopUCF Qv7agodpQVEkQ

I hope I helped, and good luck building your new home! :)

Question for architects and home designers. What's going on with new houses design, they are making these

ridiculos home plans where you enter a house and the first thing you see is a wall, the houses are divided in squares with interior walls evrywhere making houses small and cramped, what about columns? I saw one where the small dining area had 4 columns you couldn't walk into the house w/o hitting one, what about those rear entry garage? instead of having a nice backyard now you have a garage and a alley for cars where only one car can drive at a time. So when you get home you still have to drive to the end of the block turn around on the alleyway if there is another car leaving his house one of you has to back up, once you reach home you enter you house trough the back, ceilings: you see this houses with beautiful tall roofs on the outside as you enter, the interior ceilings are flat and low. Isn't cheaper and better to leave the vaulted ceiling inside, leave walls and columns off, have a front garage?

I am neither an architect or designer, but I am a contractor who works exclusivly with both...and for better or worse (worse in my opinion)..there is a growing trend in new home design to mimic the style of homes from times past. They are designing narrow homes so more can be built on their parcel of land,so the insides become more chopped up, the rear entry garage allows them to build narrow since a garage will be in the rear not on the side, vaulted ceilings are more expensive due to all the additional drywall work involved. You may also have noticed that they are also putting in sidewalks again...there is this same trend that people want a more neighborhood community feel, with homes closer together and sidewalks connecting everything.I am as neighborly as the next guy but I'll keep my 3.5 wooded acres...I like neighbors,I just do not want to see and hear them all the time.

Where can I find free home design/layout help - renovation plans?

We have a unique 50 year old house that was built without a front door. We'd like to put a door in, and it'll probably have to go in the kitchen (but where?), the kitchen is too small as it currently is, so we're going to move the first floor bathroom somewhere else (but where?). We need help figuring out what our final floorplan should be, and how to do these reno's in stages while still maintaining some order in a 5 family household.

Does anybody know where I might find (free) help in coming up with a new layout? Perhaps some school of designing genius's that do this kind of thing as a learning exercise??? (I'm hoping).

We'll be doing most of the actual work ourselves (we have friends and family that are carpenters and brick layers), so it's not like we can get design help included as part of a renovation contract.

Try this site. It's the one I used.

Where can I find free used magazines...?

I am looking for anything related to architect, house designs, house plans, wood projects, home designing magazines or books. I can not afford subcriptions and I would love to take old to new magazines/books in good condition for my interest, but where can I find them? I tried posting on Craigslist, and no luck
Some of the magazines that I am interested are:
Architectural Digest
Dwell
Residential Architect
Fine Homebuilding
Custom Home
Remodeling
Interior Design
Architecture Week
Architecture
House Beautiful
This Old House
Fine Woodworking

I am also looking for any books including house plans, style of homes, modern buildings, styles of architecture and more. I also perfers bigger lots of magazines/books to make it worth the trip.

Try the local library. I know ours gives theirs away after awhile

Question Regarding New house design modification?

Photo of Room in Question: http://imgur.com/b9OEA.jpg
Room plan: http://imgur.com/QzhmF.jpg

My new home has a room with dimensions (12'x19.8') and I plan to use it as an entertainment centre of the house. My 52" LCD television unfortunately is too large to fit above the fireplace in it's current location, so we were planning on moving the fireplace to the opposite wall (as indicated by the photo). A frame will be constructed around the fireplace to house the television.

I was wondering, would this adjustment look good, or would it completely alter the room's orientation for the worse? Another thing to note is that, the house is "open concept" which means that there is an overlook from the second floor towards the room. My main concern is that, the location of the fireplace is designed so that it would feel it belongs in that area. The large windows envelop the fireplace.

Don't be too concerned about where the builder positioned the fireplace, their selection was more than likely based on cost rather than design orientation. Your new tv location will allow you to watch it from the breakfast bar as well as the kitchen table. This location will also allow you to position your furniture in such a way that more seating can be arranged to enjoy the fireplace and provide optimal viewing from most seats.
