So now it transpires that we, the British taxpayers, will be footing the bill for the killer of headteacher Phillip Lawrence?
According to media reports, Learco Chindamo, the culprit, will be getting a new home, new identity, and intensive security protection costing up to ONE MILLION a year. And we'll be paying for it!
Do you agree that British justice is a thing of the past? And that Chindamo should have been deported back to Italy? How is it that the judges in other countries manage to interpret the same Human Rights legislation in a more rational way than the lunatics in our British courts?
I feel so, so sorry for the family of Phillip Lawrence.
NDGBILL - if you'd bothered to read my post properly, you'd note I NEVER mentioned 'revenge'. You brought that up - not me. I merely suggested that something is bloody unfair about the fact that currently in the UK, the guilty have more rights than the victims. Why on earth have you responded so aggressively???!
Chindamo is a product of our society, he has lived here since the age of 5 and has little or no connections with Italy. He is our problem and we have to deal with it. The protection issue is a separate matter which I don't agree with and which the State has no obligation to undertake. Removing the Act would allow politicians to impose ever more intrusive and onerous legislation on us without limit. Before the HRA we could only invoke our rights if we had sufficient cash to bring a case in Strasbourg, now it can be raised before any UK court. British justice would be alot poorer without the Act.
For other countries, this legislation has been in place for many years and doesn't raise the sort of hysterical reaction we have here. It's also seen as fundamental to the relationship between the individual and the State.

Just bought a new home, the only one on a newly constructed side street off of a main road. I tried to do an address change online, but the new address isn't being recognized by US Postal Service system. The builder listed the house under this new address, so why doesn'tt the postal service recognize it and is there anything I can do to make this address exist for the postal service? The mail carrier that comes by here doesn't know what I need to do.
I would say that your new address is not yet in the address system for the Post Office, especially since you say that it is a new street and the first house on it. Talk to your local PO and ask them to add your street and number range. It shouldn't take too many days for address management to get it added to the carriers scheme and then the system will recognize the new address.
I purchased a new home in 2007. Can I claim the taxes I paid on my home at the time of purchase on my income tax forms (federal and state)? I live in Michigan.
Property Tax will go on Schedule A. Plus, with the purchase of a home, there are several other things you will be able to deduct. However, this will involve some detail. File the extension right now, and consult a CPA.

Charlotte-area home prices hit new low - CharlotteObserver.com
Charlotte-area home prices fell in November to their lowest levels since the recession began, part of a pattern that's prompted worries of a double dip in the housing market.
Prices in the metro area declined 0.4 percent from October, the closely watched S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index released Tuesday shows. Home prices dropped in 19 of the 20 market areas the index tracks, rising slightly in just one, San Diego.
Only four metro areas showed year-over-year gains, while nine markets - including Charlotte - hit their lowest levels since home prices peaked in 2006 and 2007. That means average home prices in those markets have fallen below the lows set in spring 2009.
"With these numbers, more analysts will be calling for a double-dip in home prices," said David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at Standard & Poor's. "... Certainly nine cities setting new lows, and with the only positive news concentrated in southern California and Washington, D.C., the data point to weakness in home prices."
