“At Home” – Bookmarks - Wilmington Star News - Wilmington, NC ...
My Christmas present last year was a copy of “At Home: A Short History of Private Life” by Bill Bryson (Doubleday, $28.95). Frankly, I haven’t had this much fun since the year since my Robot Commando and my Junior Missile Command launch pad were both waiting underneath the tree.
If you don’t know Bryson, you really should. Born in 1951, he grew up in Des Moines, Iowa (a background celebrated royally in his wonderful, funny memoir “The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid”), but he married an Englishwoman, settled in Britain in the 1970s and except for a stretch in New Hampshire in the 1990s — about the time he wrote ”A Walk in the Woods,” his account of hiking (sort of) the Appalachian Trail — he’s lived there ever since. Since 2007, he’s been president of The Campaign to Protect Rural England.
(Here’s a link to his British website: http://www.booksattransworld.co.uk/billbryson/ .)
Bryson writes a lot, and he writes well. He’s written about Shakespeare, he’s written about English (“The Modern Tongue”) and its offshoot, American (“Made in America”). He’s written travelogues about England (“Notes from a Small Island”), small-town America (“The Lost Continent”), Australia (“In a Sunburned Country”), Africa and Europe.
