I was going to buy a nice piece of used furniture off of Kijiji in Toronto on Ca but I am hearing that I should be careful because I could end up getting cockroaches here in my own home in Barrie On Canada if they live in the furniture that I purchase in Toronto? Any help appreciated.
I think that is hilarious! Toronto does not have a cockroach infestation! I've lived here my whole life and have never had cockroaches!! AND I was an Antique dealer for years and never once have I come across a cockroach in anything I have sold.
That being said... anytime you buy something that is used-from ANYWHERE- just give it a good look over... better safe than sorry. ;-)
I wouldn't shy from buying that piece of furniture! That's crazy.

It is not clear if I would be considered a visitor or a seasonal resident when it comes to paying or not paying duty when I arrive in Canada. Does anyone know? I still have my home in the US where I permanently reside but plan to go back/forth to Canada (with apartment as second home).
As a visitor I think I have to export everything upon leaving Canada. I don't know if I am allowed to donate, say a sofa, to someone or to an organization. But if I am considered a seasonal resident, I could sell or get rid of some items after 1 year.
Make sure that you have proof of ties with the US and proof of funds to cover your stay, including medical insurance. If you have rented a place, you are a seasonal resident.
