right now the furniture is a couch, recliner, ottoman(large to be used as coffetable) two end tables and ofcourse the tv. I plan on purchasing a loveseat and also purchase a table that fits against the wall to put near the front door with the couch spaced far enough to "create" a entry way as the home does not have a proper one. Its a rectanglular room. hope that helps..

Always use the fireplace as a focal point so maybe arrange the furniture in an L shape facing the fireplace, best if you have a sofa and loveseat. you should probably list the furniture that youre trying to arrange so we have an idea.

I have some clutter in my garage and attic. I think I may have termites but not positive. When the exterminators examine the house, what do they need to see --how much furniture or stored things needs to be moved away from walls, corners, etc.?
To "d" : How do they determine if you have termites or carpenter ants, etc. without examining most corners of the house? How do they determine that you need treatment?

not at all,,, i had mine looked at today. they come out look around ask questions then if needed the apt gets set. i have carpenter ants.. but i asked about termites and this is standard routine.. good luck..i hate bugzzzz

I had a new leather sofa delivered to my home by a major retailer. The delivery people unwrapped the sofa on the sidewalk outside and then carried it through my front door and up my stairs. Unfortunately, they made about a one-inch-long rub mark in the leather on the front corner of the sofa. They are having a professional come out to repair it, but should I accept this? Should I demand to have a brand new couch delivered to replace it?

It depends on the damage and how they are going to repair it. If they are making it like new, it should be OK. However, if they're just patching it up to make it look decent, otherwise covering it up, then you most definitely should demand a replacement.

We have a sectional sofa and we would like to put the radiator behind the corner wedge. Would this be alright to still heat the room and be safe?

This is a great question. I used to work in a complex and the tenants would always complain of no heat. Without exception the would have the heating units blocked by couches, etc. There is no fire hazard, but with fin tube heat, it is imperative the cover is installed and the bottom and top are free to promote convection. ( air flow). With cast iron heat if you put something in front of it the item will be nice and warm, bit you wont. It is best to leave the rads un blocked or you will suffer heat loss.

I just bought a corner victorian home in DC that has a 4 story turret. It is beautiful but I am having a hard time laying out my present furniture in the area where the turrets are. I have square rugs and I am not sure I will be able to make it work. Any suggestions? By the way the turreted areas are pretty large

The problem with using your existing furniture for turret decorating is that the furniture was purchased with a different room set up in mind. But, fear not, you can still use what you have as long as you pay close attention to placement and scale.

Don't make the mistake of loading the room with a bunch of small furnishings because the walls are not large. It will look like a doll house. Instead, do the opposite. Use less furniture of substantial size.

I am never advise to use the same window treatment shape on every window in the house. Except for turrets. They look magnificent from outside if you are consistent with the window treatments because it is such an architectural attraction and will gain a lot of attention. Consider something simple like sheer curtains so you can take advantage of all of that light. Or period window treatments like swags and jabots. If privacy is needed, use blinds that tuck up and away until needed.

I love to see a round table and a set of charis in the center of a turret room. To me the room just screams for a table, dead center. If you can use a table in one of the four floors, I would certainly do so. And, hang a victorian chandelier to top it all off would be decadent. If you want a rug in this room, I would positively look for a round rug.

A bed looks so romantic just away from the windows, pushed forward into the room with night stands by it's side; this way you can walk behind the bed. If you can get night stands that have legs, not drawers to the floor, then it will look breezy and allow light refraction, giving that open airy feeling.

If the turret is large enough, I would use two love seats facing each other in the center of the room with a round coffee table. But if you must use your current couch, still do so and have it float in front of a coffee table which is centered in the room. Normally you cannot pass through a turret room, so it is okay to restrict freedom of movement as long as you can get into the center of the space. So, if the couch blocks the side from passing through the arm closest to the window, it's all right. If there is room enough, this would be a perfect set up for a sofa table behind the couch.

The square rug will look unusual in a round empty room, however, once you put the furnishings in, I am sure it will look just fine.

You may have to play around with various pieces of furniture until you get a pleasing arrangement. If the turrets are large enough you can have a desk area on one side and a seating area on another. If you can do built ins and the windows are high enough off the floor, consider window seats. If there is enough wall space, you could do tall book shelves with a window seat between the shelves and under the window.

Although this seems challenging, it really is just another way to use your imagination. Go on-line and visit victorian homes to get some ideas. I am sorry this is so long but we are talking about four rooms here. Remember, only buy things you love, not because it is a bargain price because that defeats your end result. Enjoy your new home. A Victorian home on a corner in DC. That is THE life.
