I need to take some photographs of a nice waterfront home in Brisbane and want some tips to make the photos look like they belong in a home magazine. It's for a uni assignment. I have a reasonable Canon SLR and tripod but only an on-camera flash.
The location of the house is tricky because the sun always seems to be shining in the windows so brightly that it's difficult to take photos from inside the house, looking out.
Also, I'd like some photos at dusk or night with lights on. How do I make sure that you can still see the details of the house?
They have nice furniture but should I bring any props?
Any suggestions are very welcome. Thanks!
One way to solve your problem is to take the shots at dawn or dusk. This will allow you to match the interior and exterior light. Also consider double exposures to get more detail in the photo. For example, shoot the house underexposed just before dusk and make the second exposure (with interior lighting in windows) after dark. That's a simplified explanation, but the general idea.
Another way is to take individual shots with separate exposures for highlights, mid-tones and shadows and combine them into one digital HDR image. This is much easier than doing it in-camera.
