Have you ever tried wrestling your home furniture?

Like wrestling the removable setting of your couch,
giving your dinner chair a last ride through your dinner table,
or choke slamming your pillow
giving your desk chair a pedigree.
using home diy tools to defeat myself,
oh the fun that can be had wrestling yourself.

I learned the Great Muta's leglock using a pillow lol.

What's the best furniture design software for home use?

I like to design my own furniture at home but I don't want to go through the trouble of learning AutoCad or a full CAD application. I want to 'draw' my own chairs, desks, cabinets, in 3D. What software would you recommend I use?

How do the manufacturers of that assemble-at-home furniture (mainly desks, I guess) make the pits that the __|?

cam connectors sit in where they get spun around the cam bolts, without drilling the kind of small holes all the way through that I'd end up drilling with one of my spade bits because of the tip in the middle?

The kind of pit the manufacturers drill or cut has a flat bottom and doesn't have any spot that pokes all the way through or even indents beyond that. I need to recreate those pits because part of the board wall around the perpendicular pits--where the cam SCREWS sit--got torn out. As deep as the wider cam pits have to be to accept the cam connectors, the spade bit would be guaranteed to poke its little tip all the way through the board. Yes, I could do this with one those, but I'd prefer to avoid the poke-through hole if I can. How would I do that? What kind of bit does that? Or is it a whole different kind of tool?

Even an extra-big traditional twist bit would leave a cone-shaped dip in the bottom of the hole. This wouldn't be noticeable visually (from the other end of the board or from the cam end once the cam is inserted), but it might make the pit less stable mechanically, because I think the cam prefers a flat surface to rest against. Agreed?

Wouldn't even a Forstner bit drill a little tip hole all the way through in the center? Even that kind of bit has a little screw tip in the middle that I think might poke all the way through.

Even a hole saw doesn't work its magic without having to cut all the way through, because there's no way to cut across the bottom of a pit with one of those. Even those do have twist bits in the middle, anyway.

So... what in the world do these guys use?

Will you come back and see my responses to your answers, please?

Thanks,
Mike Christensen
Oh, do they use a router? Is there a kind of router bit that can make a cylindrical pit with a sharp (right-angle) edge whos bottom is flat all the way across without any through-holes?
Hey, Slamm, thanks for your answer. Well, upon closer inspection of my cam pits, I think I DO see a little center dent that might've been poked by the starter tip of a Forstner bit. And by the way, I guess not all Forstner starter tips are screws. I just looked up some pictures of them to refresh my memory and some some just have a little tiny tip without any room for screw threads. So yeah, I guess I could try a Forstner bit. I bet it would actually work.

My dad was suggesting a milling head and asking the store how those milling heads start their holes. But yeah, now I do bet a Forstner bit is what would work here.
Oh, yeah, after going to the store and the Wikipedia and looking at different kinds of drill bits, I've found that when I was thinking of the kind of bit with the screw-tip starter center, I was wrong for calling those Forstner bits. I guess those are called center bits, and while apparently similar to Forstners according to my untrained eye, are certainly different. So I found an actual Forstner bit at the store and bought it. Yes, its starter tip is only a little bud, and that won't be a problem for me, especially since that apparently must be what they use in this furniture.

Thanks for your reassuring answer, though. :)

Forstner bit was my answer. I would have to go out to my truck and look but i would swear i have drilled the type of hole you are talking about with one.

How do you arrange home office furniture?

I have a square room with large windows on the south wall, a smaller window on the east wall, a closet on the north wall, and an empty east wall. I have a large bookcase, a small cabinet, and two desks I am trying to arrange to be practical but not overwhelm and crowd the room, especially since it's all dark wood furniture. I've tried angling some of the pieces, separating the desks, putting the desks together to increase my workspace . . . I'm just confusing myself? Any suggestions? And please don't suggest those furniture arranging programs, I'd really just like to hear people's actual visions for arranging the furniture. Thank you!

How about putting one desk under the south window...then use the 2nd desk to form an L shape...(unless a 2nd person will be using this desk). If 2 people will be using the desks, put them under the south windows facing each other.

Then put the large bookcase on the east wall... under the window or beside it...with the small cabinet on the north wall (by the closet door).

With this arrangement, you can see out both windows and the door.

Have you thought about painting the desks a lighter color so the room won't be full of dark wood?
