HELP! I need design advice for my home office

Okay, so i have a really boring cluttered home office and i really need help. It has white walls (blech) and a lot of black and dark cherry wood furniture. I really would like to keep with the cherry wood.

Unfortunately i have a bland, uncomfortable futon (blue "mattress" with black "supports") that i can't get rid of. I also cannot get rid of the large map of town and the large high school class pictures displayed on the wall. (though i would appreciate some help on how to display them, right now its pretty much one, then below, another...)

Anyone have any ideas for wall color ( i REALLY need help with that) and what i can do about the futon and what i should do about the wall displays and etc?

Right now my home office is very cold, bland and unattractive-looking. I really want to soften it up while keeping the pieces i already have (2 end tables, 2 desks, a book shelf, all in dark cherry wood. Also the futon, though it seriously needs help).

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

you said it feels "cold", it may be because of the lighting. Are you using fluorescent lights? If so, you can try getting a more yellowish looking fluorescent lights to cut down some coldness of it.

OK, so how about paint the wall to creamy eggshell yellow like this one here: http://www.homeportfolio.com/catalog/Pro duct.jhtml?superCatId=11&catId=94&am p;avId=10886&prodId=32301
or even lighter, for the molding on the wall, paint it white. You can keep all your cherry wood furniture but get rid of the futon or move it to the guest room or garage. Then get a simple but romantic looking pendant for general lighting. Decorate the room with some fresh flowers. A leather sofa will be good too. For the map...frame it with the color similar to your wood furniture. Hang it on one side of the book shelf, and the class pic on the other side. This should give you a simple English country house look. Hope this helps!

Am I being selfish in wanting to acheive my dreams?

My husband and I have been married 20 years, we have 7 children ranging from 16 months to a 20 year old college student. My husband and I have GED's. With a few exceptions I have always stayed home with our children and been a homemaker letting my husband reach his professional goals and acquire a Bachelors degree in Engeneering and a Masters in business management. He makes a great income for our area, travels overseas and makes several 2-5 day trips every 3 months. He has been in total control of our finances for the last 5 years even having his "own" bank account and post office box. My dreams have always been to open a childrens clothing store that sells new and gently used high end clothing and furniture such as cribs, high chairs. I have been selling it on E-Bay for 7 years for spending money. In Oct of '08 I decided to start my dreams and built up a business plan with the help of a Small Business Counselor, did market research, found a great location and negotiated the rent to fit my budget. I took my husband to the bank with me to apply for the loan. 3 days later the bank called and said that they could not approve me because my credit score was 530 and our debt to income ration was too high. I started taking a closer look at our finances by pulling credit reports and found "we" had over $100,000 in debt not including our mortgage. My husbands credit report is 19 pages long. He was sympathetic that I was turned down and gave up all control to the finances placing it all in my care. We took a loan off his 401K since we figured it would tank by the end of this year anyway and paid off as much high interest debt as we could. Now that I feel things are in better control, I have acquired my own credit card and we are due for a nice size refund that I would like to put up as capital for my business but he now insists that I am being selfish, should wait 5 years for our youngest to go to school and then be a real estate agent??? I feel that after 20 years of putting everyone else first and him always putting himself first, even taking out Stafford loans for his education although he lead me to believe his company was covering his tuition, that it is now my turn to work towards my dream at the age of 39. Am I being selfish???

NO! You are not being selfish! If anyone is, it's him. I know its hard to hear about someone you love. . . but it seems to be the case here. True it may not be the bet time to start a business, but there seems to more than just that behind his thinking. My opinion is that he doesn't like the idea of the woman being independent. And if i am wrong I do apologize, but he seems to be a bit of a chauvinist. (I would also ? the P.O. box and own account)

"I feel that after 20 years of putting everyone else first and him always putting himself first, even taking out Stafford loans for his education although he lead me to believe his company was covering his tuition, that it is now my turn to work towards my dream at the age of 39."
Here Here!!! Now tell him that. Be that strong independent woman you seem to have always wanted to be. Remember this is YOUR life, not his. And there is still a lot of life ahead of you to live.

On a side note, and I am sorry if I am being to bold. . . you need to sit down and think about your marriage. It's suppose to be a partnership. Not a ownership. Is this really what is best for you, or your children?
If this gives you any encouragement I have two quick stories for you.
1) Nita, a family friend- has/had a husband much like yours. She was at her ropes end and had decided to go back to school, learn a skill(she chose nursing) and once she was able to find a job and support her and childern- she left him. (he paid for the schooling!)

2) My grandparents are 87 and 90 years old. My grandpa does everything thing for my grandma, even thinks for her. He answers any question directed at her and talks for her. I've heard her disagree once in 8 years. Please don't end up like that!

Anybody with experience of renting a home?

I'm currently in this process and it's the first time I've ever rented formally through an agency, so it's all new to me. I'm not sure if they're being really rubbish about this or if it's just standard procedure.

In a nutshell, the lettings market here is moving very fast. We viewed it last week (myself and the friend I'll be living with), fell in love with it instantly and paid the agency fees the next day to secure it for us until we have the checks done on us and can pay a deposit if we're accepted. When we viewed it, he said that we would need to move in (or at least start paying rent) in a maximum of three weeks, and that was a week ago, leaving two weeks left.

The agency shuts over the weekend so we didn't hear much after that. Then they got in touch with me (I'm the one sorting most of the practical stuff out) on Monday to ask a few simple questions, said they'd contact the landlord and get back in touch.

The next day we both received an online tenancy application form to fill out. My friend submitted hers without a problem, but there was an error on my form and it wasn't letting me submit. I contacted the agency about this and they said they'd get back to me about it, and they never did. I asked a couple more times and they fobbed me off in a similar manner. We also, on that same day, received the draft tenancy agreement and were told that if we had any issues with it to contact them immediately. I had a simple clause that I needed to be added to it (not changing anything about it but something for clarity for another purpose... long story) and rang them up. Again, I was fobbed off.

I continued to try and submit this online form anyhow, until yesterday I clicked on it and it said it had submitted itself somehow. I realised, though, that it had been submitted with a vital piece of information missing - at the end of the form it stated I have no means of income which is fully inaccurate.

The office was shut by then so first thing in the morning I rang them up and told them about this. Once again, she said she was too busy to deal with me right then and that she'd ring me back later. She never rang back. I emailed the woman I'm dealing with directly (who happens to be the manager) towards the end of the day reminding her, and I never heard from her.

It's now the weekend so it'll be Monday before I can contact them again, and for all I know this form is with the landlord (who we haven't been allowed to contact) and he's there thinking I have no income so is obviously going to reject me.

I wouldn't be being so anal about this if it wasn't for the fact that 1. We've paid over £250 agency fees which is a LOT of money for us and we can't afford to lose, and kind of feel that if we've paid them they should be giving us something in return... and 2. The house is fully unfurnished and if we get it we're going to have to acquire a house full of furniture in less than 2 weeks.

Is this normal or are they being bad about this? It's frustrating because as I said we're dealing with the manager so there is nobody higher up to complain to, and anyhow we don't want to ruffle feathers of the people we're relying on to help us get the house.

I would do a check on the managing agency at the Better Business Bureau website to see if they have any complaints. Also check for reviews/ complaints via Google. If they are that unresponsive before they've hooked you into a contract, I can only imagine how they ignore their poor tenants.

If the land lord hired an agency to do the managing, I doubt that he is even the one deciding whether you are approved or not. So, if you explain the mistake to the agency, it should be ok... that is if you really want to rent from them.

I am currently renting through an agency and it's going OK. Like anything - there are good apples and there are bad ones.

Good luck in your decision.

Corruption: Can you bottom this?

Banner day today for news stories that are a sign of the times.

#1. Race is on for the Texas governor election. Republican in trouble because he refuses to answer questions about rising unemployment during his term. Asked about it on live radio, he said, "It's true, we've lost 270,000 jobs but the rate has slowed." But the commentator slams him by pointing out that there were actually 350,000 jobs lost on the private sector, while 80,000 NEW ones were created -- guess where? IN TEXAS GOVERNMENT!!! Not exactly what you'd call your basic anti-big-government scenario.

Eerie was the sidelight about the 'Tea Party Independent' candidate who, according to the commentary, lost her points and position when she appeared on the Glenn Beck radio show and was asked about US Government complicity in the events of 9/11. She said, "There's a lot of evidence, but I think it is premature to say it is sure." Guess what. Her viewpoint was TOO MODERATE! Heresy!
OFF WITH HER HEAD!

Now, you'd think that double-barreled fiasco would for sure be the top hypocrite story of the day. But that would be ignoring Florida -- ALWAYS a mistake when duplicity is the subject.

#2: It turns out that there's a Florida legal-eagle guy named Freeman who, after being named business "Man of the Year" in 2005 became, with recent events, the Golden Boy of choice to clean up finance; being appointed as Receiver by the courts when all the bankruptcies, foreclosures and defaults began to pile sky-high. He's the one who steps in to stop the bleeding, taking possession of what is left and liquidates it so that the poor folks who have been scammed and lost their homes or life savings or whatever it is get at least something back after the crooks like Bernie Madoff are caught, or corporations go under leaving nothing but office furniture and shredded paper behind.

Well hang onto your hat. Sir Galahad Freeman was indicted today in Miami for like a bazillion counts of larceny, fraud, and grand theft. Turns out he was skimming all along , and took millions of dollars for himself. Actually stealing from the people who had already been stolen from! You have to admire the chutzpah, I guess. Call it "Equity Recycling".

#3: Meanwhile, I heard yet another one of those chummy TV advertisements in the new vein from some investment company or other -- all about "We know how it is. We look after you like family in these tough times", and so on. But when the name-hook came at the end, I almost fell out of my chair. No, you'll never guess. AIG.

It's the old riddle:

Q: Why do people who live next to Niagara Falls have ears that stick out and a flat forehead?

A: Because every morning they wake up and say, "What's that noise?" *hands push ears out*, and then "Oh! The FALLS!" *slaps forehead*.

You're too much for me, man; wouldn't even attempt to post a meaningful response - would take way too much time and energy.

Just wanted to let you know that I greatly admire your writing skills: most impressive. Just wondering if you're a professional Journalist?

Take care,

Alberich
