I am inheriting a dinining room table that seats 8 and was wondering if they make anything that I can place on top of the table to protect it. I have two cats that have slipped when jumping onto furniture and their little claws come out and damage the furniture. This dining room table was appraised at around $2,000, I'd like to keep it in the same condition that I received it in for many years to come.

If you go to a fine furniture store in your area (like robb & stuckey), they will come to your house make a template, and order it for you.
Look for a company in your area that sells Henredon furniture (go to their site, and find a dealer). That will be the fine furniture store that you can go to. Call 1st and tell them what you need, they may ask you to make the template, but more than likely they will do it.

At Woodley's & Kacey Fine Furniture in the Denver metro area I have seen knicked/worn floor models of home office furniture made by Aspen Furniture. I am curious whether this is indicitive of the quality of the pieces and/or the manufacturer, or is it because the floor models have gotten moved around/abused at the store. The pieces are made out of hardwood & veneers. I REALLY like the collection & feel it is what I need & in my price range. However, I don't want to spend money on something that won't last but a couple years. Please advise!
dont care
furniture do you have in your home that is made out of what fine (not pine, although it does rhyme) South African woods ? We have a jonkmanskas and a sideboard of stinkwood and yellowwood, and a few small kassies and riempie chairs of imbuia.
I know that imbuia is not sooo typically South African in that it is found in Brazil, but the furniture is very traditional to South Africa, especially the riempie work.
*Edit* George G, most of my furniture was bought second hand by my parents when they married in the 1940´s. That could make the furniture anything up to 100 years old.
You have a great treasure.
I've often wondered why we don't see more mopani wood furniture - it's very durable and rather plentiful in certain areas. Probably too hard to cut, like Rhodesian teak.
My mom has a small table made from different kinds of protea woods by an extraordinarily talented man and friend of the family.
as well as custom head boards for beds with hand forged vines and leafs with small snakes and insects hand forged art turned into home furniture what do you think? could a person building these type of items really sell them and if so where. --thanks.
Well we use iron fabrications all of the time in our design business. We've used everything from bar stools, to table bases, to pot racks, to railings, to hardware, to mirror frames, to etageries, to coat racks, to trunk and furniture bases, to plant stands, to garden art, to trellises, to tapestry and drapery rods. Yes, there is a huge market for it.
Profitability is your main concern. In the western US, most of our iron work comes out of Mexico where we can have it made inexpensively and still make our mark-up. They can make anything that literally you can draw. The problem is that it isn't always perfect and sometimes you have to have joints re-welded, leaves added, elements repaired.
But, when I go to the design districts in southern and midwestern states, it is just as popular, but they aren't paying the transporation price from mexico because wrought and cast iron is heavy. And, because of the imperfections they prefer local artisans. So that would be your best market for furniture. I'd try to get a booth at one of the shows, there is rarely dealers showing custom iron works.
Out in CA, the biggest market for custom iron works locally is gates, decorative fences and inserts, yard art, railings, etc. made to measure and designer specified. Big bucks in that work because it cannot come out of Mexico. Check out Metal Amore, they do a lot of business in San Diego, have a website and do some awesome custom work.
But, if you can do some of that kind of work, there is a market with interior designers and custom home builders. Even condo converters are using in their retros out here.
Good luck.

Fine Furniture for your Children’s Bedroom
I have seen a lot more children’s furniture than most people, and I must say most of it is geared for average use and is not that attractive. If you are looking for real quality to deck out your children’s bedroom in their formative years then you have to see the AFK collection of “fine furniture for children”. Cribs , day beds, twin beds, and canopies are all part of their collection with armoires, night stands, and accent chairs to round out your favorite person’s bedroom. AFK has a selection of “themes” to choose from and a wide variety of finishes to help create that perfect look. The line ranges from items like changing tables for the new born, to desks for the young student with all sorts of accessories and lamps.
