I am #94210. I have no name. People cower from me in the streets, people jeer at me like an animal at parties. I am a switcher, and the governess’ pet. The sequined mask plastered to my face hides my eyes from the world. Someday I will escape this humiliation.
Javert
“Javert! Go get some bread from the market”
“Yes, mum” I replied stumbling out the door. I smiled as the warm spring breeze caressed my face. My bare feet shuffled across the dirt path towards the market. Tomorrow will be my sixteenth birthday, my official Quartom. The Quartom was the ceremony that would make me a man. Every since the summer plaque of ’64, all boys have been sent away from their homes at the age of sixteen to work. The gods must have given me a blessing, for I have found a job as the Governess’ servant. I will not be sent to work in the factories ‘til my death.
As I turned the corner into the market, our last shiz in hand to buy this weeks food, I froze. The market was silent which could only mean one thing; a switcher. I gazed around the corner. There stood a switcher. Her eyes were covered with the blood red mask. I’d heard only rumors of these switchers; I’ve never actually seen one. It’s said that their changing eye color gives them unheard powers. But she did not look like the blood-thirst monsters I’d been told of. In fact, with her short black hair, pale skin, and ruby red lips, she looked quite beautiful. I smiled at her, but I don’t think she saw.

Twice a week we are allowed to leave the base to visit the outside world. Arriving the in the market, the square goes silent. Mothers grab their children and shield their eyes from me. I am nothing but a monster to them. Ignoring the angry glares from the men and the scared looks from the children I rushed through the street, my feet barely touching the ground. I normally never paid any attention to these commoners but one boy stood out. He stood beside the corner of the market, but he did not look down from my gaze. He looked at me not with fear or anger but with curiosity. I gazed at him in shock as he smiled at me. No one had ever smiled at me. He wore nothing but rags, and his hair was long and knotted, but he looked endearing anyways. I shoved these thoughts out of my head, there was no use wishing about things like that .Suddenly feeling self conscious I hurried by.
Though I was enjoying the fresh air I ran back to the base. The base was windowless and fully armed; it was more like a prison than a home. The guards unlatched the many locks into the base to allow me in. Even though they were fully armed the still wouldn’t look me in the eyes. Normally when a child is born they are inspected to make sure their eyes don’t change color. But since I was born out in the country, no one discovered that I was a switcher until my 10th year. I remember that day so clearly. I sat on my mothers lap, listening to her soothing voice singing my favorite lullaby. I wanted another cookie, but she said I had to wait. I got so upset, my eyes changed to a vile green, and the next thing I knew my mother was dead. I am a killer as my father reminded me as he called the police. They snapped the gaudy mask upon my freckled face, and threw me into the police cab. That was the last day I ever saw any color. The mask takes away my ability to see and my powers. I try to remember these colors, but they have become blurry in my memory, everything is black and white in my world.
Unlike the outside of the base, the inside was filled with rare antiquities and lavish furniture. I sat down on the emerald love seat, my head pounding. I could feel it my eyes were changing color. I gasped for breathe as the masquerade mask seamed to enclose around my head. I tasted the blood where I was biting down on my lip. Finally it was over. No matter the excruciating pain I would never cry out, for that would only give the governess satisfaction.
“We’ll your back early,” #864 sang as she plopped down next to me. I had only one friend in this world and that is #864, she was the oldest of the four other switchers. We were as different as two people could be. She was a good foot taller than me, and didn’t mind being a switcher, while I detested it.
“Did you just have a change?” She asked kindly laying her blond head upon my rigid shoulder.
Still regaining my breathe I nodded. #864 began to hum, her light and airy voice echoed through our bedroom. She was the only one who knew how to calm me down. I gazed around the room. Our five four poster beds lined against the brick wall, all uniform, and a glass chandler dangled from the ceiling, and a grand piano lay dusty and unused in the corner. I knew I should have been grateful for what we all had. There were so many living in the Tubs. The Governess didn’t want commoners on the streets where she lived so she moved them all to one location, the Tubs. The Tubs used to just be once city but now it has expanded to all three of those neig
Well, I'm in eighth grade, and frankly, I love it. I noticed a few things though. How does she know that the couch is green and the girl's hair is blond if she can't see color? Also, you have a couple of sentence fragments. Check for spelling too. Other than technical errors, this is a highly original story and I want to know why the governess is keeping all the Switchers. You may be doing this intentionally, but are you going to add more detail about her past life? I hope so. Also, you may want to talk about how she became a Switcher. Overall, I thought this was a great piece of writing. Keep up the good work!
Hope I helped!

You would never know the truth behind our family just by looking at all of us from the outside. Our house and family looks like it came right out of a storybook, everything is perfect. Our house is right outside of town, so it’s quiet but not too quiet. It is a huge house with five bedrooms, three baths, a gym, and a redone basement, and an outside pool. Each room is done according to a select color theme. Every room looks the same yet different, according to the purpose of the room. Our kitchen is done in dark blue with silver appliances; we have blue granite counters with kitchen appliance you would find in a restaurant. Our dining room is Cherry Blossom Pink with Cherry wood tables, chairs, and Grandfather clock. The master bedroom is Emerald Green with silver accents. The master bathroom is the perfect getaway, with a Jacuzzi tub and a skylight. The two spare bedrooms are Baby Blue and Mellow Yellow, each with a full bed that would make you want to stay forever. My sister, Lesley’s bedroom is Lime Green, Dandelion, and Mandarin Orange with white furniture and an amazing sound system. My bedroom though is my favorite; it’s black and white with a tiny bit of Scarlett Red. All the furniture is metal and glass, making the whole room look chic and modern. Our basement though is where we spend most of our time in the winter because we have pool table, ping-pong, and a seventy-two inch television. In the summer we are mainly by the pool or in the hot tub.
In school, my life was simple, everybody “liked” me. After all, my family had all the money in this town because of our family’s glass factory, therefore making me and my younger sister popular. Some people, who did not know me, may have called me spoiled, but the truth is I was very far from it. Even though I knew I could get anything I wanted, I didn’t. Most of the time I wouldn’t even ask for it. Even though I was popular, I only had a few friends. Jessie was my best friend, who knew everything, even the horrific pieces of my life. For me books were my escape. I had so many books that I had my own personal library in the basement. Books are what took my mind off of everything in my life.
The problem was not my house or what I have. It was in my family, or lack thereof. What the town didn’t see is that my dad was an alcoholic, my mom was depressed, and my thirteen year old sister was my responsibility. In my house I was the seventeen year old adult who had to cook dinner, wash everybody’s laundry, and do the grocery shopping. I couldn’t do any activities after school because I needed to come home to let the dogs out and make sure my mother was still alive. My life was a living chaos and the worst part was that it had been this way since I was thirteen. Some days I could deal, and actually enjoy being in charge. Other days I hated it; I felt horrible. I was tired, I had too much homework, and I just didn’t have the time to run the house.
I have had my mom to doctors and they all said the same thing, “Give her this medicine and watch her, she will be herself in a few weeks.” The problem was that I no longer knew what “herself” was any more. I kept trying to convince my father to go to rehab. The other problem was that I was not getting anywhere, and he just kept saying “I’m fine,” but I knew that he was not. I did not know what to do. My life was spiraling out of control and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

Everything changed on July 28, 2009, for the better and the worse. I was at home getting ready to mix up dinner and put it in the oven when the phone rang. It was the worst phone call that I have ever received, and probably the worst I will ever get in my lifetime. It was the hospital calling looking for Devynn. To this day I still do not know why they called looking for me and not my mother, but I will never know. Lesley and my father were in a car accident. My dad was driving too fast and he lost control. The car spun in two circles, hit the grass, rolled over, and stopped when it hit a tree. Both of them were bruised and battered but there were no serious problems. This car accident is what changed my family. My father was okay; he got out with a sprained wrist and a few scrapes. Lesley, though, wasn’t quite as lucky. She broke her ankle and also had a sprained wrist, but she was okay.
They were on their way home from Lesley’s soccer practice. Dad picked her up on his way home from the office. That day he was drinking, enough that once the hospital found that he was okay he was arrested for driving over the legal alcohol limit. He paid the fine, got community service for three months, and had to join Alcoholic Anonymous. This is the good part of the story, since Dad was now in AA. He was still an alcoholic but he was no longer an active alcoholic. To this day he has not had a drink in over a year and a half. Now that my father was actually coherent at home, that meant that I only had to play the role of the m
It depends what your story is for, personal enjoyment or an assignment. Is it supposed to be rounded off at the end? I think it would be better if you made the end a cliffhanger, so the reader has to guess what happens and so it is not so sweet and finished. There is an art to short stories but this idea might need to be refined a bit as it seems like you could write an entire book on this! Maybe you could make it a bit more dramatic and detailed for example about the mother's depression or father's alcoholism and I would also suggest cutting out quite a lot of the description about your house that is not that necessary and replace it with more descriptive words other than just listing how the rooms are. This would also make space for you to develop ideas about the mother and father like i have suggested. This story could be very exciting and intriguing but it needs a little tweaking first. Hope this may help .. xx

Hey Yahoo Answers,
OK, so I'm moving back home to my room that I left when I was ten and I used to stay in all two months of summer since. Now I am moving back in, I'm fifteen, I'll be sixteen in March. So anyhow, my Granny and Pops are letting me do whatever I want to it, because I really want a fresh start and I want to change that room up a bit, make it more like a teenagers room and make it funky! I'm super excited (it's nice to be excited and have something to think about until Monday). So anyhow, I get new EVERYTHING, from the floor to the the paint to the electronics to the furniture. And my Pops is making it so that I have a bathroom connected to my bedroom, and that's the only entrance, so I'm getting my own BATHROOM! Super awesome! But I need some help, please.
Teenagers, what should I do? It's so much design work! We are talking out the carpet and getting hardwood floor, and extending the closet, plus the door to my now, very own, bathroom! I don't know what colour to paint my room! I have a large bay window and a side, normal window.
I need all new furniture- I want...a queen size bed, a desk, two end tables, a hide-a-bed couch, a chair for just sitting on, and a desk chair.
I need electronics- I want...a camera, a laptop, an iPod, a TV, a DVD player, cell phone and printer.
And anything else...
Can you help me with links you like and opinions on what brand I should get for what...ideas are what I am looking for.
And maybe some outfit and make-up help. I like preppy stores and my hair is blonde, I have fair skin and emerald, green eyes.
Thanks so much!!
Julia.
BTW...I am NOT a spolied brat, you would have to have lived in my shoes for the last five years at my mom and step-dad's house to understand that. My grandparents are re-doing their whole house, and now that I'm moving in, it gives my Granny one more thing to change (she loves change) and my Pops one more thing to fix and work on (he always needs to be busy and likes to use his hands). Plus, I think they are just so excited for me to be back, and this is my Christmas and Birthday presents too. Plus my daddy is buying lots of the electronics, he hasn't seen me in forever and I'm his only child, his only family, and it's Christmas and Birthday stuff as well.
Thanks!
Julia.
...............lord, help the starving children in africa.
Amen.
