I want to understand some words in the folllowing.?

DEAN: “I grew up in a real small town. It was 17,000. It was actually better known for furniture. It’s the chair capital of the world – Gardner, Massachusetts.”

REPORTER: “From the forums and the debates I’ve gotten the impression that you grew up in a modest home?”

DEAN: “I certainly had a solid family. We had a nice house. My father was a sales manager, but I had the opportunity to work in high school because there were plenty of factory jobs available. I was also able to work when I was in college and law school at a paper mill. Back in the ‘70s that was a really good job to help pay for going to college at Columbia.”

-What's meant by chair capital of the world – Gardner, Massachusetts?
-What's meant by solid family?

I would think that Gardner, MA was well known for manufacturing chairs. A solid family means that he had a stable upbringing, with a father that worked hard to support his family, and parents that got along well.

  • The Natchez Democrat - New Alcorn president now on job

NATCHEZ — After a busy first day as Alcorn State University’s new president, M. Christopher Brown said Monday evening he hopes to catch some quiet time in the office today.

Brown started as Alcorn’s new president Monday after the Mississippi Institute of Higher Learning offered him the job Nov. 30.

Brown said Alcorn has shown him a great reception.

“It’s been phenomenally warm and welcoming,” Brown said.

Brown said he met with school vice presidents and deans today to learn about the existing leaders’ priorities and then conducted a few office drop-ins at the athletic facilities and the student affairs office.

“Everyone is certainly excited about having stable and permanent leadership and there seems to be universal commitment to growing the Alcorn brand and expanding,” he said

This week Brown said he has plenty of follow-up meetings planned, but he hopes to spend most of Tuesday in the office building a calendar to schedule the upcoming meetings and events.
