New Couch Or Update Current Furniture?

I am trying to decide on my best option for new living room furniture. I am definatley getting a new coffee table and side tables and hopefully a new entertainment center.

What I'm trying to decide on is if I should get a new couch and loveseat or update my current set. I found a nice microfiber set at a local furniture store for $700 that I really like.

I've also talked to my husband about buying slipcovers for both pieces and just covering them up. I found loveseat and couch slipcovers at target for $200 for both.

The only problem is the back on one side of my couch has collapsed and I will need to pull open the back to see if it can be fixed and the cushions are going flat and need to be replaced.

I would love to get new couches but I don't want to spend a lot plus with 2 kids under 5 I don't see them staying new for long. The slipcovers are microfiber with scotchguard and machine washable. My worry is will they look good? Can I get the back fixed on my couch? And where can I go to find good foam to replace the current pieces?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated or if you have experience with slipcovers and/or fixing furniture I would love to hear about it

I actually just remodeled my condo, and am facing that same situation with my couches.. I had some experience with my sister making me some curtains from simple fabric that we bought at the fabric store. Well, today while researching options, I found a woman on line that covered her couches with a few yards of beautiful fabric that she picked up on sale at Joann fabrics, and just tucked it into the couches. I am not sure how that would stay in place yet, if I would need to thumbtack or something, but she did not sew a thing, she just tucked her fabric into the sofa, and the end results were gorgeous. So that is an option that I'm playing around with, since I have a little more saving to do before I can purchase the set that I truly desire. Also, you can place small pillows, or the cotton from pillows in the cushions to plump them back up:) Good luck, and have fun!!

How can I match a variety of different living room furniture?

I've been looking through home magazines and they often feature living rooms that have couches and chairs that don't really match, but they make them look great together. How can I achieve such a designer look without ending up with something that doesn't just look like a bunch of cheap hand-me-downs? I need to do this with used furniture, so what should I be looking for? I'm going for comfortable and casual with a bit of class.

The key to getting a look that coordinates rather than matches is to keep in mind the principles and elements of good design. The principles being balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and unity which are achieved through the elements of line, color, shape, space, texture, value, and form. Take a look through some shelter (home/decorating) magazines. Which rooms appeal to you? Study the different features. Compare several rooms that attract you to one another. What similarities do you see? These should be the things to look for when you go to put your room together.

Big Screen TV in a Modest Living Room?

We just upgraded our TV to a 50" big screen. We have a very modest and homey living room. I don't know how it's going to look. It's not one that stands alone--we have to buy a stand for it but I'm not too sure how it's going to look. Any ideas on making a big screen fit in a warm and casual living room?

If this helps we already have a lot in the room. One lazy boy, an over sized chair, an oversized sofa (with queen-sized bed), an upright piano (cherry wood), DVD/CD rack, and two large speakers with surround sound. Our home office is also a part of the living room so it's pretty much just a long room.

The color of the TV is black where as all the other furniture are more neutral colors. Is there anyway to get these piece to fit in or will it always look like the odd ball? Any ideas on stands? Our home is anything but contemporary but that’s the only kind of stand we seem to find.

You can buy a wood entertainment unit to fit it... They can get expensive and most will likely be larger than you want... (Side cabinets and all....)

Are you handy with tools & wood? You can make the stand from wood.

You want the base to be only slightly larger than the TV. Measure and make a pattern one inch longer/wider in each direction. You will need to cut 2 from this pattern. One will be the base, just an inch or 2 off the floor, and the other will be positioned at the heighth you want the TV to sit.

Decide how high you want the stand. Add that height to the height of the TV and add a few inches for good measure. Cut 2 panels of wood this heighth, and as wide as at least the front depth of the TV. (It can go back as far as the whole TV if you desire...)

Cut another piece the width of the side boards and long enough to bridge over the TV and connect the side boards.

Assemble and stain a color that would compliment your other colors. That makes it not look as contemporary and doesn't cost $2000.

Place the TV in it and enjoy!!!

I didnt even see that one before but i love it. =P

definitely number 5. i tried really hard to imagine the other 4 but they just didn't seem right with the color. and also i think since your bedroom color is a darker color, the main light color of the duvet in number 5 will brighten it up and i personally like the design of that the best.

hth!

How does this look all put together? (pics)?

This is the color on my wall:
