The rest of the house has been painted this very light pale yellow. When you walk in the front door there is a double door width opening to our living room on the right. Just beyond it is a double door width opening to our dining room. So you can see it from the living room. Our dining room has a white chair rail & the bottom half of it is that pale yellow color throught the rest of the house. I'd like to eventually get walnut/white furniture for the dining area.
We have a modern/contemporoary style & a red sectional in our living room. I was thinking of painting the dining room top half a dark red (not bright, I guess with brown mixed in) & the bottom half white w/ a white chair rail. I was concerned of having too much red tones in these areas. Would it make us feel tense or angry? Or would it flow nicely. I also considered a sage green or orange? It's just such a scary decision for me since we don't have a lot of $ to redo it if ugly. Also have khaki carpet in there.
Red is a warm color, so it will speed up your blood pressure just a little. Orange makes you want to eat, so you might try an orange-red shade, then paint the chair rail and the bottom half off-white. Those colors should work very well with a walnut table.

My dining room is painted a light ivory color above chair rail w/ cream colored bottom & white trim 'squares' below the chair rail. The trim is all painted white. The trim work is very elaborate. I have ivory Lenox Laurel Leaf table linens, and white china with gold piping. Dark walnut furniture. And one window; 36x84. I would like an elegant drape to tie in all of these ivory & cream colors, but only have about $200 to spend. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate them :) I am going crazy trying to find something!
I would get a nice rod and a length of rich colored fabric(deep green, gold or burgandy) and swag it over the window. This site has some good/easy ideas....or just google....elegant no-sew window treatments
good luck

Okay so here is the hard part, I have an open floor plan. My dining room flows right into my living room, with a half wall that goes into my kitchen. I have a autumn orange sofa with a Sage green love seat. (I swear it doesn't look like the 60's). My kitchen is a light apricot, we have a walnut wood dining table with a rug that has the orange and green that is my furniture, a beige and a cranberry color. We have white wooden blinds, so no drapes as of yet. Can you please help, I am soo lost!
Pick a neutral color for the walls, and keep them all the same. It's hard for me to figure without actually seeing the floor plan -- seeing where the walls meet or where there are corners, etc.
I was going to suggest using a tone-on-tone white-wash stripe on one wall -- let's say either the one big wall or the shorter wall into the kitchen (though I'd prefer it in the dining or living room area since it's more formal of a look). It could be a white wash wide stripe over a cream/tan wall -- or a lighter cream over a darker cream, you get the idea. That way, it provides a textural feel -- it breaks up the flatness of the space and makes it more cozy.
Also, think about large pieces of wall art to hang -- maybe even something sculptural, like metal/antique, or a collection of some sort.
You could define a section of wall space for let's say the dining room by using decorative molding where you frame out a section of wall -- you can find these at the hardware stores. And, you can paint them whatever trim color you're using. You could add a tone-on-tone wallpaper inside the frames, and then hang a pretty, large mirror with an interesting frame that you could also paint to match the trim.
Don't forget the ceiling -- where you have light fixtures hanging, add some interest by using the medallions.
Keep the colors unified throughout -- and you can add/switch in a different third accent color, like you did with the cranberry. That's great.
Try something bold on the drapes for the large space -- like a bold multi-color stripe.

The Beauty of Walnut Dining Room Furniture
When you are in the process of redecorating or revamping your dining room, the process can seem daunting at first because it will definitely seem like you have a lot of hard work cut out for you – and this is actually quite true. What dining room furniture do you need for your new look? Do you want to get new dining room tables to complement your new dining room area? All these questions and more will surely run through your mind as you will want nothing but the best dining room area that will speak volumes about the kind of person you are.
How Do You Know Which Furniture is Best for You?
Believe it or not, there are only two key elements that need to be present all throughout your brainstorming and canvassing: patience and creativity.
You will definitely need a lot – and I mean a LOT – of patience when it comes to recreating your dining room area , especially if it means you will have to replace your dining room furniture. Why? Because this type of work is tedious and entails a lot of research on your part before the manual work actually begins. When there are times that it seems like you won’t find perhaps the right dining room tables for your eating area, don’t be discouraged too quickly. Accept that finding the right dining room furniture for your home is no easy task, BUT is actually a worthwhile investment as it will make your home a better place to live in – yes, even if you only need to replace your dining room tables.
