The rest of the house has been painted this very light pale yellow. When you walk in the front door there is a double door width opening to our living room on the right. Just beyond it is a double door width opening to our dining room. So you can see it from the living room. Our dining room has a white chair rail & the bottom half of it is that pale yellow color throught the rest of the house. I'd like to eventually get walnut/white furniture for the dining area.
We have a modern/contemporoary style & a red sectional in our living room. I was thinking of painting the dining room top half a dark red (not bright, I guess with brown mixed in) & the bottom half white w/ a white chair rail. I was concerned of having too much red tones in these areas. Would it make us feel tense or angry? Or would it flow nicely. I also considered a sage green or orange? It's just such a scary decision for me since we don't have a lot of $ to redo it if ugly. Also have khaki carpet in there.
Red is a warm color, so it will speed up your blood pressure just a little. Orange makes you want to eat, so you might try an orange-red shade, then paint the chair rail and the bottom half off-white. Those colors should work very well with a walnut table.

I cant afford to buy new stuff yet so id like some detailed help , step by step on how to paint all these 6 pieces and exactly what stuff to buy and what brand..
( like sandpaper grit , primer brand oil based or other?, paint brand , oil or water or shellac or whatever!, paint brushes or rollers, varnish brand etc?)
Im not afraid of the time it will take or the effort.. But i have absolutely no clue as to what stuff to buy , what brands and how to actually paint!
And as i said , no guys around to ask!
All help will be appreciated! Thanks in advance!
By step by step details i mean, everything! Like how to sand etc till how to apply the final coat of varnish or paint or whatever!
dear allee k.. thanks for the info.. ill head to ikea itself to get the cherry walnut paint. Should i get oil paint or some other? do i need a primer?..
can you take a look at the attached pics n links and the materials used in the furniture and lemme know if its paintable? Thanks!
I did a paint job on an IKEA bookcase several years ago, and yes the bookcase was the unfinished birch color you mentioned. It was fairly easy and I'm a girl too :) So you shouldn't have a problem with this!
The stain (paint) I got was from IKEA too, the stuff that come in the little cans. They come in tons of colors and are pretty cheap, and a little tin goes a long way. You just might need 2 tins for your project.
If you can do this in a garage or other covered-but-well-ventilated area, do that! Paint is stinky!
What I did was cover the floor with newspapers - completely. That way no paint can drip onto my floor and ruin anything. Then I put the furniture on top of it, and just started painting. No need to sand anything, because the wood is unfinished.
Put on at least 3 coats, and give about an hour between each coat. Let dry after the 3rd coat, and check the color - paint tends to lighten once they're dried, so if you need more color, put on another coat if you like.
Once you finish painting, leave the furniture there on top of the newspaper overnight, and if you're not in a garage or shed or another well-ventilaged-but-covered area, open up all the windows so the paint fumes can leave the house.
If you want that shiny finish, get another can of clear sealant / lacquer that you can find at Home Depot or any kind of stores like that. One even coat will do after the colored paint is completely dry, then again, let dry overnight.
Leave me a message if you have any questions, and good luck!

Set of 2 Ladderback Chairs
My dining room is painted a light ivory color above chair rail w/ cream colored bottom & white trim 'squares' below the chair rail. The trim is all painted white. The trim work is very elaborate. I have ivory Lenox Laurel Leaf table linens, and white china with gold piping. Dark walnut furniture. And one window; 36x84. I would like an elegant drape to tie in all of these ivory & cream colors, but only have about $200 to spend. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate them :) I am going crazy trying to find something!
I would get a nice rod and a length of rich colored fabric(deep green, gold or burgandy) and swag it over the window. This site has some good/easy ideas....or just google....elegant no-sew window treatments
good luck

Black Tempered Glass Lazy Susan
51" Square Table
Walnut Finish
The suite includes a buffet, a two piece lighted china closet, an oval table with two leaves, six chairs and two captain's chairs with the original upholstery. It is either mahogany or walnut (I am not sure). It is from 1970 and is in excellent condition.
well White is an excellent brand, high end.Today that set might cost $15k. In 1970 it probably cost $2000.your not going to get more than the original cost .I'd guess $1200.
This set was purchased in 1930s, American, very ornately carved, heavy, I think Oak, but tag actually says Walnut finish. Includes table with leaves that come out from underneath, 8 chairs (1 captain), server and china cabinet. Am unsure what Life Time Furniture Company is and how much this set may be worth - Thanks!!!
I would google and see if they have info on the brand of furniture, not all furniture is valuable because its older
