What's the best thrift store in Chicago to purchase vintage furniture?

I'm looking for a thrift store where I can purchase a set of 4 dining room chairs. A good selection of vintage furniture is a plus. Thanks!

I find good stuff at the Kane County flea market held the first weekend of every month. It's not in Chicago but not too far away. Bring a big car, truck or SUV.

How can you tell if a vintage piece of furniture is a buffet or a dresser?

I have my great great aunt's buffet but my husband thinks it just a dresser. It was prob bought before the 40's.... like I said it's my great great aunt's buffet- and I am 29. It has been passed down through my family as buffet but it does look like a dresser. It's very large- cherry wood finish and it's all drawers. It's all pull out drawers like a dresser. It does NOT have the tall side drawers that open up to a shelf. It's a huge piece of funiture that is very long but also wide. It only has small feet at the botton- like a dresser, my old buffet had long skinny legs before. I know I can make it be a dresser or a buffet if I so choose but I was wondering is there a way to tell the difference?
Any buffet information would greatly help!
Or I might have a dresser in my dining room!! LOL
Thanks!!

Contact Bob Brooke's Antiques Almanac website. He has a contact link where you can submit a photo and ask whether it is a buffet or dresser. He probably could tell you a lot of other interesting info, too. Good luck.

Furniture Restoration - Which Wax to Use to Improve Scuffing marks on Vintage G-Plan Furniture?

Hello

I have a 1959 G-Plan dining room set that has some wear as you might expect of something of that age, mainly around the chair legs and on the backrests.

I think that using a coloured furniture wax will improve the look of this wear. On looking at products available on the internet, I am confused about what to use and what will be best (bearing in mind I don't want to spend over about £25 in total as I plan to sell the set - I would love to keep them but I do not have the room).

Can anyone tell me which types of wax are best? The chair legs are black and the chair backs are teak so I will need at least two different colours. The set is exactly like this set on eBay (apart from mine have the original upholstery):

If anyone can give me advice on the best products to use, that would be a great help - there is so much available I have no idea where to start!

Many thanks.

Lots of choice on the link below:

Are there any commercial furniture polishes that don't leave a waxy residue?

We just inherited a cherry dining room set and buffet from my mother-in-law. I've always used Orange glo, Murphy's oil soap, Pledge or Endust before to clean and polish wood furniture.

But for whatever reason, this table gets a waxy buildup on it when I use any of those products (it is sealed wood, though I'm not sure if its shellac or varnish or poly) on it has a smeary, greasy look on it.

Are there any other items I could try that won't harm the wood at all? Its not vintage, its a set she purchased at Ethan Allen about 5 years ago.

Any ideas of other products or methods would be greatly appreciated. For the time being I've just been polishing with a microfiber cloth, but I would like to be able to polish it as well every month or so.

The problem you have, The person that finished(sealed) the table used a water based sealant. That is the reason why when you try to polish it it leaves a "cloudy" look.

Now you I can tell you that I have good news and bad news.

Let's start with the bad. There is only one of two ways to do this.
The right way and the wrong.

The good news. The wrong way has an infinite amount of possibilities.

The right way would be to remove the finish and put a better one on so you don't have that problem anymore.

How does an entrepernuer explain what they do to people on the internet??

Any advice would be highly appreciated! :)
Im starting a business of antique/ vintage furniture restoration. Im in the middle of designing my website but im stumped! I cant think of how to 'word/ explain' to people exactly what it is that i do... I know that sounds a bit ironic. But peoples first impression is everything and what i say will determine my clientel.
I take old wooden furniture such as dining room sets, dressers, tables, chairs etc. and restore them. I also put my own little unique touch on them. Ex: im redoing an old dresser that was in need of TLC. I stripped all the old paint, sanded down to original wood, stained a gorgous red mahogany then hand painted magnolias on the sides of the dresser, and finished it with a mosiac tile top. I have no employees its just me, does that make me sound unprofessional?

I generally type out what I feel makes sense to me and ask friends and family to read it over. I also make sure to ask them to let me know if something doesn't sound good or give some advise (did I miss anything?!).
Try typing several copies out and read them several days later and you will be able to make changes for the better. Good luck with your business!
