I like Victorian Style or 18th Century furniture with dark wood (mahogany or cherry). I like lots of design and carvings.
The two dining sets that I looked at (table with leaf and 6 chairs) cost $2,100 and $2,400 with tax.
The bedroom set that I looked at (king bed including frame, headboard and footboard, dresser, mirror, five drawer chese and one nightstand) cost $2,500.
What's the most you'd spend on each of these?
I'm talking formal for both of these.
I too like Antique Furniture. In fact I sell it. My favorite is Empire, (usually mahogany or Cherry). I paid 2000 for
an inlaid French Set, (not Louis or Provencal). 8 ft Armoire
marble topped nightstand, 5 foot parqueted bed.
My Empire bedroom cost 2000 20 years ago. It's now worth
10. So the prices sound good. As long as you really love
the pieces.

I have a huge antique Victorian pedestal dining table with a center hidden leg and four Griffins (or similar animal) carved and supporting the center pedestal. The only markings on the table is a stamped "Crescent No." on the underside of the table top. The table measures 54" square and has five 11" leaves. I want to sell the table, but need some information on it. Is anyone familiar with the company? Or do you know where I could get some information? Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the help on this. The link, however, is not the same company. Note the spelling of the word Crescent. So, if anyone has some info, I would be grateful.
Here's a link to Crescent furniture. They have been in business for 60 years. E-mail them and ask your questions. Good luck!
I have just bought a small Victorian mid-terrace house and need to furnish it. Problem is; the front door is so narrow and the largest window (back dining room) is only 90 centimeters across/wide. I think alot of the front window and door space has been reduced because of double glazing ... still, I have looked and looked online and in department stores for a nice, comfortable sofa, not large but at the same time I really don't want something too small and uncomfortable. So, I can't be the only person who has this problem. How do I fit furniture into the house. Most of the sofas I have seen and liked are more than 90 cm (D) I assumer this means depth. When measuring, is that the number I need to be aware of? Can't furniture be brought into the house at an angle? Very frustrating; want to spend my money on something nice but can't seem to! Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks, in advance.
Having worked for a furniture removal company try this:. measure the height of the door and width.Pick out one that is not as long as the height of the door and the height from the floor to the top of the arms is less than the width of the door. When you get it to the door get a blanket and put it on the ground outside, stand the settee on one end ,depending which way you have to turn it, when you start getting it through and slowly pull it through on the blanket feeding it round and bringing the back in last getting someone to steady it as you pull.If its taller than the door slope it back and get the bottom through first and let the top through after. Or you could possibly 'three corner' it ,two people ,one each end, lift from the bottom and lower the front down so it comes through with the front of the arms and the top of the back skimming the door frame, mind the casters on the frame and wall. Most settees will go through normal sized doors. This is if you cannot get it delivered by the supplier.

Would you pay $900 for this dining room set?

I am supposed to be buying this dining room set from a lady on Craigslist. I went to look at it yesterday and really like the style of the furniture. It's a 15-year old set and it's a Drexel Heritage collection. There are eight chairs (2 arm and 6 side), a buffet and china cabinet with hutch. The table also has two leafs. Overall, it is in good condition. There is a scratch on the left side of the table (on the top) that will need to be buffed out and repaired, but it's not too bad. The chair cushions are like cordouroy or something so I am going to buy some fabric that I like and recover them. Other than a couple of minor knicks (normal wear and tear) on the buffet everything looks good.
Do you think this is worth $900? I know you can't get quality furniture anywhere for that price, but I want to make sure I am doing the right thing. I need other opinions. In my living room I have chocolate brown leather with claw feet and hands (the wood is mahogany). The end tables and coffee tables are also a mahogany with marble tops. I like Victorian style furniture.
Is this furniture too old-fashioned for a 31 year old. I like stylish furniture but I like an antique/old look. I am not into contemporary.
I think if you like it then it's worth 900. It's not too old for a 31 yr old if you love the way it looks and it makes you happy. I say go for it!

Unfortunately I can't see the picture..
My thoughts are when you find something that your looking for you go that's it!! But when your going back and forth on it and going is this what I really want? It usually isn't.
But on another note if this is what you want but not to sure of the price, Then tell them your interested and would like to get, but offer them less for it..
Some people price things high then what they really want so if they get a lower offer it is usually around what they want for it.

Restoring Victorian dining chairs for 2011 | Christian Davies Antiques
Elbow grease, not a quick spray with an anti-static polish.
When restoring antique furniture , the point is to preserve the natural aged look it has developed over the years, while removing the grime obscuring its beauty. This means preserving the patina – the natural film that develops through years of wax polishing and use. It cannot be faked or applied, and should never be removed.
The patina identifies the age of the wood and gives it that unique, antique appearance. Unfortunately, modern polishes are very abrasive and will easily break through the patina, ruining the look and value of your Victorian dining chairs.
In Lancashire, there is a tried and trusted method of restoring antique desks and other furniture – soap and water! However, modern detergents must be avoided. One traditional product widely in use is Murphy’s Oil Soap, which is used on everything from saddlery to antique desks. Most Lancashire antique dealers, however, would suggest a specialist antique product such as Liberon Wax and Polish Remover, which is specially formulated to remove old wax and dirt from antiques without affecting the patina.
