Approx. how much would it cost to hire a carpenter to build an unfinished dining room table, bench and chairs?

Altogether, 6 pieces. Table, bench, 4 chairs.

A smaller version of this: http://www.eco-furniture.com/im/3250/shi nbutsu-dining-4.jpg

This set normally costs about $3,500, so of course I'm looking to spend less than that if possible.
Ack! Thanks for the answer so far, it's looking like I should just go ahead and buy the set instead!

I would charge no less than $5,000, more depending on what type wood you wanted. I can't compete with China.

I did a paint job on an IKEA bookcase several years ago, and yes the bookcase was the unfinished birch color you mentioned. It was fairly easy and I'm a girl too :) So you shouldn't have a problem with this!

The stain (paint) I got was from IKEA too, the stuff that come in the little cans. They come in tons of colors and are pretty cheap, and a little tin goes a long way. You just might need 2 tins for your project.

If you can do this in a garage or other covered-but-well-ventilated area, do that! Paint is stinky!

What I did was cover the floor with newspapers - completely. That way no paint can drip onto my floor and ruin anything. Then I put the furniture on top of it, and just started painting. No need to sand anything, because the wood is unfinished.

Put on at least 3 coats, and give about an hour between each coat. Let dry after the 3rd coat, and check the color - paint tends to lighten once they're dried, so if you need more color, put on another coat if you like.

Once you finish painting, leave the furniture there on top of the newspaper overnight, and if you're not in a garage or shed or another well-ventilaged-but-covered area, open up all the windows so the paint fumes can leave the house.

If you want that shiny finish, get another can of clear sealant / lacquer that you can find at Home Depot or any kind of stores like that. One even coat will do after the colored paint is completely dry, then again, let dry overnight.

Leave me a message if you have any questions, and good luck!

My roommate's cat is destroying my furniture and causing other problems?

My roommate's cat is constantly scratching my expensive dining room chairs. My roommate is rarely home (works all day until 7pm) and sees him doing it but does nothing to resolve the issue. Also, she has been keeping the litter box in the unfinished basement. That has not been a problem until now... it is getting cold out and I would like to keep the basement door closed so the cold air does not come in. She keeps the basement door open so the cat has access to the litter box. I do not know how to resolve the issue. I do not want the uncovered litter box in my living room or dining room or other common areas. Is it fair for me to tell my roommate to keep the litter box in her room since it is her cat? I like my roommate and really would like to work things out in a fair way. But I do not want a drafty house or damaged furniture....
I have mentioned that the cat is scratching my chairs at least 10 times (and she definetly sees him doing it) and she just kinda shrugs it off. How do I let her know that it is an issue that needs to be resolved without starting and argument?
To the person who said I am controlling... this is my house and I am the landlord. She is renting a room in my house. Am I really controlling by asking that she keep the litter box in her room? Why should I have to keep an uncovered litter box (which she does not clean out everyday) in my living room if it is her cat?

Well, you are coming here to ask others, and that's good. You are not controlling when you want to control a situation. Someone has to, right?

First of all, you ARE in control as the landlord. I'm not a lawyer (thank goodness), but I play one on TV. Seriously, you DO have control over this, but you seem to be in a good frame of mind, and I predict that you'll achieve harmony in this home with a little creativity.

The litter box is in a good place, because the cat is using it, and also because it's in an area you don't generally inhabit. I suggest that you install a little door in the basement door. These pet doors are available online and at any pet supply store. Installation's really not too hard if you just follow the instructions on the box. If you really want to be crafty, talk to your roommate, and see if she can come up with this solution for you. Just steer the conversation in that direction, but let her say it. Then you might even get her to help you do this work.

I like this solution also because you will be able to close that door. Also, if she knows that you are willing to sacrifice that door for the cat's sake, maybe you'll have a little more cooperation.

In the event that something prevents you from that ultimate perfect solution, you'll need to let your roommate know that your preference is that the litter box be kept in her room. Litter boxes need to be cleaned at least once a day (since the cat cannot do this. BTW, if the cat finds a way to do this, please make a video of it for me, OK?). A clean litter box will not stink. A layer of baking soda underneath the litter is an even better way to minimize the smell. But the daily cleaning is just a humane thing to do for the cat. To do less is just plain lazy.

Also, I want to suggest that your roommate gets or makes a tall sisal rope scratching post, Brazilian sisal rope is by far the best material, and once the cat scratches it, it will be where this destruction happens. The best quality of this rope is that it is different from your furniture, and the cat will prefer it to fabric. It will be easy enough to teach the cat to use this new tall sisal rope post, too.

Here are links that will help you. You might need to transfer them to your address bar, OK?

You sound like a nice and sensible person. You will straighten this out.

Question about home decor ?

Hi , We just built a new home It's open concept and my walls are a tan color and most of my decor is earth tones and I was wondering how to make my kitchen , living room and dining rooms all have there own theme but I'm having a hard time because everything is all open and I think thats why I go with the earth tones , Although I do like the natural look I would like to add some color ! . Any ideas on how to do that would be greatly appreciated !

Also bedrooms: My 1 year old daughters room is sage green with dark furniture and Pink bedding

My 6 year old daughter room is very pink with a lime green bedding ! .. Right now my problem in there rooms is although the furniture is very nice I just find the rooms look unfinished and I feel there dumpy looking rooms because there no decor and I'm just having a hell of a time ,

Any ideas would be great thanks :)

Adding different colors in each room would help to separate them as well as changing the accessories in each...the earth tones will keep them connected so it balances out nicely....
Kitchen....try bold, true colors such as yellow, red or green
Living room.....use of dark, rich colors would be nice;hunter green, navy blue or maroon
Dining room......make it soothing since you eat in here...; pastel blue, pastel peach ; pastel green
In using a theme in each room you can also go with one color in 3 differnet shades for each room...Like ;
Kitchen.....bold,royal green
Living room....dark,hunter green
Dining room....pastel sage green
>=)
In your Daughters' rooms you can add many things to the decor...like;
Sheer fabric draped above the headboards of their beds, semi canopy...
Cork boards with painted frames to match the room colors;then display personal items by tacking them up to it...
Cute wall clocks...
Cute room rugs...
Shelves make great display areas and frees up space...
Cute curtains or window treatments are nice...
Make one wall a photo wall of Family & friends,; in various shaped & colored frames....
Cute wall mirrors...
Personalize their rooms by using items that can have their name put on them;or pillows & banners with their names...

Where in your house do you do your ironing if you don't have a large enough laundry area or a spare bedroom?

We have a small 3-bedroom split-level "starter home". The walk-in level has a living room and a dine-in kitchen. The bottom level is a (half, by dint of the structure of the house) basement intended for use as a family room (which we use jointly as a studio and office). The unfinished sliver of the lowest level is where the washer and dryer and utilities are. There is no room in there for an ironing board.

Presently we do our clothes ironing in the spare bedroom, as there is hardly any furniture in there at this time. However, at some point that bedroom will no longer be a spare. ...Where will we then do our ironing?

I figure that I am not the only one whose house doesn't have an exclusive laundry room ample enough for an ironing board and who will/does not have a spare bedroom... If either you were in this situation or you know someone who was, please share!

Thanks in advance for your help!
Thanks, all! These were great answers and VERY helpful! I appreciate it... So hard to pick a "Best Answer", but I guess I'll have to... Know that I appreciate them all!

I understand, we have a tri-level that has a small laundry/half bathroom combo. I fold up my ironing board and store it next to the dryer and bring it out into the living room when I iron.

They do make ironing boards that have small little legs that go on a table top. I've seen people use them in their bedrooms on their beds. If you wanted to iron in the laundry area then consider one of these. You could set it on top of your dryer and iron there and then store it in the area between the dryer and a wall. Below is a link to one at Bed Bath and Beyond and it is only $9.99!!

  • The Many Options of Unfinished Furniture | Furniture Fashion

    After being in the retail furniture business for the past 20 years I have seen so many people find the perfect bedroom or dining set but not purchase because it was the wrong stain or type of wood. Why not start off with a blank canvas and let your creativity go to work and make yourself a one of a kind. There is a great selection of unfinished furniture out there in woods that readily take a stain like maple, alder, pine, birch, and of coarse oak. Several advantages come to mind in the “do it yourself” plan. First you can get a great piece of furniture in the exact stain you want to fit an existing décor or start a new direction altogether. Also you can customizing with hand painting, crackling, distressing, or stenciling, and really make your own statement. In addition, many of the unfinished pieces are solid wood so you can usually find a quality item often much better than the typical veneer over particle board construction. Who knows, you may even have some fun!
