My husband and I just bought a new place. This is not a forever home, just somewhere we will be living for the next 2-4 years so we're trying to keep personal preferences out of it and would like for it to appeal to the masses when we go to sell. I've looked at color visualizers, paint swatches, and am a little lost.
Here is the front of the room (this picture was take from the kitchen).

I have already painted the stone fireplace bright white and will be changing the ceiling fan to something a little more streamline.
Here is the back of the room (kitchen- ignore the furniture.. it is not ours):

all the colors sort of need to work together. We are currently putting up a backsplash in the kitchen that will cover the full left wall and behind the stove/counter top. http://www.glasstilestore.com/TUSCANY-PA TTERN-SUPER-WHITE-GLASS-TILE-p/tuscanysu perwhite.htm it mimics the fireplace stone. The hardware on the cabinets is also changing ( http://images.bedbathandbeyond.com/asset s/product_images/380/120089120826C.JPG )
We have this couch:

And this coffee table:

and a black dining table for the main room.
We plan on tearing down the mantel and replacing it with a plasma tv (we will sell the tv with the place)
Any suggestions? Specifics would be helpful.. we were thinking about gray- but I like darker gray and would be afraid it would look so drab and boring. Thanks!
Generally it is best to paint a general purpose room in a neutral color. I would go with off-white, bone-white or Swiss coffee. A dark grey is too tough to match with anything in the room and after a while might actually look dirty.

I'd like to decorate an office in Asian colors and styles; A bedroom in Medieval; A living room in Tuscany/Italian colors and styles.
In the Asian themed office I'd like to display my husband's many swords and such as well as create a comfortable environment for the many hours we spend in there writing on the computer.
In the Medieval bedroom my centerpiece is a beautiful large painting I have of a lady and a knight, in which the knight is going off to war. The colors are mainly burgundy, but many other rich colors are used. I'll even paint furniture if need be. Currently all my bedroom furniture is a medium/dark wood grain.
The living room is actually a dining/sitting room and is currently decorated in nuetral (tan) shades. The carpet is multi-colored with earthy and dark tones.
I have some ideas already, but I'd love to hear yours!
(Oh, and uh...please don't suggest any Medieval torture devices for the decor. I'm not thinking I'll like the look all that much.) :-D *hee hee
asian - Sherwin Williams has colors called "bonsai tint" and "tatami tan." either one of those would look beautiful in as your wall color with black furnishings & red accents.
With the bedroom, I think the dark wood furniture is appropriate. I think I would paint the walls a medium gray, like "thunderous." looks great with burgundy.
LR/DR are great to do in earth tones because they're welcoming & cozy. take a look at "golden fleece."

Helpful Tips for Buying Dining Room Furniture
Your dining room is the welcoming center of your home, a place where you share your hospitality with friends and loved ones, and a gathering spot for those nearest and dearest to you. Choosing dining room furniture begins with an understanding of the functions you want your room to perform, as well as a determination of the style you’d like your room’s design to reflect. While certain simple styles are at home in most décor, other styles are better suited to dining rooms that reflect specific styles, like Victorian or Tuscan.
Once you’ve determined which style you’d like to feature, you can start making furniture selections that will bring your design choices to life.
At the heart of the dining room is the table, offering a place for food, games and even more mundane tasks, like paying bills or doing other paperwork. The key is to choose the table that can suit your needs and reflect your unique sense of style.
For a traditional dining room, the Queen Anne Expandable Table offers a single leaf extension that allows you to seat more people for big family gatherings. Pair it with Versatility Side Chairs for a more casual accent, or Rita Espresso Side Chairs for a more upscale, metropolitan feel.
