Solid Wood Dining Room Furniture

I recently inherited a solid wood dining room set. It is not too old, prob 10 years or so from an upscale US manufacturer. The horizontal surfaces are stained, and the vertical surfaces and legs are painted. It is in perfect condition, BUT smells of cigarette smoke! I thought it was just the chair cushions, but no...Is there a remedy for smoke odor that can be used on both painted AND stained wooden surfaces?

Try mixing 1 part white vinegar and 5 parts water. Take a clean rag dunk it in the vinegar and water, wring it out really good. Use that to wipe down the table and let it dry. That should take care of the smoke smell. It won't smell like vinegar after it dries. Make sure to use a quality furniture polish after it dries so the wood won't dry out.

I was given have a Duncan Phyfe style dining room table that is Mahogany (not veneer) solid wood, approximately 70 y/o. We use this set as our everyday table. It gets a white water stain immediately whenever any water touches the table even if I dry it right away. I have used Howard's Restore-A-Finish which removes the white marks but how do I seal the table so this doesn't happen. We would like to be able to use the table without being so careful and paranoid of drips every meal. I would prefer not to have to completely refinish the table. Also, I want to make sure I don't use a product that will ruin the finish.

My best advice is not to mess with it. The only alternative is to refinish the table. This will destroy any future value for collectors.
Use lined table cloths, and table runners. I know....If you can't see the mahogany...Use runners between large meals, and the lined tablecloth for messier meals.

In an effort to save some money, my boyfriend and I bought a used dining room table that has a nice wood pedastool base, but the table surface itself is some sort of particle board or veneer (made to look like wood)? Not sure really. Can I still maybe prime that surface and paint it along with sanding and painting the base without them coming out different? Do I need to apply a protective clear coat or do they make paints for furniture that dont need it? Im not to excited about a super shiny finish either, but if it needs to be... Any advice would be helpful! Specifically, what kinds of primer or paints might work. Im new to refinishing furniture.. (I'd like to go to a solid dark esspresso or a black antiqued finish to match some other furniture). I also plan on doing the wood chairs, a coffee table, and maybe a side table if this works out!
Ok, so do you guys suggest spray paint primers, paints, and polyurathanes or the good old fashioned brush on kind? I feel like spray would be easier and create a more uniform texture but I run the risk of drips and such... Any ideas?

The most important part of the proccess is using the right primer for your project because it allows you to put whatever you want on top of it. Think of it as wiping the slate clear and starting new! I suggest a sealer/primer called X.I.M. Primer Sealer. Its quick drying and aheres to anything and allows paint to adhere to it. After that dries you can paint it any color you like. Its easier for clean up and less odor if you use an acrylic paint (matte finish).You could then coat it with a polyurathane (satin finish or matte if you want no shine at all). Good luck!

We just purchased a vacation home in the Kissimmee area that needs to be furnished. Since we will only be there a couple times a year, I do not need anything top of line like solid wood, but not something that is going to fall apart either. I would like a mid-range furniture store. I will need to furnish three bedrooms, a living room, and dining room.

Super Target has some things there is one on 192 in Kiss

We have Ikea but about a 30 min drive from the Kiss area.
