How do I refinish an old dining room table? It has a very dark stain and some major scratches in the surface.?

I have inherited an old kitchen table and chair set. It's probably pre-1950.

It has a very dark stain but no poly-urathane. I have been using an orbital sander to take out some of the scatches but these are more like gouges so I'm not too hopeful about those. There is also a circuar water mark. I'm mindful of the fact that I may not have an even colour if I sand too much in one spot.

I would like to stain the table a beech colour to match my furniture but the current colour is very dark.

How do I do it?

I would go to Lowe's. etc. and buy a good quality stripper first, and use that, and THEN sand. (I HATE to sand:)..but if you want a fresh, smooth surface, I don't think you are going to get around it. Try not to just concentrate on one spot, do it all over, so that you don't leave "dips" in the table top...take it all down to one level. As long as it's a solid piece of wood, you shouldn't have any problems. Once you get it down far enough, and get all of the gouges out, you should be able to re-stain any color you want, and then be sure and poly, so you won't have to worry about the water marks again. When you start your sanding, start with a larger grit sandpaper, like an 80 then work your way up to a finer grit~220 or more for the final step. I wouldn't use an orbital sander though...try a finishing sander, so you can cover more area - more evenly:)
Good Luck!!!

How do you retighten wooden dining room furniture?

We have a lovely set that we got about 15 years ago and it was probably 10 years old at that time. It is all wobbly but still in good shape. Thanks!!

It all depends upon how it's put together. I'm assuming if there are bolts or screws, you would have figured out how to tighten them. About every 20 years chairs will wood joints will loosen up and need to be re-glued. This is how I do it:
* Label every piece so you get it back in exactly the same position. The only thing worse than trying to decide which of 4 slightly different pieces belongs where is to discover you've got a piece in the wrong place or wrong orientation the next day.
* If there is an upholstered "slip" seat, remove it.
* Remove any corner blocks held in place with screws
* If there are screws or nails in the joints, remove them and throw them away. They do more damage than good.
* Knock the joints apart with a dead blow hammer
* If there are broken or weak dowels, replace them. If you need to remove a broken off stub in a hole. Drill with the next-smaller-sized drill bit, then carefully chisel out the rest.
* Clean up all the joints with sandpaper or a wire plumber's brush. Easy does it, you don't want to change the diameter.
* Get some white glue (plenty of closed time), and put a light layer of glue on both sides of each joint. If you have a chair with a slab seat, my preference is to lay the seat upside down and assemble the legs and stretchers. Then flip it over and do the top. If you have a frame chair, I like to do the front legs together, clamp and set aside for a minute. Then assemble the back frame (often this is OK and does not need to be disassembled). Put the front to back members on, then add the front leg assembly. Use clamps when needed.
* Replace the corner blocks if any.
* Set the chair up on a known flat surface and wrestle it into position where it sits level.
* Wipe off excess glue with a damp rag and double check all the joints for tightness
* Leave undisturbed for 6 hours or more.

Tuscan themed dining room and living room ideas?

My house is a raised ranch. My living rrom and dining room, hallway and entry way are all the same wall basically. I painted it a mustard yellowy golden color for walls. The ceiling is a buttery yellowish color. I have a dining room set that could adapt to the Tuscan theme. I am changing my old living room furniture. What should I buy? I want a love seat and 2 side chairs only. Coffee table and probably 1 end table. I was looking on line for pictures of Tuscan decor. I can't find them. I'm finding pictures of places in Italy but not appropriate for my budget or taste. What colors should I buy for furniture? My kitchen is in a dark red brickcolor which goes well with the gold in the other rooms, since you see all the rooms as you come up the staris and I have red and gold accent pieces in my kitchen.

Can someone help?
it sound like it's bright. But it really isn't with everything put back into it. I wish I could show you guys a picture. At night, especially, the room look like they glow.

I went with a Tuscan theme in my house too. Burgundy, yellow, turquoise, olive green are my colors. I have an open floor plan and plan on painting all my walls a goldish brown.
Southern living has unique Tuscan style housewares, see site below, I have the olive jar.

I think an olive green love seat or chaise in velvet would look classy perhaps a few wrought iron pieces (benches, end tables, side chairs painted black) old vintage posters or replicas, postcards and wood signs look cool. An old farm kitchen table can be used behind the sofa/loveseat or the legs cut off for a coffee table. Small ceramic tiles are a neat accent on a shelf or hung in multiples on the wall, over a window or a door. Chandeliers, sconces, wine rack and pottery add the feel of Tuscany.

here's a little project for ya;
get a shadow box and fill with winecorks or toss a bunch of corks in a basket.

A Special Name For My Dining, Pool, Drinks, Family room?

I have this huge room which has the pool table in it. I put a top on it and put some heavy dark wood old furniture ( Ball & Claw ) into this area. I have a feature wall in terracotta with red and yellow copper plates hanging. The other walls will be filled with portraits and paintings. I am trying to create an old world dining room look. Now I need to name it. 10 points for the best idea.

Perhaps you could name all the rooms in your house, pick a theme and name them all in accordance. For example if you went with rivers you could have: Mississippi, Missouri, St. Lawrence, St. Johns, Tennessee, Nile, Amazon, Rio Grande, Danube, Volga, Rhine, Seine, Rhone, Ohio, Colorado, etc.
Or perhaps after one of the nine muses
Calliope
Clio
Erato
Euterpe
Melpomene
Polyhymnia
Terpsichore
Thalia
Urania

or if you're only after a name for that room in particular perhaps you could name it after the style that is most prevalent, baroque, rococo, jacobean, queen anne, georgian (sounds like your furniture).

Good luck :)

What are your view on keeping a large american style fridge in a dining room?

Our dining room is fairly spacious with old antique furniture but would the fridge look out of space. It's just that our kitchen is too small and we need a large fridge as there area lot of people in our family.
Our room is about 3.6 x 4.5 metres squared
Are fridges only for kitchens??

Yes it would look awful, fridges are only for kitchens or utility rooms

  • Home Decorating Tips for Your Dining Room

Everyone wants to have an elegant home decorating style in the different areas of their home. But let’s admit it, not everyone has the financial capacity to redecorate their home according to their preference and some do not have the time to do some essential decorating.

Giving your dining room a fresh look is actually inexpensive and easy. Just change your seat covers and you will get a brand new appearance for your dining room.

For sure you have felt like you need to change the color format of your dining table as part of your decorating activities. Perhaps you have tried changing the table cloth or the curtains but you always end up changing them again because they do not match to your dining seats’ color.

To resolve this tiny home decorating problem, purchase a new set of seat cover and compliment it with the color you like for your dining area. Make sure it is your choice.

By getting a new set of chair covers, you save a lot of dollars because you no longer have to change the entire dining set. This will give your old dining set a fresh appeal and your guests wouldn’t even notice that they are using the same old dining room furniture all because you have a great decorating skills and because you know how to pick the right materials and colors suited for your lovely dining area.
