what color dining room set should i buy? My living room set is pretty modern.?

As in, it consists of 2 three seater couches and 1 one seater couch. The color is exactly not black. But when you first look at it, it is somewhat black and when you really look at it, it is navy blueish black. 2 side tables are made of oak and glass. the coffee table is glass with stainless steel sidings. i have another oak bookshelf near it and a black metal bookshelf/tvshelf. 2 stainless steel lamps and side table lambs are beige/cream colored. My current dining room set is made of glass top and ocean blue upholstery velvetty/satin chairs. the chairs don't match with the couch set, i know. but i bought things on sale etc. i really want to buy a dining room set that matches my other furniture. So should i go for glass top or wood top? If wood, should i go for dark wood tops and black/brown leather chairs? I don't like upholstery chairs b/c guests always spill things on them. please help. brown or black leather chairs? glass top or wooden top?

You've described a total mishmash of oak, glass, and metal of various colors. Maybe it all hangs together but I doubt it. Assuming it all looks thrown together, I'd say oak is the odd man out and should be avoided/replaced. The dining room chairs ideally should be midnight blue like the sofas but black is certainly preferable to brown. The table should be high tech, not oak. I think flat black steel would make a great table but I don't know if anyone makes them. Glass is a cliche but at least fits the high-tech look that I think you should be striving for.

Help finding a specific table and company?

So, I'll admit this is a little stalkerish, but my colleague (who I'll never see again so it won't matter if I copy) had a wonderful table she uses as a desk. It had rectangle tempered glass for the top (almost large enough for a dining table) and the base was red painted wood in an X using cross joints. Similar to this (http://www.finewoodworking.com/item/2454 2/red-oak-mondriaan-frame-coffee-table-w ith-rough-granite-top) but not square patterns... it's an X pattern that is parallel to the glass, so that the four corners of the X become the supports at the corners of the table.
I was curious to know who made the table because she mentioned that it was a company SIMILAR to Ikea (but not Ikea), so they have a bunch of modern furniture for a reasonable price. You can just flip through their catalog, order and assemble. So any ideas on what the company is would be welcomed as well.

Why don't you just call her, tell her how much you like her taste, and ask for the name of the company? Otherwise, Google glass top tables and see if you can find it.

Paint Wooden Bookshelves or not?

I am remodeling my 1,200 sq ft. condo from top to bottom - more an eclectic contemporary look. I don't want too modern because it tends to look cold and/or cheesy if taken to the extreme. I like fun and quirky items too - with lots of color.

I have a really large bookshelf wall with ladder, moldings, doors and wraps around 2 walls with a corner unit and end units. I picked out the modular sections specifically for the space it is in. From a company no longer in business - Storehouse.

This is what the shelf looks like

- but mine fits floor to ceiling and is a medium oak wood (more warm tones and lighter) - not dark like this.

So, the designer I hired and a good friend (they are good friends with each other too) don't like this shelf and think I should get rid of it and/or paint it white or something. I guess because it is a bold piece I placed in my dining room area - rather than have a dining room table. I like books.
If I paint it and hate it, I have destroyed it.

They are the only two people who have ever disliked it, in 7 years I have had it.

My reaction o painting it was negative, but thought I would ask what other people think. I am ultimately going to make the decision, but it bothered me that they disliked it so much when I absolutely love this piece. Then again, maybe the modern style now is to paint furniture?

Should I keep as is and decorate around it? or should I paint and decorate around it?

If its a nice wood and has a nice grain i would suggest sanding back the whole piece and going over it again with a nice varnish to really show off that nice wood. If its not a nice colour wood or not the wood colour you desire you can pick up a stain which isnt expensive and can make your piece look like any type of wood you want.
Nothing is more beautiful than i nice woodern piece thats presented well. Alot nicer than a painted one!

Help with picking colors for my living room?

I am moving into a new apartment and need some assistance in picking colors for my living room / dining room (extension from living room that will be made into a bar) and hallway which connects to the living room.

The living room consists of mostly black furniture; black leather sofa, love seat, and chair, a black frame big screen tv, Black coffee table with silver legs, black side tables with silver legs, 2 lamps with some silver in the frame. A silver color entertainment center. The carpet color is dark beige. The extension (which I want to make into a little bar) has a oak wooden floor and I have a bar set that is black in color. The hallway also has a dark beige color carpet.

I want the living room to have a modern look. I was also thinking about making 3 walls one color, and the wall that you see when you walk into the apartment to be of a diffarant color, perhaps the same color as the hallway? I would also like to blend in the bar extension to the color of the living ro

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think it would look terrific if you paint your accent wall a dark red like "fireweed" (# 6328), and then paint the rest of the room a tan-yellow like "stonebriar" (# 7693). I think it would look very stylish with the black & silver furniture.
