House is currently 80's country. The woodwork is lt golden oak, white cabinetry & shiny hardware, shiny brass glass fixtures - my style is Tuscan, darker woods, marble, iron, rich earth tones. Mission also appeals to me, again, medium to dark woods, black iron, ect.
I am repainting the entire interior - walls & ceilings - that's already in the budget & is top priority. I'm thinking a shade similar to latte but w/ a neutral to slightly warm cast to it due to the woodwork.
I want to incorporate as much antique looking black accent as possible, I love the old look & I have a lot wrought iron decor pieces.
For furniture, I'm thinking leather, classic medium brown leather sofa/chair, need to find a dining table that is that lt wood, hopefully with some black iron accents. The LR has a stone fireplace, though it's grey instead of tan which seems odd to me.
Very tight budget - suggestions to incorporate my tastes into this home? Photos for ideas?
What type of hardware would you suggest?
Repainting the cabinets, as much as I would love to, isn't really practical right now. I can't afford to have them done and it's just not possible for me to do them myself at this point in time & have them look nice.
What about window treatments? I'm a "less is more" person. I'd like matching iron hardware on all the windows but not sure what kind of curtains I want. There are bright white wooden blinds on the bedroom windows but not the living room/dining room. Privacy wise, I'm ok with sheers though ... Color suggestions?
I also really like plants and am thinking some hanging drapping type plants in front of the large dining window (which faces back yard) would add a degree of privacy but not block too much light and view. I saw some pretty wroung iron hangning pots that were inexpensive. I just don't want to go overboard with the black.
brass & glass? tape off the glass, spray paint the brass with a flat black spray paint made for metal.
paint kitchen walls a soft yellow (matches with the existing colors) and pick areas to go over in a darker shade of the same color. what i did was to buy a gallon of dark gold paint...then i mixed a small amount into a gallon of white (same brand, with about 2 cups removed & reserved) and painted the kitchen. then i used the dark gold and watered it down a little and rubbed it in some areas. then i went over the same ares with the dark gold not watered down.(kinda like layering on blush or eye shadow. lol) then i used a little bit of the white an rubbed it in small patches randomly. the overall effect was that the walls had aged and mellowed over time.
against the soft mellowed tones of old wood (your table perhaps?) and the aged look of the walls add red or royal blue...while using the black accents.
go for plain and simple in the dining room table. to much black iron will overwhelm. it is for accent only :)
green plants are good. thyme or ivy would probably work in the dining room window, with some old shutters hung below, as they are a natural for the tuscan look.
have open display shelves. colorful majolica peices work well, as does colored glass (in jars or bottles). use lots of terracotta. display various pastas in jars, a braid of garlic or oninons, jars of olives, and fresh flowers on the table.
the stone firplace sounds fantastic. display some copper pieces,or baskets, or terracotta and fresh flowers, and a wonderful 'old world' type of picture framed in black.
if you have a wall that is just right - write something on it! in the kitchen 'bon appetite' or 'Vino vecchio, olio nuovo'
- old wine and new oil or 'Non si vive di solo pane' -
one does not live by bread alone.

This beautiful Mission Bungalow Dining Table features dual cable glides, brass alignment pins and two (2) 18" self storing leaves
the fireplace is done in terra cotta tiles (including the hearth). there is a copper door over the fireplace opening. copper ceiling tiles, and dark wood panelling that goes about 2 1/2 feet up the wall from the floor. the floor is medium/dark hardwood. right now the walls are kind of a putty color (like the color of an old band aid) its real ugly--the previous owners did it. this color would also have to extend into the dining room because the two rooms are seperated only by an arch. also what color do you think the window treatment should be? the only furniture i have is a reddish-brown leather love seat and a big rattan wing-back armchair. i have 2 mission-style table lamps with amber glass shades. the hanging light fixture in the dining room is similar. whats some ideas for color and maybe furniture?
there's a bay window in the dining room and a large double window in the living room. the top 1/3 of the windows are stained glass (amber, red, and white)
the ceilings are 9'6" high if that makes any difference.and there is a crown molding the same color as the lower panelling.
whats a "window scarf"?
hey boodles: wouldnt a mustard yellow clash with the copper? and what shade of orange do you think for the dining room?
I would go with a really rich warm color. Not any pale beiges or whites, but maybe a tan, rich cappuccino, or golden tan. For the dining room, I would use the exact same color only about 2 shades lighter. Therefore, I believe one of your walls would be the lighter color along with the dining room and the other 3 would be the darker color.
I would go with semi-sheer chocolate curtains or a gold sateen.
For wall hangings, i would be tempted to go with black and white photos or landscapes with white matting and black frames.
good luck!

I'm not an expert decorator so I need some serious advice on hooking up my apt. I'm looking for LR and BR furniture. I'm kinda fixated on the mission style furniture collection at Target, which I found very appealing, and inexpensive. I like it because it matches the finish of my dining room set which is an oak finish... it's not mission style but looks like it would blend in pretty well. My friend disagrees with me on it because she says that mission style furniture is more suitable for offices. So now I'm undecided and not sure what to go with. Would it be wise to go with my initial decision, or should I look at a different type of furniture style instead? And also, is it common for people to have different styles of furniture for every room in their home, because I wouldn't mind getting mission style for my LR, but not sure if I wanna include it in the BR. I'm a bachelor, I live alone, so I need decor that can suit me well. Any advice would help. Thanx!
There is a type of decorating called, "Eclectic". This is where you use all styles of furniture design/looks in together. If done well, it looks much better than when people use just one style.
As for combining the mission with the other oak, just go ahead and do it! It will probably look fine. Your friend's opinion is not correct, and your friend doesn't have to live there. Add some plants to your decor too, They always add so much to a room and are cheap, and they go with everything. And I noticed that all of the other answers a great.
I used to just go to yard sales and get furniture and I got a lot of compiments on my home. It's all in the way you put it together. And as one person mentioned, color is important. Maybe you would want to go with about 3-5 coordinating colors a couple of color ranges. My living room right now has a rather rust look, which I used to hate when I was growing up, but I've done it differently. It has the medium to dark wooden furniture, a rust sofa and love seat, but I've livened it up with some torquoise, dark greens, blues, a tiny bit of red, and a painting that I admit is way too large, yet has all of these colors in it. And then quite a few plants, some to sort of separate the room into two sections.
Also, don't get stuck into thinking that everything has to be parallel and perpendicular to the walls. Try some diagonal positioning to see if it works.
I have actually been basically upgrading for years in my furniture buying. Going from yard sale and found on the side of the road items to cheap furniture to more expensive individual pieces. I agree that Target, though it looks great, might not be the best place to spend a lot of money at once. You might try a piece or two and see how it holds up. You don't have to create the perfect look in one day.
