Open concept kitchen, table and chairs and such are now a maple finish, new kitchen is a mahogany finish. Dining area runs right into kitchen. Should I have matching furniture?
No, just find other ways to tie the rooms together, for example, if you have stainless steel appliances, get a stainless steel vase or bowl for the table. If you have red placemats, get red accents for the kitchen. Having wood that is different finishes, but still looks good together shows that you put some thought and creativity into the room. It won't look like you walked into the showroom and cashed in on the maple finish close-out sale.

My elderly parents (ages 86 and 90 years) are downsizing and moving. They have a lovely mahogany dining room suite (china cabinet, sideboard, table with leaves and 8 chairs) marked Marietta Chair Company. It is in pristine condition and I would like to get the maximum $ for it for them as they are on a very fixed income.
This set was not new when they purchased it in 1949 and I am guessing it is at least circa 1930.
I have Googled Marietta Chair Co. and pretty much come up empty handed. Any suggestions for how to go about tracking a value for this furniture before I put it on the market for them?
Thanks,
Teddy Maude
The best idea would be to contact a local auction house in your area and ask them what previous mahogany dining sets have sold for in your area. If they are cooperative, email them a picture and ask for their opinion. In my experience and prior observation, I would estimate 800-1200 dollars at a professional, upscale auction. You might get more than 1200 if you were to sell at a consignment/antique shop but keep in mind, they also ask for a part of the profits that is generally greater than at auction. Large sets of furniture generally do not command high prices at auction because people need the suitable space as well as to arrange transportation. The maker you listed also appears to be a regional furniture maker, so you would be best selling it locally (not on eBay) in case someone is interested in having regional pieces in their home. Unfortunately regional furniture makers do not command prices above standard for their pieces, it is only when you get to truly famous makers/designers that there is a premium paid for the manufacturer's lmark. I hope this helps, but definitely contact a local, reputable auction house first because they can tell you how furniture suites are selling in your area. And respect what the appraiser has to say. If they appraise the pieces at one price, do not expect them to sell for 10x that. People sometimes figure sentimental value into the value of their possessions.

I have to paint a wall and I am trying to find the right color that matches the furniture in the room which are mostly mahogany and plum colors.
It's a dining room so I want to paint a warm and inviting colors. What paint color would match that?
play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to help you imagine how the colors will look together. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think "stonebriar" (# 7693) might look sharp.
You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & for $5 they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

Set of 2 classic Windsor chairs for use at the dinner table from Winsome Wood
The suite includes a buffet, a two piece lighted china closet, an oval table with two leaves, six chairs and two captain's chairs with the original upholstery. It is either mahogany or walnut (I am not sure). It is from 1970 and is in excellent condition.
well White is an excellent brand, high end.Today that set might cost $15k. In 1970 it probably cost $2000.your not going to get more than the original cost .I'd guess $1200.
I have a decent sized dining room, with 10 ft ceilings. The room will have dark wood furniture, a little lighter than mahogany. I want something that is classy and "dressy" looking yet not too over the top. Which one do you like best? If none them please suggest some.
Thanks so much!

it's a very warm room, with golds, browns tans and burgandys
I like the last two, but something you should consider, if your table is round, either of them will be fine, but if it is rectangular, I think a chandelier looks better when the shape and length compliments the table. It doesn't have to be as long as the table, but a rectangular table looks better with a longer chandelier, and round table looks better with a round chandelier, an oval table I would go with long. So the size and shape of your table as well as the size of the room are important factors. A rectangular table also looks good with two smaller chandeliers going the length of the table, or a couple of pendant fixtures going almost the length of the table looks good too. I would stay away form the silver if you have warmer tones, unless the silver tone is going to be accented in other places, hardware on buffet tables, etc.

Mahogany Chippendale Dining Table, China Cabinet and Buffet Table
When I think of my grandmother’s place I think of a house full of older furnishings with steep roots in traditional design. Many of our design influences come from relatives and also the generation in which we live. It is funny today to see certain clothing come back in style that was in style twenty years ago. I also hear music that I grew up with that is now being used to advertise luxury goods such as a BMW. Well my grandmother’s era was characterized by fine wooden furniture designed by craftsmen with a flair for intricate details. Often, the elegant legs or arms would have etchings or carvings that provide additional detail and flair to the wood. I found this Chippendale dining table set and matching buffet table and was reminded of such details. First of all, the set is made of mahogany wood. Furniture made in mahogany is almost a rarity to find these days. Pieces are stained in colors that reminisce of the fine wood, but they are usually not made of mahogany. I also see the detail trim around the table created by small carvings to enhance the table’s appearance. The chair backs also have matching carvings to create a flow to the room and to blend in with the table. The buffet table and matching china cabinet add to the steeped elegance of the room. This is a fine traditional set for any house. I would expect a grand dinner party to be served in this setting.
