Light Oak Dining Furniture

My living room and kitchen area are almost one large, great room space. I have light oak cabinets, trim on the windows,and kitchen dining floor. I would like to purchase new furniture in the navy and white combination uplostery. Will this work? One salesperson said that I shouldn't do it, but go for the warm tones.

I think it would look great. If you think about a color wheel, w/the yellow/orange tones of the oak cabinets on one side, you'll notice that blue shades are opposite on the wheel. So navy would make for a nice contrast to the warm tones of the cabinetry. Also, any shade of blue is a classic pairing w/white and wood tones, people do it all the time (including myself)! Go with what you like; the salesperson won't be living in your house.

I have light oak dining room furniture and will soon be putting in hardwood flooring. Does the color in each, have to match or should they contrast with one another?

Your floor choice should not depend on your furniture color as it will be there for a very long time and your furniture may be replaced in the future. So, why restrict yourself?
A medium oak will be better for resale and also much easier to maintain. Darker floors show the dust more. Your best to place an area rug down to break it up. If you think about it, would you not move into a home based on your furniture? Choose something that goes with the style of your home. I have used walnut floors in a very formal area with mahogany furniture but...had large Persian rugs to set the furniture on. For resale it wasn't the best choice as people have different styles of furniture. Look at the white and red oak.

We have a new oak table in our kitchen/dining room and I'm worried that it will stain easily, especially with red wine.

How easily does oak furnitre stain? This is quite a light oak, and it doesn't appear to have been treated at all, apart from linseed oil ( I think)

Is there anything we can use to seal it against staining or should we just live with the "inevitable" ...?

Oak "will" stain just like any other wood if left untreated. If you want to preserve the beauty of the grain, get a high grade polyurethane and put about three coats on it. You can also get an oak stain, but it will still have to be sealed with the polyurethane. Good luck. I refinished furniture in my basement as a side job for two years.

I have light oak furniture. I figured a dark color would look nice but I can't decide on a color. Your opinions please?
I have crown molding and chair rails throughout my dining room too.

if you want a second color to go below the chair rail, then I'd use the "Honey Blush" color that they suggest.

I have an oak dining table. It is relatively new and the finish is in great condition. I just don't like the color; it is very light. I looked into refinishing, but that sounds rather difficult. Would painting it be easier? Would I still have to completely remove the finish?

I really like the look of dark furniture, and I think I would like it painted black. Would I regret painting a nice solid oak table?

they both take about the same amount of work..just practice staining first if your going to do that instead of paint

to paint-sand down the finish..it doesnt have to be all gone just get rid of the top clear coat layer-put on a primer (since your going dark i want to say use a tinted one)-use some sand parer and lightly sand this so that there arent any brush strakes for the top coat-put on one or two coats of your chosen colour-put on a finsih sealing coat

staining/refinishing-sand it down until all the finish is gone-make sure you wipe the tabel down so their is no dust or dirt on it-aplly the stain using a brush following the grain-put on another coat, maybe even more if needed-put on a finish coat

**personalyl i would regret painting the table..but whatever makes you happiest you should do:P plus if you paint it and regret it you can always and it down and refinish it
