My living and dining rooms are in an open L shape. The walls are pale cream. Dining room furniture is cream lacquer with brass trim. Living room furniture is a cream background with a narrow old rose stripe and a wide delicate leafy floral stripe in pale green/old rose/blue. I have two slate-ish blue chairs. The floors are oak hardwood (I just ripped up cream wall to wall). I need area rugs, but I'm baffled by trying to get something to go with the floral furniture. I thought to get a green in the living room and the same rug but lapis in the dining room. I don't want anything dark, my whole house is airy and light colored. I'm looking at Milliken border rugs. I like the Remington but am afraid it's too severe. I looked at one with an Ionica border, but am not sure about the floral border with my floral furniture even tho they are both delicate. Oriental style is not an option. I have grandsons who are often here so a too light color might not be good. Any help is greatly appreciated.
What I really need is suggestions on patterns.
Go into your local carpet store and select a really nice carpet that suits your style. Have them order a large enough piece and have it bound to the exact size you want it.
Then you can get a really nice, well wearing rug and not spend an arm and a leg on it.

Just purchased townhouse. The living room and dining area are in the same large space. The dining room is black lacquer with chandelier above table. L/R has black baby grand piano, white leather furniture and to the left of the sofa is a glass encased waterfall. What curtain color scheme would go best? Walls are white.
I own an interior design/home remodeling business in West Virginia, and all too often I find myself putting together a design for a client that I am not personally excited about. Your room, on the other hand, is exactly what I love to work with! I highly recommend that your curtains be white. This room should be white, white, and more white with black and metallic accents. To keep the mostly white design interesting, focus on textures and embellishments to add warm, classy details. I'd love to see you use a rug like this one under the piano:

If you want to go a little more tailored and contemporary, go with an area rug more like this one:

Choose white curtains that have the style and feel you want in your room. Keep the curtains simple yet dramatic. Here are some beautiful sheer white curtains that I think would be great:

Or if you want to heighten the drama and luxury further, choose a rich, weighty curtain like this one:

There are several versions on that last like with different tone on tone patterns in the material. If you just aren't sold on using that much white, or you really want your window treatments to be a focal point, choose curtains in a gold hue or maybe even a rich shade of lustrous brown (browse the last link to see some great alternative colors).
Answering your question has me all inspired to start the same idea for my own home remodel. I think I'm going to have to pair that big faux fur area rug with a version of those taffeta curtains. I also remember seeing some great white modern sculpture recently that would be perfect...looks like I'm off to shop the Internet!
Hope this helps!

We just moved from Hawaii and are starting over with furniture.
The living room/office space/dining room is all one big space, so everything needs to coordinate.
What I'm starting with:
Black lacquered piano
White painted bookcase
Beige carpet/walls/drapes
What color should the couches be? I have kids, so generally I try to go with darker colors because they instantly dirty everything. Dark (chocolate) brown?
The non-neutrals I am drawn to are soft blue, green, and pink.
I am also drawn to this particular chair and print from IKEA:

Do I need to have black elsewhere in the room if the piano's black?
Thanks for any thoughtful suggestions!
Sorry, the chair pic defaults to the blue. The chair I like is the Byvik Multicolor chair, which is white with florals.
And the trim in this house is already painted white. There are also medium brown wood beams in the off-white ceiling.
You don't have to use black in your room, as in furniture or wall paint, flooring. However, it would look good to just have a few black accents in the accessories. For example, a black vase, books, a little pop of black here & there. Especially if you have a floral couch- that doesn't seem to lend itself to anything black, unless there is black somewhere in the print. If so, you can use the black in pillows, rug & larger objects. Usually there is something black or black trim naturally occurring in the room, like electronics, a fireplace (maybe not in Hawaii) or a TV so no worries about the black piano "not matching" anything. It should happen naturally per se.
