we're moving into a new house we just bought..we're planning on painting the room before moving our things in..because its pretty darn heavy to move these things around.

My grandparents were like this and so are a few other Italian families that I am aware of today...

They have a living room in the house that is hardly ever used. They have the furniture covered in plastic.

Also, they have a really big dining room that people may use only 4-5 times a year.. if that.


I don't get why this is done. I say Italians because I am unfamiliar with any other group of people who does things like this.. none that I've seen any way.

Used to be very common especially in the North of England to use the front room/parlour on special occasions only, Christmas, possibly Easter, wakes that kind of thing,visits from the vicar ,if as a child you were ever allowed in the parlour you would be that scared to move that you'd never want to go in there voluntarily - No matter how little they were used they were cleaned thoroughly every week. I don't use my dining room very often, I have dining space in the kitchen, however I am thinking about redecorating it.....I don't understand the plastic cover thing though! I'm English (Lancashire) and grew up with this, so as my dining room is at the front, I think it is probably a subconcious thing, front room is the 'best' room which must always be pristine in case of visitors.

I have had my furniture in storage for several years & the cushions are perfect apart from an old musty smell? what do you suggest I do as it is a beautiful piece of italian furniture.

Upholstery cleaner. You can get it at any fabric store or big box store. Car upholstery cleaner will do and smells divine if you cannot find upholstery.

I'd like to decorate an office in Asian colors and styles; A bedroom in Medieval; A living room in Tuscany/Italian colors and styles.

In the Asian themed office I'd like to display my husband's many swords and such as well as create a comfortable environment for the many hours we spend in there writing on the computer.

In the Medieval bedroom my centerpiece is a beautiful large painting I have of a lady and a knight, in which the knight is going off to war. The colors are mainly burgundy, but many other rich colors are used. I'll even paint furniture if need be. Currently all my bedroom furniture is a medium/dark wood grain.

The living room is actually a dining/sitting room and is currently decorated in nuetral (tan) shades. The carpet is multi-colored with earthy and dark tones.

I have some ideas already, but I'd love to hear yours!

(Oh, and uh...please don't suggest any Medieval torture devices for the decor. I'm not thinking I'll like the look all that much.) :-D *hee hee

asian - Sherwin Williams has colors called "bonsai tint" and "tatami tan." either one of those would look beautiful in as your wall color with black furnishings & red accents.

With the bedroom, I think the dark wood furniture is appropriate. I think I would paint the walls a medium gray, like "thunderous." looks great with burgundy.

LR/DR are great to do in earth tones because they're welcoming & cozy. take a look at "golden fleece."
