Iron Dining Room Furniture

Please help us design/arrange our ackward living-room/dining-room. We currently have the Morgan Full Sleeper by Levitz (84" by 37") and a 42" round glass top iron dining table. We would like to add more seating, an area rug, a bookcase, a flat screen, a small serving table and a small bar cabinet. Please help us decide what pieces of furniture to buy and where to put it. dining room:

center the table under your light fixture.

put the serving table or buffet under the window opposite your kitchen door.

look for a bar cabinet that fits into a corner. place it in the corner where your dining room and kitchen meet, to the left of the kitchen doorway.


living room:

place your (really beautiful) sofa near the large living room window (doorway?), running parallel to that wall with at least three feet of clearance between the back of the sofa and the wall. this gap will serve as your circulation path to and from the stairs. (let the sight lines of the stair entry guide you.) center it within the 12'4" width of the living room so that you will have adequate clearance on either side for a walkway.

opposite the sofa, place your flat screen tv, centered within the room--not within the 8'+ of wall left over after the doorway. use something, perhaps a bookcase, plant, lamp, art, to balance this "off-centered" look on the right of the tv.

the 9' wall opposite your stairs would be a great place for a bookcase or extra seating or both. if you want to stick to the morgan collection, use the cocktail ottoman with elegant shelves above. (begin shelving at least 4' from floor.)

the wall adjoining your stairs is a good place for larger seating such as a love seat (including the morgan loveseat) or two chairs (smaller than the morgan chairs) with a small end table between.

find a round area rug about 8' in diameter to bring your room together and mirror the round shape of your dining room table. other circular accents (like an endtable) are good, but don't go overboard (and don't use a round coffeetable).

ultimately, your choice in for additional seating and it's position will depend on how important tv viewing is for you. if it's really important, try the loveseat. less important, use two chairs and angle them for conversation. the ottoman suggestion stems from a goal to add flexible seating to that wall without obstucting movement. similar pieces will do the same thing, or seating here can be omitted altogether and replaced with large bookcases.

if your window is sunny and will cause glare on your tv, this entire scheme can be rotated once counter-clockwise and mirrored. this means sofa against the stair wall with tv opposite. bookcases/seating on the wall opposite the large window. chairs or loveseat in front of the window, perhaps angled for tv viewing. this configuration feels less spacious, but some people (including me) really hate glare.

Here are the details.. It is an enormous room encompassing the Dining Room, Foyer, Kitchen, Breakfast Nook, and Family Room. The flooring can't change, it is a gray/white porcelain tile throughout. Right now the walls are painted a light gray, except for one very large 16 foot tall x 40 ft. wall that is reddish/burgundy. Needless to say, I don't know what we were thinking 8 years ago when we painted it...but it is ugly. Our kitchen cabinets are visible from the room and are light maple. We are in FL, so there is a 3 pane sliding glass door that looks out to the pool. Our DR furniture is a light aspen..similar color to the maple. Our breakfast nook table is wrought iron with a glass top. We will be buying new family room furniture to match the walls.

I'm open to pretty much anything, but we really like earthtones. Oh, and Plantation Shutters will be installed on the windows in a couple of weeks as well. Anyone out there with more creative vision than I? Thanks!

I'm not sure if you like crisp clean looks or textured walls....

I like some texture, so I would go with a really soft toffee color... and probably go with a slightly darker of the same color as a 'color wash'

(color wash would be 1part paint to 1 part glaze rubbed on or brushed on lightly over the 1st color.... i usually rub mine til it just shows the texture but not too much color)

sage greens would be a nice accent color as well.... I would go more neutral on the walls and add the color you like to the furniture or the accents (pillows, frame matting, etc)

I have painted a piece of furniture orange and added a tropical french style picture. The picture has a lot of orange, red, browns, and some aqua blues and greens. Rod Iron dining table with bright orange, yellow, pink fabric, (small seats). What wall color will go and make a statement? I want this little dining room to have style with fun added in the mix. I am designing on a dime.

If your walls are relatively small, get quart sized cans of colors in a family (usually on the same paint chip) and paint each wall a different shade of the same color.

My bedroom has 3 light blue walls and 1 dark blue wall, and my kitchen has 3 light green walls and 1 wall that's 2 shades darker. The different shades are from the same paint card.

I live in a humid area. My dining room tables are made with walnut veneer which is starting to come off. I have read that I might be able to re-activate the glue with heat. How do I do that? I have both an iron and a heat gun. How hot, etc?
Oops, that the chairs that are having the problem, not the table.
I have tried the wood glue option and it causes the veneer to wrinkle and/or get too large for the place it came from no matter how securely I clamp it.

heat could damage the finish. do you have a way to inject some glue in behind with a needle/syringe and then weight it down?

My am in college and next semester my best friend and I are getting an apartment together. She is kind of boyish and I am super girly. We will each have our own bedrooms and bathrooms and she said that I could decorate our Living room, kitchen, and dining room as well. I basically have two parts to my question:
1.) When decorating my room and bathroom, I have no furniture yet so it is a blank canvas. Where can I find some cheap durable pieces that I can transfer to my house when I graduate? Also, where are some cute decorating ideas? I love the home interior kind of stuff with the wrought iron and etc, but I am still yound and want to incorporate livliness! I also love pink and green. Where can I find cute accessories?
2.) For the living room and dining room, we have antique furniture that is very not our style. I will have to work around it until we can save for others. How can I modernize it and where can I find cheap but classy looking stuff to replace it? Thanks!

Check out fabric stores for remnants. For bedroom furniture, just look at an LL Bean catalog with all their painted white and pastel furniture. Any amateur can recreate that look with furniture from the junk store or flea market with a few cans of Krylon white spray paint.

Also check out the discount stores for "bed in a bag' type comforter sets and throw rugs.

Also check out eBay and www.overstock.com for all sorts of cool stuff.
