the fireplace is done in terra cotta tiles (including the hearth). there is a copper door over the fireplace opening. copper ceiling tiles, and dark wood panelling that goes about 2 1/2 feet up the wall from the floor. the floor is medium/dark hardwood. right now the walls are kind of a putty color (like the color of an old band aid) its real ugly--the previous owners did it. this color would also have to extend into the dining room because the two rooms are seperated only by an arch. also what color do you think the window treatment should be? the only furniture i have is a reddish-brown leather love seat and a big rattan wing-back armchair. i have 2 mission-style table lamps with amber glass shades. the hanging light fixture in the dining room is similar. whats some ideas for color and maybe furniture?
there's a bay window in the dining room and a large double window in the living room. the top 1/3 of the windows are stained glass (amber, red, and white)
the ceilings are 9'6" high if that makes any difference.and there is a crown molding the same color as the lower panelling.
whats a "window scarf"?
hey boodles: wouldnt a mustard yellow clash with the copper? and what shade of orange do you think for the dining room?
I would go with a really rich warm color. Not any pale beiges or whites, but maybe a tan, rich cappuccino, or golden tan. For the dining room, I would use the exact same color only about 2 shades lighter. Therefore, I believe one of your walls would be the lighter color along with the dining room and the other 3 would be the darker color.
I would go with semi-sheer chocolate curtains or a gold sateen.
For wall hangings, i would be tempted to go with black and white photos or landscapes with white matting and black frames.
good luck!
Hi,
I need your help in deciding between a full service and a 'I load - they drive' kind of moving company
I am moving from Connecticut to Seattle and have about 4,800 lbs / 14 linear feet of household goods to move. The main point of contention is my furniture (living room, dining room and one partial bedroom) which is of decent quality and which is worth about $9K.
If I use one of those (I load – they drive) kind of moving companies (like AFB or Broadway Express) then I stand to save about $1K, as opposed to if I use full service movers (like United or Atlas Van lines)
The former does not provide insurance (besides the basic coverage which will fetch me only about $2.4K in case it is their fault) and they are not responsible for things like scratches and tears. But I save about $1K if I decide to go with them.
Full service movers allow me to buy extended coverage up to $30K and since they load, they are responsible for scratches and tears. But they cost about $1K more than BE.
So basically I have to decide between paying $1K more and getting some peace of mind as opposed to trying to save some money and taking a bit of a chance (with my furniture).
Both the types of movers have great reviews
My questions:
- So I just wanted to see what kind of moving company people tend to use when they have decent quality furniture ($5K-$10K) and are doing a cross country move? - And if you have used BE for moving expensive furniture then have they taken good care of it and what has been your experience?
If you can share your views and opinions it will help me make my decision.
Thank you.
Have you considered selling off your bulky furniture where you are and buying new or gently-used second-hand furniture when you arrive? It will save you a bunch of weight and volume. If you do that, you might find that you can ship everything else via UPS. (If memory serves -- and it usually does -- they have a freight service, and if you have enough to make a full pallet, then I think you get a break on the rates.) If that works out, then you can drive yourself and your family across the country in reasonable relaxation. Though Interstate 90 runs from coast to coast with its western end in Seattle, you will want to be careful, as it does go through some territory where it gets very snowy (including the passes over the Rockies and the Cascades).
If you do move everything, leave the clothing in the drawers of the dresser and face the front of the dresser against the wall of the truck or trailer. Also, regarding the question of insurance on your household goods, you can usually buy additional insurance up to the value of your belongings for an additional fee. And don't forget to check with your insurance agent to find out if your homeowner's or renter's insurance covers your household good while moving.
Also, if you do move everything, I would recommend in favor of the full-service movers, if they take responsibility for scratches and tears. Just be sure to check them out with the Better Business Bureau, and lean in favour of national firms like Allied, North American, Mayflower (as examples).

We purchased a house last year and the previous owners had a floating floor installed prior to selling it. Unfortunately, the floor has begun to buckle, but we don't know who installed it and can't have them come out to fix it...
The floor extends throughout the office, dining room, kitchen and laundry room, so it's not a small area. With the summer months upon us, it has started to severely buckle in several random places - to the point of making the furniture on top of some areas move when we step on a nearby area of the floor.
What do we do?? We can't afford to have someone replace the whole thing, or take it all out - is there a semi-easy or semi-inexpensive solution?
If YOU have experienced this, did you find the problem went away after a year or so, once the floor was "adjusted"?
Help!
Thanks
Floating floor buckle for two primary reasons
The first is moisture ….obviously not the problem at this time.
The second reason is expansion……….somewhere between the buckle there is was no room left against walls or door frames to allow for the expansion.
That would need to be corrected to fix the problem; this may entail removing the baseboard trim to locate the infraction

about a year ago, I went to my local furniture store and was granted enough credit to purchase my living room set. They offered no interest for 2 years. My brother-in-law went to the same store last week and was given no interest for 4 years. This really bothers me...will the bank offer me the same deal and give me another 2 year extension?
in addition, my wife wants to get a dining room table, so i'm thinking of offering the salesperson a deal: if he could extend my promotional offer, then I will get the dining room set and give him/her an easy sale (i still have enough credit to take out the dining room table)
has this happened to anyone else? can I pull this off?
any ideas?
wouldn't the salesman be eager to help me if I offer him an easy sale? Meaning, I still have enough remaining credit to purchase a dining room table, however, so it would be an easy sale and commission for him. I know he has no authority to offer me an extension, but I bet he will try his best to help me get an extension. I do have really good credit (thankfully). I don't see why not.
The financing of things like furniture can vary widely and the store can offset a loss of interest by charging a higher price. They could offer you a 10% loan for one week on a chair or a zero percent loan on a different chair. Or they can do it like car dealers and give you a discount on the price of the chair if if you select a loan with higher interest. You see car ads like, '$2000 off or zero percent financing.' The only thing you can be sure of is that they did the math before they made the offer!
You can always ask for different financing. Since you are dealing with salesmen you might say 'we have a loan through your company and we were considering purchasing a dining room table but we can't afford the payments as is. Could you extend the promotional offer so we can consider buying the table?'
We just bought a 35ft camper.... It has an extended roof where the living room is we can fit our 42 inch tv, half of our sectional couch, and our coffee table in the living area... We are taking out the dining area cause we will just eat off the couch like we do now, and putting either some other pieces of our home furniture or a floating countertop with extra storage underneath, we put in a new regular toilet it has a tub and a shower.... and the bedroom has a queen size bed..... We are going to be traveling with his job and Im going to be staying home and gettin my degree along with learning and relearning a few activities... We are taking our animals and then putting the rest of our belongings in storage.... Am I crazy or will living this simple life be what we need right now..... It gives us the chance to save over 100,000? so i am just wonderin others opions..... Thanks (and please dont be mean)
You have to remember that it's the change in weight that will effect how your trailer hauls. The more changes you make the more problems you will face. You have to remember to anchor any loose furniture to the floor. That means the couch, coffee table etc need to be screwed to the floor. The big screen TV really needs to be firmly mounted, a couple of bad falls and it's history. Do you have a parks directory? Otherwise, wheeled living can be as good or bad as you make it.
