Dining Buffet Furniture

I have my great great aunt's buffet but my husband thinks it just a dresser. It was prob bought before the 40's.... like I said it's my great great aunt's buffet- and I am 29. It has been passed down through my family as buffet but it does look like a dresser. It's very large- cherry wood finish and it's all drawers. It's all pull out drawers like a dresser. It does NOT have the tall side drawers that open up to a shelf. It's a huge piece of funiture that is very long but also wide. It only has small feet at the botton- like a dresser, my old buffet had long skinny legs before. I know I can make it be a dresser or a buffet if I so choose but I was wondering is there a way to tell the difference?
Any buffet information would greatly help!
Or I might have a dresser in my dining room!! LOL

Our cats have generally been compliant when we establish that an area like the kitchen counter is off limits, but they will not stay off our dining room table & buffet – which we’ve had for about a month. The sun hits both of these pieces for several hours a day each afternoon, which I think is their main motivation for misbehaving. No other window in the house provides as much sunlight. We are about to install window treatments which may help block the sun, but I don’t think that will completely solve the issue.

They both hate citrus smells, but I don’t know how to keep a steady stream of that aroma going. This is my great-grandparent’s furniture so I have to be careful about what sprays or oils I use on/around it to avoid damage. Orange Glo has been our ally in the past, but I don’t trust it on antiques. Is there anything else I can try? Generally no one is home when they’re doing this – we just find piles of cat hair and askew table cloths/runners when we come home.

you can try an air freshener with the citrus smell on it.

you could try to just put a blanket over it so she doesn't damage it if she wants to sleep on it

I'm searching for a dining furniture set for my home which would include the table, chairs, and some sort of buffet or hutch. I've seen a few sets where the table is counter height and the chairs are actually "bar stools."

Does anyone have experience using these higher dining tables and chairs? And what are your opinions of them? Are there any benefits or shortcomings when compared to traditional dining furniture?

I had a breakfast bar with bar stools and it was practical in the mornings and at lunch time as could get the food put out on the bar in a hurry. But i would never want to sit down to a family meal at the breakfast bar. It was an effort to get on the stools and down again.

The suite includes a buffet, a two piece lighted china closet, an oval table with two leaves, six chairs and two captain's chairs with the original upholstery. It is either mahogany or walnut (I am not sure). It is from 1970 and is in excellent condition.

well White is an excellent brand, high end.Today that set might cost $15k. In 1970 it probably cost $2000.your not going to get more than the original cost .I'd guess $1200.

1) a well used dining set (table, 6 chairs, dining buffet and hutch). multiple owners. structurally sound, but the dining buffet/hutch has water damage on the finish.

ya, i was think about $100 - $150 per set. i'll post pics sometime this weekend.

Having just sold a lot of furniture on Craigslist over the past year from my mom's estate, I would say that unless the dining room set is a top brand name like Henredon or Drexel, don't expect to get more than $200 for it and be happy if someone offers you $150 and offers to pay cash and haul it away.

For the kitchen set, advertise it for $150 but expect offers of $100.

I suggest you look at the listings in your area's Craigslist for what your "competition" is. You can tell by looking at the listings which ones have been on there for a long time (just search on "Dining sets" and you'll see all the listings for two months). That will indicate which prices are too high for your market. Post the full 4 photos that are allowed on each Craigslist ad (include a closeup of any damage) and put your phone number in the ad. (You'll get e-mails from scammers offering to pay with a bank check and arrange shipping -- just ignore them.) State "cash sale and local pickup only."

What used furniture is "worth" is only what other people are willing to pay for it. Just to let you know, my mom's dining set was 50 year old solid walnut Drexel from a line by a famous designer. If I had wanted the headache of auctioning it on Ebay and shipping out of state I know it was worth about $1600 since it is considered collectible Danish Modern and the table was very rare. But I needed to get rid of it quickly and with as little hassle as possible so I put it on Craigslist. I could not sell it until I reduced it to $600 (and a guy drove 600 miles from Chicago to come and pick it up).

Typically you will get about 1/2 the value if you are willing to wait. If you want to sell quick, price it at 1/3 the value.
