Dining Area Furniture

Open concept kitchen, table and chairs and such are now a maple finish, new kitchen is a mahogany finish. Dining area runs right into kitchen. Should I have matching furniture?

No, just find other ways to tie the rooms together, for example, if you have stainless steel appliances, get a stainless steel vase or bowl for the table. If you have red placemats, get red accents for the kitchen. Having wood that is different finishes, but still looks good together shows that you put some thought and creativity into the room. It won't look like you walked into the showroom and cashed in on the maple finish close-out sale.

I have a combined living and dining room area. Does anyone know how to separate the areas? I am interested in separating these areas with a wall, partition, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to use furniture to separate the area. I want the dining room are to be more private.

Putting up a wall is relatively inexpensive. Some 2 x 4's and sheetrock. If you do it yourself it will be cheaper. Check out diynet.com, on framing a wall. It will tell you everything you need for supplies and how to do it.

Formulate plans for the dining area of an early childhood program that will help to foster children's self-feeding skill. Include a discussion of appropriate furniture and eating utensils. Plan a menu for one day.(one meal and two snacks) that will further enhance the child's self-feeding skills.

Hmmm. Needing help with homework, eh?

I've always felt it's important to serve and eat meals family style. Having u-shaped tables helps as the teacher can sit in the u part with children around her. She can reach each one if they need help. Even toddlers can serve themselves with help. Children can help set the tables.

Furniture should be the appropriate size for the age of child. They should be able to sit back on the chair with their feet on the floor and be sort of above the food on the table (so the table must be an appropriate height as well).

Utensils don't really need to be a special size. I've seen even young toddlers handle normal spoons. However, having smaller cups is good as it's easier for them to hold and, well, if there are spills they don't spill as much. :-) It's also good to have milk at the table in small pitchers so they can pour their own.

I'm not going to plan a menu for you, but be sure each snack includes at least 2 food groups and the meal includes all 4. It's best if the foods don't require cutting or, if they do, it's easy, like meatloaf. Depending on the age of the child, finger foods are great. Keep in mind choking hazards. No grapes unless cut in half. Hot dogs must be pre-cut as well. Raw vegetables should be steamed just a little for toddlers, so they're not too hard and crunchy. Choose foods that stay on the spoon well (like macaroni with spaghetti sauce would be better than spaghetti).

The dining and living rooms form a "L" and both areas are open to the kitchen. The dining room furniture is dark brown wood. I plan to purchase an entertainment center or armroire in the near future that I may paint or stain. My kitchen cabinents are red oak and so is the flooring throughout all 3 spaces...help!

I would go with a soft beige color; that color goes well with any decor.

My living and dining rooms are in an open L shape. The walls are pale cream. Dining room furniture is cream lacquer with brass trim. Living room furniture is a cream background with a narrow old rose stripe and a wide delicate leafy floral stripe in pale green/old rose/blue. I have two slate-ish blue chairs. The floors are oak hardwood (I just ripped up cream wall to wall). I need area rugs, but I'm baffled by trying to get something to go with the floral furniture. I thought to get a green in the living room and the same rug but lapis in the dining room. I don't want anything dark, my whole house is airy and light colored. I'm looking at Milliken border rugs. I like the Remington but am afraid it's too severe. I looked at one with an Ionica border, but am not sure about the floral border with my floral furniture even tho they are both delicate. Oriental style is not an option. I have grandsons who are often here so a too light color might not be good. Any help is greatly appreciated.
What I really need is suggestions on patterns.

Go into your local carpet store and select a really nice carpet that suits your style. Have them order a large enough piece and have it bound to the exact size you want it.

Then you can get a really nice, well wearing rug and not spend an arm and a leg on it.
