I like casual but elegant furniture. I'm trying to decide if I'll like this set. The people at the store think it might be too formal for my taste, but I think it looks kind of country. Thanks for any advice.
It's sort of a "queen anne meets the country cousin" style. This is actually a poorly conceived furniture design; it looks like it's trying awfully hard to be a formal "Queen Anne" set (the turning of the legs, the dark mahogany etc), but those horizontal slats on the chairs are pure country.
This is not casual in the least ~ it's the chair backs that are giving you the illusion of being a country set.
www.newel.com - Newel.com: Antique American Country style (mid 19th Cent) pine dining "Harvest" table with 2 folding side leaves and ...
House is currently 80's country. The woodwork is lt golden oak, white cabinetry & shiny hardware, shiny brass glass fixtures - my style is Tuscan, darker woods, marble, iron, rich earth tones. Mission also appeals to me, again, medium to dark woods, black iron, ect.
I am repainting the entire interior - walls & ceilings - that's already in the budget & is top priority. I'm thinking a shade similar to latte but w/ a neutral to slightly warm cast to it due to the woodwork.
I want to incorporate as much antique looking black accent as possible, I love the old look & I have a lot wrought iron decor pieces.
For furniture, I'm thinking leather, classic medium brown leather sofa/chair, need to find a dining table that is that lt wood, hopefully with some black iron accents. The LR has a stone fireplace, though it's grey instead of tan which seems odd to me.
Very tight budget - suggestions to incorporate my tastes into this home? Photos for ideas?
What type of hardware would you suggest?
Repainting the cabinets, as much as I would love to, isn't really practical right now. I can't afford to have them done and it's just not possible for me to do them myself at this point in time & have them look nice.
What about window treatments? I'm a "less is more" person. I'd like matching iron hardware on all the windows but not sure what kind of curtains I want. There are bright white wooden blinds on the bedroom windows but not the living room/dining room. Privacy wise, I'm ok with sheers though ... Color suggestions?
I also really like plants and am thinking some hanging drapping type plants in front of the large dining window (which faces back yard) would add a degree of privacy but not block too much light and view. I saw some pretty wroung iron hangning pots that were inexpensive. I just don't want to go overboard with the black.
brass & glass? tape off the glass, spray paint the brass with a flat black spray paint made for metal.
paint kitchen walls a soft yellow (matches with the existing colors) and pick areas to go over in a darker shade of the same color. what i did was to buy a gallon of dark gold paint...then i mixed a small amount into a gallon of white (same brand, with about 2 cups removed & reserved) and painted the kitchen. then i used the dark gold and watered it down a little and rubbed it in some areas. then i went over the same ares with the dark gold not watered down.(kinda like layering on blush or eye shadow. lol) then i used a little bit of the white an rubbed it in small patches randomly. the overall effect was that the walls had aged and mellowed over time.
against the soft mellowed tones of old wood (your table perhaps?) and the aged look of the walls add red or royal blue...while using the black accents.
go for plain and simple in the dining room table. to much black iron will overwhelm. it is for accent only :)
green plants are good. thyme or ivy would probably work in the dining room window, with some old shutters hung below, as they are a natural for the tuscan look.
have open display shelves. colorful majolica peices work well, as does colored glass (in jars or bottles). use lots of terracotta. display various pastas in jars, a braid of garlic or oninons, jars of olives, and fresh flowers on the table.
the stone firplace sounds fantastic. display some copper pieces,or baskets, or terracotta and fresh flowers, and a wonderful 'old world' type of picture framed in black.
if you have a wall that is just right - write something on it! in the kitchen 'bon appetite' or 'Vino vecchio, olio nuovo'
- old wine and new oil or 'Non si vive di solo pane' -
one does not live by bread alone.

We are purchasing a 1977 styled home. The home is 1020sq. ft with cathedral ceilings (which my husband wants to lower and make a regular ceiling.) You arrive in the entry way immediately into the living room to the left, dining room strait ahead and kitchen to the left of the dining room. There are currently partial walls up that we will knock down to make one great big space for all the rooms. Now, this home is soooo different than what I am used to and would like any suggestions on open floor plans that you may have. All three rooms are on the small side so open floor plan will make it seem more spacious. Upon opening the front door, after walls are knocked down, you will be able to see all 3 rooms at the same time. Any tips on making a really comfy new home for us and our 2 girls? Also, I was thinking of a white kitchen to match my current table and chairs. New livingroom furniture country/cottage style with white end and coffee tables. There is a fireplace with all brick on the far wall . Once walls are down, half the wall will be brick for the entire livingroom (which I don't like) and then the kitchen is just drywall. It will look really bad half and half. Just trying to give you an idea on what it looks like. Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions!
These walls are not all the way to the ceiling. They just stop a few feet under the cathedral ceilings. They are not load bearing walls.
The brick is a yucky brown/tan that I want to lighten up to a white. Now, we don't know if it is actually real brick or just the fake stuff. If it's real brick, we won't remove it but if it's not, then maybe we can do something about it. My hubby really wants the ceiling gone for heating reasons. I did express the concern of the first answer, and I too think both of you are right about keeping that ceiling but I know he wants rid of it though. I know it will visually make it smaller so I figure that if we lighten the space up with light colors ( I was thinking of a light sage green ) and all white trim, touches of bead board in the kitchen and light ceiling. The dining room has a patio door that looks out into all woods behind it. Great view. It is a small house I know, but great location and neighborhood..all one level. Oh, what if that brick is really brick. Is there a stain or paint to lighten it with? Maybe, he will change his mind about the ceiling once we get it?Thanks
I would keep the ceilings and put Tong and groove pine boards on it. Stain the wood a bleached white. It will go with your colors and also open up the space to make the room look larger. Paint the walls in a lighter color maybe a blue or green (but very light) You didn't say what kind of brick the wall was, what color is it?
If it is real brick I would keep it and talk to a home improvement center to see what you could paint or stain it with. We installed a large ceiling fan and keep it on low ( it has a remote) in the winter It really helps with the heat problem and looks nice too.

This chair #8666 was chosen with Marron Wood finish and hickory colored leather. It has a polished nickel insert handle on the back. It is a parson style dining chair that we have been told comes from China. It is being distributed in Canada by Laurier Furniture and we are looking for anyone who may distribute it anywhere else in Canada or in any other country. Laurier is located in Quebec at www.laurierfurniture.com and the chair can be seen at that website. We have the means to bring them in directly from China if that becomes neccessary.
try the internet supermarket where you can find almost anything I hear. e bay
No offence against Danish design but... it's just not my thing. That being said, I am living in Denmark and having a very hard time finding good quality, more traditional solid wood pieces. In particular, I am in the market for a dining room set, including a china cabinet. I think a style that I am drawn to is considered old Swedish farmhouse type furniture. Can someone please direct me to some furniture sites that offer a little more than what is typically found in most furniture stores in this country? I'm trying to make a home here that I feel good in. Would I have better luck searching in Jutland versus Sjaelland?
We have had the same problem looking for a sofa and chairs, most on offer seem to be the type you would find in a office waiting room, not very soft. we were looking for something you can sink into rather than perch on!!!
Have a look here based on Fyn
