For anything that is not upholstered, I would try second-hand shops or tag sales to find solid wood furniture cheaply. You should be able to find a dining set and living room coffee and side tables. I am leery of upholstered items, because of bed bugs and other contamination, so only get something like a sofa from a place that sterilizes their stock, or buy new on sale.

I am moving into a new condo. The main living area is not too big (living room/dining area combined). How do we arrange furniture around the corner fireplace? This corner unit is in the front right corner. The triple doors leading out to the balcony are in the front center of the room. There is a long wall on the right side of the room (next to the fireplace) and then the long wall parallel to that on the left side of the room is disrupted by the entry door into the place. Please help me on how I can arrange our furniture. Is it possible to put the TV on the opposite side of the room as the fireplace or is that too many focal points?
The long wall next to the fireplace is one of the only walls that we'll be able to put a long couch.
i guess it really depends on where the outlets are in the room and where the cable hook up is. I would put it on the wall beside the fireplace, that way you can arrange the couches to face the tv and fireplace . :) take care.

I have a matching antique dining set and I want to identify the style/period of the furniture. The back of the chairs is similar to Queen Anne however, the legs are turned and straight (plumb from the corner of the seat to the floor) not carved or cabriolet. There is a lot of detail in the turning (wide, narrow, beads above globe and urn shapes with concave cutouts running vertically to the leg). The top of the legs are square as is the point where the cross bracing attaches to the leg. Sorry I am not familiar with antique terminology. Can anyone identify this style (I can provide photos) or point me to an easy to use visual reference?

The colour is chocolate brown. She doesn't do it on purpose so please don't suggest scratching posts etc as she uses hers when she wants to scratch, the damage to my furniture is purely accidental. I can't afford to have covers made and I already use throws, though I can't cover the whole of my corner sofa with throws as they don't stay on the back and sides. My dining chairs have a very thin covering of leather so the scratches on those show the yellow foam underneath. Any suggestions / tried and tested methods please? Thanks!

Vaseline will darken the scratches, or try a brown marker

My father-in-law (a dear sweet man) made furniture. At his job and at home. We have a dinning table, a sideboard, two dressers and a bookcase he made completely by hand. We lost him many years ago. By having these pieces of furniture he put so much love in building, we know he is still with us. We treasure each one them.
