Are there any commercial furniture polishes that don't leave a waxy residue?

We just inherited a cherry dining room set and buffet from my mother-in-law. I've always used Orange glo, Murphy's oil soap, Pledge or Endust before to clean and polish wood furniture.

But for whatever reason, this table gets a waxy buildup on it when I use any of those products (it is sealed wood, though I'm not sure if its shellac or varnish or poly) on it has a smeary, greasy look on it.

Are there any other items I could try that won't harm the wood at all? Its not vintage, its a set she purchased at Ethan Allen about 5 years ago.

Any ideas of other products or methods would be greatly appreciated. For the time being I've just been polishing with a microfiber cloth, but I would like to be able to polish it as well every month or so.

The problem you have, The person that finished(sealed) the table used a water based sealant. That is the reason why when you try to polish it it leaves a "cloudy" look.

Now you I can tell you that I have good news and bad news.

Let's start with the bad. There is only one of two ways to do this.
The right way and the wrong.

The good news. The wrong way has an infinite amount of possibilities.

The right way would be to remove the finish and put a better one on so you don't have that problem anymore.

Is there a commercial product to keep my cats from scratching furniture?

I have 2 cats that like to sharpen their claws on my good dining table. Does anyone know of a product that I can spray or paint on the furniture to detract them? The scratching post doesn't do it - and they wait until I go to bed at night or am at work to use the table.

If you spray the table with deterrent spray, that will probably keep them from doing it. You can also use aluminum foil on the table, because cats HATE aluminum foil. Otherwise, you can spray the cats with water every time they do it. It won't hurt them, and it will teach them that discomfort will happen if they scratch the table.

How do you stain furniture?

I have a dining room table and chairs and would like to re-stain or paint them, but I've never done this before. Does anyone know of any good non-commercial sites that might help?

The best place to go, in my opinion, is diynet.com. It's the DIY television network website and has lots of good, free information for the beginner. The first link is to the main site, the second link is a site on refinishing basics and the third is a DIY article on "Staining Wood". Good luck!

im getting a puppy?(:?

hey everyone;
just need a little bit of help.
i am getting a puppy around easter, in the holidays.
a cavalier king charles spaniel, a bitch.
i am in england by the way, anyway how will i find a really good honest breeder?
and how what questions should i ask, and what will they ask me?
also i want a pedigree, just because cavaliers have alot of health problems and i want to be able to look at different generations if you know what i mean.
also do you think around £500 will be good or slightly more?
what's the easiest way to house train and how do you do it?
what will i need too buy for my puppy before i bring it home?
how long do they tease for, and how can i prevent it chewing all the furniture ect..?
where's the best place to keep her at night, in a crate, i want to let her sleep in my room except she won't be house trained and i don't want her peeing all over my carpet.!!??
can she sleep on my bed, or is that going to make her think she's 'top dog','pack leader'?
how can i gradually teach her to be able to stay at home for a few hours or so? and how long will it take?
can a 6month old dog be trained to stay at home, with LOTS of toys and water and things in 2 rooms, the kichen and dining room with the door shut for 8 hours because i have too go too school. can it be done?!
how much is the weekly cost?
how do i find what the right food is, wet or dry or mixed, commercial or non-commercial?
i need ALL of these questions answered.

thankyou so much, i appreciate it alot :)
-xxx-
thankyou so so so much jenna,
i very very much appreciate it.
OMG! that is expensive ahaa.
i could just hug you im that happy and grateful.
yes, this has stopped me worrying and has really helped :)

i have a cavalier! so i can answer all these for you!!

you have oto do a lot of reasearch to find the best breeders.
i feed my cavalier beneful and it works really well. so i would suggest that rather that pedigree.
cavaliers cost a lot more that 500. mine cost about 1, 000 so you need to invest in more money if you want a cavalier. (yeah they are very expensive.)
to train mine i put a bell on the door and everytime he went potty in the house we held his face near it and said "No" then brought him to the door, made him ring the bell and then put him outside.
before you bring it hime make sure to buy a crate, food, water/food bowls and a bed.
cavaliers dont chew firniture too much, if they clew your shoelaces like mine did just say no and take them away, this breed learns quickly.
when you first get it, keep it in a crate at night until it is about 8 months old.
she can definatley sleep in your bed without thinking shes top dog. this is a very calm breed,
at first leave her homee for an hour, then 2 then 3 and so on until shes used to it. amount of time it varys
yes, but 8 hours should be max time.
for food, just buy beneful, we have never had a problem with thid

hope i ws a big help.
