I have inherited an old kitchen table and chair set. It's probably pre-1950.
It has a very dark stain but no poly-urathane. I have been using an orbital sander to take out some of the scatches but these are more like gouges so I'm not too hopeful about those. There is also a circuar water mark. I'm mindful of the fact that I may not have an even colour if I sand too much in one spot.
I would like to stain the table a beech colour to match my furniture but the current colour is very dark.
How do I do it?
I would go to Lowe's. etc. and buy a good quality stripper first, and use that, and THEN sand. (I HATE to sand:)..but if you want a fresh, smooth surface, I don't think you are going to get around it. Try not to just concentrate on one spot, do it all over, so that you don't leave "dips" in the table top...take it all down to one level. As long as it's a solid piece of wood, you shouldn't have any problems. Once you get it down far enough, and get all of the gouges out, you should be able to re-stain any color you want, and then be sure and poly, so you won't have to worry about the water marks again. When you start your sanding, start with a larger grit sandpaper, like an 80 then work your way up to a finer grit~220 or more for the final step. I wouldn't use an orbital sander though...try a finishing sander, so you can cover more area - more evenly:)
Good Luck!!!

My sofas are quite a deep red colour. I am looking to get new curtains and rugs. i have cream walls and beech effect furniture with brown leather dining chairs in the room too. What colour do you think will go?? I am stuck for colours, ordered a brown rug to see what it would look like but i dont like it much and didnt know what colour curtains would match it!
well Red would match with white/cream and black.
So why not try black rug with some white swirl patterns and red curtains to match the sofa as i don't think white and cream would go nice, the white, would make the cream look dirty. Not sure brown would go with the sofa but would go well with the wall.
See here how the red curtains go well with the cream wall:

Also, a rug like this, though not neccesarily exactly like this. :

i am looking for a display cabinet for my dining room but all the styles i like are too lighter wood. was just wondering if i buy one in a light wood, how stain it to a dark wood. the specific one i want is a beech finish cabinet if that helps.
yes , you can buy wood stain at Home Depot or Lowe's.
I have Deep red chenille sofas A 3 seater and a 2 seater. My flooring is oak laminate and my furniture is beech effect. I really need to get a new rug and curtains but dont know what colour to go for. I cant go for anything too light as i have a dog and 2 children under the age of 6(hence going for red sofas). i really like Mocha colours and browns and minks but dont know if these will look odd in the room. My dining room table is in the room also which is beech effect with brown leather chairs, should i try to incorporate browns into the room to match this. I really dont know what to do! i did think about adding a red rug but thought that this might overpower the room as the sofas are quite a statement on their own. Please help! i really need advice on rugs and curtains please I have one window in the room and double doors looking out into the garden so the curtians are a main feature in the room. Thanks!
My living room is Chocolate Brown Sofa, Red & Lime Green scatter cushions & a Cream Rug....It's my fave combination!
My sofas are like a burgandy red chenille, i have beech colour furniture and brown leather dining chairs in the room also. I currently have magnolia walls but i want to paint them. I am thinking of like a stone colour with a darker contrast on one wall. i have just brought some new curtains which are like a goldy brown silk. I am just not sure that the walls will match. i dont want to be too drastic but i want some nice tones that will make a slight difference. i did want to paint one wall a rasberry colour but i cant as i have my sofas on that wall.
Any colour advice would be great thanks
I like your idea of a neutral stone colour with possibly a feature wall in a darker shade of that neutral...too many colours would be overwhelming ...why not get a sample-pot and paint one wall for a try. There are some fabulous colour selector tools around and even if you go to your paint store you can get some colour brochures to give you some ideas of colour schemes etc...there are also on-line home decorator sites that will have info on this.
