Our house has a very long living room/dining room combo with white ceramic tile. The walls are a light brown color with a white vault ceiling and dark wood center beam in the middle. There is a stone fire place in the living room. Does anyone have some decorating tips? We like dark wood and antique looking furniture. We also have pets so we can't have anything expensive.
hey.. i know that pet thing about expensive things....NOT. so r u looking for couches etc b/c u didn't mention them. What about print or colored pillows to give it some punch. Almost anything will go w/ brown/lt brown. So if u'r leaning more towards antique style decor... then go more for the tapestry prints.. ck out garage sales/ thrift stores/ vintage stores/ estate sales... even clearance bins at fabric store. U can make u'r own pillows by covering older pillows or buying a pillow form. IF u can't sew... then use STITCH WITCHERY (ask at the fabric place ) & u can iron a pillow case etc..
U can cover u'r lamp shades w/ a similar print or paint the lamps.. or try to find AGAIN at these diff. stores lamps. U should b able to find something there. Throw some large rugs w/ a neat flora print or design on the rug to add some more colors.
Antique actually uses a lot of muted/deeper colors.. i think a deep red/maroon/burgandy would look good along w/ a deep green/golds/.. don't 4 get prints framed on the walls.. put up shelves & u'r family pix in antique frames w/ those parchment mats... Throws..
B Creative & have fun~

I have an open plan kitchen/living/dining room and would like to hang two chandeliers of the same color. Which color do you think would look best from the list above? The floor is terra cotta tiles, the cabinets are white, the countertops are black/white/grey speckled granite, the walls are light beige, the door handels are chrome, and the ceiling and exposed beams are white. The furniture is mostly white, or dk.brown leather. The house is in the country with a slight Provencal feel, so it is not modern, but it is brand new.
If you want your chandeliers to stand out and be noticed then I would suggest black. It will contrast nicely with the ceiling and beams. If the chandeliers are not meant for decorative purposes, or you don't necessarily want them to stand out I would suggest using white. The other two colors don't seem like they would fit in with your color scheme very well. Leave the color "pops" for your accessories and keep your base a neutral palette. I think a copper shade would be gorgeous too!

I have an overwhelming orange dining room...bright orange. I love the color but I have nothing on the walls and I have very large, antique white colored furniture (only a table and chairs and a buffet...it's not a huge room). My question is, should I put wall hangings, shelves, pictures that are earth tones or contrast colors like blues, greens, etc? Or can I use both? I have a lot of empty wall space and it looks very awkward.
Your dining room sounds bright and cheery, there are several things you could add to make the room complete. I love orange dining rooms because Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and to decorate an orange room for that occasion is so inviting to dinner guests.
If your buffet is on a wall without a window over it, I would place tall thin candlestick lamps on each end of the buffet. This will heighten the furniture, take up wall space and provide a 'framed' area of interest. If you already don't have one, you may want to go shopping and hang a collection of plates or platters on the wall in a pleasing design. Perhaps blue and white plates or maybe white plates with earth tones would be appealing, especially if you have some serving pieces to place on the buffet. This arrangement always looks great on a dining room wall.
Another option, if the buffet is not below a window, is to add shelving above the buffet and use it to display your glassware and dishes in a pleasing way, somewhat like a hutch, with the plates upright, leaning against the wall (your shelving will need plate grooves for this) with glassware in front of the plates. Shelving on a wall without anything furniture under it is sometimes an injury risk for arms and shoulders and maybe even eyes. Keep that in mind.
Most people are tempted to place a large mirror on a dining room wall, however, if it only reflects something like kitchen cabinets across the way or another wall, there really is no point. Avoid that mistake.
Blues are a great compliment to orange and so are the earth tones, however, I would hesitate to use both as it may turn out somewhat chaotic. Perhaps if you want to mix the two, just go with Blue and Brown accents only.
Artwork will spark your color inspiration and can lead you to select other items to go in the room. So, perhaps a large piece of artwork would be another option for you. Maybe candle sconces on either side of the artwork would fill the space nicely. You can add color and texture to a room simply with table runners and linens, as well.
Go shopping without buying anything first. Then you will get a good idea what you like. Or, the total opposite: go on a shopping spree and buy whatever you like, take it all home, try it out and return the rest.
I find the process of elimination an easy way to decorate sometimes.
Good luck to you and enjoy your first dinner party!!!

Okay, the real kicker is I paint furniture, even hand painted detail, not using a stencil. But I just can't seem to form a color scheme in my mind that will pull my dining room furniture together with my living room furniture. My dining room is shabby chic. I have a huge antique dresser I painted white and added an antique cabinet on top of it. It is a wonderful piece. I have been offered as much as 1200 dollars for it.
I have a large dining table and high back antique chairs that I have also painted the creamy white. We bought new leather suite for the living room. I just fell in love with it. I have added dark cherry and solid mahogany antiques as well as an enormous cherry armoire. I want to go for the warmer colors and make the decor flow more evenly. So what would you suggest I do to paint the dining room furniture? I truly need color ideas, painting design ideas. I just don't want to go to a solid color black or red. Something difficult to accomplish would be right up my alley.
Oh, and I can't strip these pieces to re stain them. The woods don't match and the finish was in bad shape or I wouldn't have painted then to begin with.
Thanks for you suggestions and links or photos would be very helpful.
The style of the living room is traditional. The leather is medium brown. The dining room style is "Shabby Chic" which is creamy white, not stark white.
for the one asking about the scheme, the furniture is dark cherry and mahogany which are both dark rich woods. Thanks
Suggestions:
1] paint the dining room the color of living room furniture, and the LR the color [ creamy white ] of the dining room furniture, OR
2] use the same color [ say peach ] or metal [ say brass ] or wood [ say cherry ] for small accessories [ lamps/shades, vases, pic frames, rug, ornaments, candles/holders ]
3] use same fabric for drapes, rugs, or pillows/chair pads
4] add a wash of your fav colors to the dining room furniture, OR
5] add flowers, vines, whatever will go wherever you move!
My husband and I were given an antique wooden dining table with four chairs from his grandmother, a HEAVY smoker. She is 60+ and has smoked since she was 18 and has had the table since she was 20.. I tried using Murphy's oil soap and hot water, and I washed the table and chairs TWICE with a rag with a scrubber around it.. the water turned black every time. I rinsed with hot water, and the water still turned black. When I rinsed the furniture, there was a white film and yellow gunk coming off the chairs.. and they were STILL sticky and yucky.. how can I clean them without harming the wood? Please hurry, we'd actually love to be able to use them in our dining room, but can't stand sticking to a chair, and leaving fuzz from our clothes on a grimy chair.
Try Naptha. It's the same thing as lighter fluid. It's sold in hardware store paint departments. The Cable Ace winning "Furniture Guys" Joe Larario and Ed Feldman used it to clean antiques.
