Antique Dining Room Furniture

We just bought a new house that is considerably larger than our current living space. Therefore, we need more furniture to fill it. Does anyone know of any great places to buy discounted, used or antique furniture in the Syracuse area? I am specifically interested in bedroom and dining room furniture. Also, pieces that can be used as storage as well.

I also suggest that you research the kinds of things that you like in books at the library first so that you can familiarize yourself with the differences between Walmart reproduction and Wakefield originals...

I have an antique (1920 +/-) Duncan Phyfe style dining room set that I want to sell. I'm having a difficult time trying to find an appraiser in my area (SE Michigan) who's interested in giving an appraisal only. I run into mostly antique dealers that just want to offer a price so they can turn around and resell it for double. What would be a reasonable price to ask for a solid mahogony dining room set (table, 6 chairs, china cabinet, buffet) in good condition?

You answered your own question. Get antique dealers to offer what they want to pay, then advertise the items at double the amount. If the price is reasonable and someone is interested, they will buy. If you get no responses, lower the price. the antique dealers are in business to make a profit. They may have to keep the item for along time in their store. they have operating expenses to cover. so don't begrudge them the profit they make.

The fair value of any item is determined when a buyer offers a price and the seller accepts it. For unique items such as yours, you can set any price you want, but you will get only what someone is willing to pay.

Our living room and dining room is the standard T shape. In our dining room we have birch colored table and china cabinet and the living room is antique stained furniture. Do you think this clashes or is it ok to mix colors in rooms like this? Does furniture all have to be in the same shade of color in order to flow correctly?

You can do anything you want to do in your own house! Different colors of wood can live harmoniously in one room. Watch some of the many home shows on HGTV, and you'll see how well this works. Your paint, fabric and accessory colors are what ties a room together.

Our dining room is fairly spacious with old antique furniture but would the fridge look out of space. It's just that our kitchen is too small and we need a large fridge as there area lot of people in our family.
Our room is about 3.6 x 4.5 metres squared
Are fridges only for kitchens??

Yes it would look awful, fridges are only for kitchens or utility rooms

I like urban style of decorating. Contemporary, simple, clean. I have my grandmother's antique dining room set. Circa 1942. Very ornate, detailed designs, middle-dark wood. I have no idea how to go about decorating a room with this style of furniture. I would like for the room to somehow still have an urban flair to it. I don't like heavy, ornate rooms. Please help me with ideas.

Accessories and a light paint color will offset the dark heaviness of the furniture. I have a set like that too and using a double curtain rod, I put white sheer curtains imprinted with a leaf pattern in back and then lt. green silk curtains in front, on a window. (got 'em at Target, didn't cost a fortune.) I painted the walls sage green. I used a black curtain rod with a curly finial. I picked up the finial design by putting up a wall hanging with that same pattern. The wall hanging has 4 supports for four 8X10 frames. I went on art.com and bought 4 botanical paintings and put them inside. Put a plant in the corner. I bought a planter that looks like a ladder and put a wicker, and a leather jug on it. Looks great! The accessories make the room! Watch the HGTV decorating shows. Their ideas ROCK!!
