My boyfriend and I bought a house and he has cherry wood bedroom furniture (2 dressers and 1 nightstand). I want to paint the walls a lighter color to reflect the light, and to offset the dark wood. Suggestions?

I'm looking for furniture makers/brands that make solid wood bedroom furniture without veneers, and preferably ones that use old-fashioned carpentry techniques like dovetails, mortise and tendon, etc... Also, on another note, is Broyhill a good furniture company? My sister is looking into getting the Fontana collection for her room and I wanted to check that out for her. I'm still trying to see if I can find solid hardwood furniture before I give up and go with something else that uses veneers. Thanks.

Our bedroom furniture is antique but in great condition. I have a long dresser with a huge mirror and a tall dresser. How can I update the look? Can you paint wood? It also has a shiny finish on top.
Don't mess with the finish on the furniture. You can change the look of the room by adding modern artwork and new comforter,shams and tailored bedskirt.
You could change the hardware on the drawers to something more modern. Just take one of the pulls with you to match up so you don't have to drill new holes. Also save all the old pulls. Place in a ziplock bag in one of the drawers.

Top is some type of pecan stained wood and doors have "plastic curly-cew" insets. Yuck! Refinish top and paint doors?
Before attempting to refinish you need to know what exactly what existing finish is. Is it faux painted wood grain?, if so you can only scuff, prime and paint (using any one of a large selection of paint effects).
If its stained hardwood veneer than you can strip and re-stain/refinish. Stripping can be done by either sanding and scraping or by chemical strippers.
The plastic curly-dos can probably be gentled scraped off with a good glazing type putty knife, do this before attempting the balance of the refinishing, regardless of whether you are going to repaint or refinish.

Black furniture seems to be completely out of fashion now.If you look in any of the mail order catalogues which have stacks of different furniture items there is no black offered. Last year I wanted to dispose a black ash dresser/sideboard unit as recent decor changes meant it was not in harmony with the new colour scheme. It was in prime condition, with glass doors,working lights,no marks or blemishes but ads in the local paper brought no response. I offered it to two hospice charity shops but both declined it as they said that nobody wanted black furniture and it would only clog up there shop space.In the end I put it out for the dustmen and it ended up on the council tip.It seemed such a pity.When originally purchased it was quite an expensive item.

I am moving from Oklahoma to Arizona. We are leaving out this Wednesday. I have a two bedroom apartment with very few "must take" pieces of furniture. I have a fairly nice black bedroom suit with Queen Bed, Dresser/Mirror, Armoire, and night stand. At first there was no way I was leaving it but when I look at moving van prices plus gas, I don’t know. We have two vehicles and was going to have to one behind the rental van so there was an extra charge. I have the regular furniture, nothing too expensive, which include twin bed, dresser, couch, inexpensive TV stand, wood tile dining room table with 4 wood chairs, plus linens, kitchen ware that includes a cookware set I have to keep. Should I put stuff in storage although the only thing I really want is the bedroom set, or should I sell everything including the bedroom set, quick and cheap and just pack both cars with LCD TV and clothing, etc. The cheapest rental truck for our stuff would be 599.00 and then we would have to pay mileage on approx. 400 of the miles. We(myself and 2 daughters 23 & 17) will stay with my sister/family for approximately 2 months and then move into our own apartment or house. I am an RN so I should be able to find some good deals on furniture that I could afford. Thanks for taking the time read this.
