Wood Bedroom Furniture Sets

Hi, I don't know much about furniture other than saying something is cute or not, but I was told by a friend that I should stick with solid wood construction and avoid veneers, but I noticed that there are a lot of different varieties of wood used in different furniture sets. So far I've seen pine, maple, oak, alder, cherry, and mahogany. What's the best? What makes it best? What makes other wood cheap or poor quality? And is there a site online that can help to better explain why I want a better quality wood for my furniture and what in fact makes it better? I'm really hoping someone can help me out because I want to buy a nice quality bedroom set and I don't want to pay top dollar for junky furniture either. Thanks in advance.

The wood species is up to you, what do you like? If you choose a posted set, the posts should be solid wood. Any panels you choose can be veneered or solid. Veneer panels are much better than they used to be. The glues used are better and manufacturers are willing to stand behind them. Solid wood panels are beautiful but may require multiple glue joints to achieve adequate width. This can create inconsistent grain patterns. If you see something that looks good at the store, but when you get it it doesn't look so great, go back to the store and demand the display. They tend to show the best.

I need to sell our bedroom furniture set, but I have no idea what type of wood it is. My husband owned it before we got married and he doesn't even know! It looks like light oak, but with darker circles throughout it. He thinks they're called knots, but I cannot find anything online. If anyone has an idea, thanks!

Depending on the size of the 'circles' . . . the first thing that came to mind was "Birds-Eye Maple". The 'circles' are pretty small and literally look like birds' eyes on blonde colored wood. It's nice wood and certainly a much harder wood than pine. I think that pine has occasional 'circles' (pine knots) but usually more 'swirls' than knots. If you can make a small dent with your fingernail in an inconspicuous spot, then it is probably a 'soft wood' (such as pine). If not, i would think you are dealing with something other than pine wood.

I need to sell my bedroom set....king memory foam mattress, head and foot boards, nine drawer dresser with a mirror and two night stands with two drawers each.

I purchased the set in 2005 for $5000.00

The best thing to do is to get on to Craigs List, Backpage.com and Ebay. See what similar pieces are going for. There is no Blue Book value for furniture or mattresses. At best I would say you would be lucky to get 40 - 60 percent of origninal value.

I have a beautiful wood bedroom set that was in a house with a fire although the fire was in another part of the house the set has a horrible smoke odor,any suggestions on how to the odor out?

only way i can think of is to sand off all of the old finish, and re finish it

I am looking at purchasing a bedroom set for my son. I don't want the cheap chipboard drawers/fake wood. I have been pleased with my couch/loveseat from Ashley Furniture and thought I'd check it out. I can't find reviews anywhere that relate to their products, only people bitching about how long the delivery takes!! If anyone can attest to the quality of their "wood" furniture and durability for a kids room, please, let me know! (I don't want to hear about customer service or delivery, just QUALITY/DURABILITY)

It seems like we bought something from Ashley years ago but I can't remember what. Try this: Go to the store and look at what you want to buy. Ask the salesperson to help you and if he or she doesn't know and won't find out, ask for another salesperson or the manager. You want to know if the frame is wood or man-made materials. Is the finish applied to the wood or is it a thin veneer glued on. Pull out the drawers and see if they're glued, dovetailed, or merely stapled together. Be sure the finish on all pieces matches. How well do the pieces stand alone and not butted up against one another? This will tell you what you want to know without relying on someone else. Last, go with your gut. If something doesn't sound right or look right, ask about it.
