Solid Wood Bedroom Furniture

I'm looking for furniture makers/brands that make solid wood bedroom furniture without veneers, and preferably ones that use old-fashioned carpentry techniques like dovetails, mortise and tendon, etc... Also, on another note, is Broyhill a good furniture company? My sister is looking into getting the Fontana collection for her room and I wanted to check that out for her. I'm still trying to see if I can find solid hardwood furniture before I give up and go with something else that uses veneers. Thanks.

i would like to know what companies in the UK make good quality solid wood bedroom furniture. i would preferably like furniture which is quite traditional. also, what is a wood veneer? should i keep away from furniture which is made from a mix of solid wood and veneers?

oh i see, i understand now. i am thinking of something less rustic perhaps because i would like a dressing table, wardrobes and bdside tables to match. i will keep that in mind though. thanks

Veneer is a thin film of wood. Oak veneered furniture is usually made of particle board or softwood with just a thin covering of oak on the outside. Oak furniture will last hundreds of years. Veneered particle board will start to look scruffy after about five years.

Good quality oak furniture is usually handmade in small workshops and is very expensive. However, antique oak furniture (remember I said it lasts hundreds of years) is relatively cheap. For some reason, dark wood is out of favour. Have a look around the auction rooms and you may well find what you are looking for.

Hi, I don't know much about furniture other than saying something is cute or not, but I was told by a friend that I should stick with solid wood construction and avoid veneers, but I noticed that there are a lot of different varieties of wood used in different furniture sets. So far I've seen pine, maple, oak, alder, cherry, and mahogany. What's the best? What makes it best? What makes other wood cheap or poor quality? And is there a site online that can help to better explain why I want a better quality wood for my furniture and what in fact makes it better? I'm really hoping someone can help me out because I want to buy a nice quality bedroom set and I don't want to pay top dollar for junky furniture either. Thanks in advance.

The wood species is up to you, what do you like? If you choose a posted set, the posts should be solid wood. Any panels you choose can be veneered or solid. Veneer panels are much better than they used to be. The glues used are better and manufacturers are willing to stand behind them. Solid wood panels are beautiful but may require multiple glue joints to achieve adequate width. This can create inconsistent grain patterns. If you see something that looks good at the store, but when you get it it doesn't look so great, go back to the store and demand the display. They tend to show the best.

I am looking for a bedroom set. But the stuff I am seeing at the places like Leon's and The Brick are really not very good quality. I would like solid wood furniture, not all veneers.

Stoney Creek Furniture used to have a nice selection. Your best bet, though, would be to go through the Yellow Pages and ask questions.

If I still lived in southern Ontario, I'd go to Mennonite country or Niagara on the Lake and shop there. As it is, I live North, so our solid oak bedroom furniture was custom built to our specifications by a local carpenter. Not expensive ... doesn't show the dust ... and looks very nice.

I just purchased a bedroom suite about 4 months ago and discovered today that there are two, long, deep cracks in the bed posts. They were never there before. Why would the wood just crack like that? How do I prevent it from happening again?

I’ve made and sold thousands of pieces of furniture and cracking is always do to improper drying of the wood and a very dry environment can speed up the cracking. I’ve seen plenty of cracked up American made furniture as well as Chinese imports. It’s the experience of the maker, not the ethnicity of the maker. There are factories in China that are older than America. You can tell if the crack is new or old and just getting bigger by looking in the crack to see if there is stain in the crack or unfinished wood in the crack. Unfinished in crack means a new crack. The bed posts are likely from a subcontractor and likely all the bedposts will be doing the same thing. In my experience you should demand a replacement bed and a guarantee of replacement for at least 6 months. It’s going to do what it’s going to do within 6 months. Almost all mass produced furniture today is import which like everything else in this world can be awful or quite finely crafted.
