Solid Cherry Bedroom Furniture

Hi, I don't know much about furniture other than saying something is cute or not, but I was told by a friend that I should stick with solid wood construction and avoid veneers, but I noticed that there are a lot of different varieties of wood used in different furniture sets. So far I've seen pine, maple, oak, alder, cherry, and mahogany. What's the best? What makes it best? What makes other wood cheap or poor quality? And is there a site online that can help to better explain why I want a better quality wood for my furniture and what in fact makes it better? I'm really hoping someone can help me out because I want to buy a nice quality bedroom set and I don't want to pay top dollar for junky furniture either. Thanks in advance.

The wood species is up to you, what do you like? If you choose a posted set, the posts should be solid wood. Any panels you choose can be veneered or solid. Veneer panels are much better than they used to be. The glues used are better and manufacturers are willing to stand behind them. Solid wood panels are beautiful but may require multiple glue joints to achieve adequate width. This can create inconsistent grain patterns. If you see something that looks good at the store, but when you get it it doesn't look so great, go back to the store and demand the display. They tend to show the best.

Fine furniture maker Earl Nesbitt has designed and built custom made furniture out of solid wood since 1989.

One wall has a huge slidling glass door, one wall has a 72" mirrored closet door and the entry to bedroom are white french doors. So there are only 2 fully solid walls in the room, think it will still be too dark? HELP!!!
Baseboards and trim will be pure white, enough contrast and break with the cherry wood floors? Blinds over window are also white.

It wouldn't be too dark. You did say light chocolate after all. I wouldn't go distressed white anything, but I really hate that look. Mixing woods is not a bad thing. What about oak or maple furniture? The shade of brown isn't very dark. You also might cover or replace those mirrired closet doors. They're very out of date. Don't forget to add at least one bright accent color...orange? It can be part of a pattern on your drapes or bedspread, something small if you're not too sure about it.

When my parents were married, they bought some really nice sets of furniture. They were nice woods - solid cherry, mahogany, etc and handmade, I think in the USA for all of them. I love this stuff, but now it seems like the world is overrun with these big-box furniture stores... mass produced furniture from *somewhere* in the world, with plywood and particleboard and whatever else. It is frustrating.

Where can you buy fine furniture these days? Especially made in America. I'd love links and even recommendations of particular lines. Right now I'm looking for a bedroom suite, but would love to see anything that you think is the best of the best.

PS - I live in the Boston area (between Boston and New Hampshire) so if you have actual store recommendations for my area, I would welcome those too!

I know what you mean. I like the fine-crafted wood but I've never had the money to really go to a high-end store. I did find a great 100% mahogany bed at Bombay Company which I'm very happy with and found some matching nightstands and chest-of-drawers at an antique store. Sometimes it's just a matter of searching.

update - sorry, it looks like they filed Chapter 11 in September 2007. It's too bad since they had nice stuff.

I just upgraded my bedroom set and am looking for a new comforter, duvet cover or quilt to go on my new king sized bed. My new furniture is cherry and looks beautiful against my light green walls. I need some help for thinking of a color that would look good against the green. I prefer something solid but I am not opposed to some kind of print. I don't want a solid beige because it was what I had before and it just looked terribly bland. I would also love ideas for sheets that would match my new bedspread. Please help I am so bad at this!
I also love a solid white! But I do have cats that have claimed my bed for their own. Any suggestions on that dilemma?

There are several colors that you can choose from that works great with both the light green walls as well as the lusciously dark cherry furniture.

Pale yellow, lavender, pink and other shades of these colors. But it will depend on what ambiance you want to set in the room. Yellow or orange can get the room to look and feel earthly, etc.

You can still choose to have it in solid color if that's your style or preference. To make up for the monotony when it comes to having everything in solid colors, you can add decor to spark interest into the interior like paintings or photographs up on your wall, pretty throw rugs, and such.

You can also have it the quilt or duvet in solid color but with a big single, attention-grabbing print like a big flower...

Okay, so i just purchased a new home all our furniture is very modern granite counters and all that stuff, but the people who lived here before us painted the whole house the most hideous Colors ever... the master bedroom is a light pink and dark chocolate brown checkered and so is the other bedroom. Our bathroom is orange and baby blue with a terrible dark green " fake " tile, the hallways are some light orangy brown, kitchen yellow and ecru, and same with the living room
the whole house has Beautiful natural cherry wood floors except for our bathroom (which will be changed to a real white tile)

the majority of our furniture/decor is solid blacks whites dark stained woods and red/light pastel blues and silver


i really need ideas on what Colors should we paint over this crap

You can do all sorts of things with this. As the other guy said: "you can paint the walls white and hang colorful paintings or frames and such to create that 'pop''' (but personally I hate white walls, thats why mine are all covered with posters and such galore so I dont have to see the white walls). You can also go to a home improvement store with the colors of the furniture and show their paint specialist and they can help you to match or find a good compliment to the colors. I am also sure there is a website somewhere that could help you to find good complimenting colors (like emerald green and black, red and black, black and white, green and orange). I am not real keen on this but you could also think about doing the walls with some sort of wooden siding type stuff as well (you said most of the floor was cherry, might look good, might be too much wood, I dont know lol).

From the sounds of things you like bright colors so what I would probably do is go to the home improvement store, tell them your problem, tell them the colors of your furniture, tell them you would like bright colors to compliment your furniture, and go from there.
