I recently moved into a smaller home, and my kids are sharing a room. I have a 10yr old daughter and 6yr old son. I really want the room to look spacious despite the fact it isn't a large room. Also, I want it to be organized, comfy, and modern. Above all else, incorporate my kids own personal styles. My son really doesn't care too much but my daughter is now a pre-teen. I'm having a hard time finding a combination of colors that would blend well in the room together. (My daughter doesn't like pink, so that makes it easier) Any tips from paint, furniture, etc. would be greatly appreciated, thanks :-)

I am moving into my new bedroom soon and it is very (very!) much smaller than my last so at the moment I am stuck with only a few pieces of furniture. I am trying to find a theme, something that will look modern and that I can create with accessories, not by altering the room as I am renting.
I have a vintage desk with a slanted surface that folds out, and an old-style bed with a large curvy headboard. They are both dark brown, and the walls of the room are brick. I can add shelves and have a small inbuilt wardrobe space.
I need tips on how to modern up the place and add a theme that won't make me feel like I'm living in a daggy, old-fashioned kids room.
Any help is much appreciated!
Paint your furniture in a bright color and use fun fabrics.
Check out the before and after section on www.designsponge.com. They have lots of cool ideas on how to update vintage furniture.
One I really like is drawing a picture of something on the wood, then you paint everything around the picture. You end up with the wood grain picture showing through. Looks really cool.
Get a nice carpet and have cool art on the walls.

I need to get furniture for my townhouse, we have a three bedroom, two bath, and two kids. My husband and I like modern styled furniture, but don't know a good place to go to get quality furniture that will not fiberboard apart on us, yet will not break our bank account either. Does anybody know of an affordable place to get furniture for our house? We will be furnishing the kid's rooms, our room, the living room, and the dining room. For a reference point we currently live in Virginia. We will be moving overseas next October, but we need the furniture now! A futon and air mattress is not cutting it, and the kids have outgrown their crib!
Ikea is junk. Slumberland is more expensive, but it's not K-Mart quality junk that will break quickly. Ikea stuff lasts about 5 years, maybe 6 or 7 years max, while Slumberland stuff lasts forever...

Every time I eat carbs too close to bedtime I toss and turn all night with this same themed dream. I'm always walking through a huge old home I am considering buying. The home is never laid out like a normal home, it has big elaborate bathrooms with bathtubs the size of small swimming pools and walk in closets were one wouldn't expect one and often has more than one kitchen. The bedrooms usually have 2 to 3 doors leading off to long hallways or sitting rooms. I also usually have a bunch of kids with me discussing which room will be theirs. Last night it was the cast of High School Musical. The kids usually have a lot of pets with them too, the girl who writes the music in the show found a mama cat and her litter and was going to keep them in her rooms. A couple of dogs were running around while we were looking at the house. The homes are also always furnished with the previous owners stuff usually weird stuff like a whole bookcase holding a collection of various ruby slippers make of glass and ceramic. Stuff is usually lightly dusty but not cob webby. The furniture is usually really great old stuff made of real wood and the kitchen appliances vary, sometimes brand new modern and other times really old and rusty. Sometimes I go up into the unfinished attic and some of the wood is all rotted and crumbling but can be replaced so it doesn't effect the value of the home. I usually don't care about my dreams and forget them really quick but I've been having these same ones for almost a year now and I feel it's just too much to be a random dream.
Don't eat carbs one day before going to bed.
