I was in Pickering,ON,CA today visiting a cousin and his Birthday is coming up, so I want to finish his new house for him, and I went to Amish Furniture redesigned it was REALLY, REALLY GREAT, it was wonderful. If I don't get any results I will definitely buy from there, and his bedroom from Bombay(the store not Bombay,India) (btw, any reviews about that?).
i usually purchase my furniture from this solid wood furniture store: http://www.furniture-cn.com
the furniture products there are beautiful and antique.
Amish Furniture
So a few weeks ago I posted a question about problems I am having with my mother-in-law; she wants to purchase a crib for us; but NOT the crib that I want the crib that SHE wants. Well, I thought I finally won when she went to the Amish Furniture store and found out that a crib would be $1300 and a tiny very tiny 3 drawer chest would be an additional $850 plus $250 for a hutch on top. She called one evening and said she wasn't sure if she wanted to spend that much money on a crib and it might cause problems later on when her other kids have kids if she doesn't get their kids the same things. So she said she might just give us like $1000 to purchase the crib that WE want. So I was overjoyed when she told me that. Well, tonight I called her to ask for ideas for a Christmas gift for her mom and while on the phone I asked if she was going to give us money or what for the crib because I have about 13 1/2 weeks (possibly less if I have to get a scheduled c-section) before our daughter is born; and I want a dresser in the house after the shower so I can put away clothes and blankets and all that good stuff and get ready for our little girl's birth.
So I wrote her the following letter but I have not emailed it yet; what do you guys think? Does it sound okay?
Dear (Mother-in-law name)
I would really like to thank you for the offer to buy us a crib; however I feel like I am not being heard when I tell you what I want. Yes, the crib from the Amish store is nice however it is not what I want. Nor do I want to spend that much money for a dresser and the additional furniture I need for the nursery. I want to have a dresser and a changing table in the nursery right away. If I do not have a dresser where will I put the baby's clothes & her blankets? I have nothing for any of that and I can't see spending $800 for a tiny three drawer chest; it just doesn't make sense to me.
Again I want to thank you for your offer to purchase a crib for our daughter but if you can't accept that I don't want the Amish furniture then I have to decline your offer. I hope that this doesn't upset you, but we have decided on the furniture that we want for our nursery and it is the Sorelle Sophia set that we found online. Both of us think that it will make a great bedroom set for our daughter and it is something she will have for life; plus we can purchase a three piece set for what the Amish crib would cost. This is the crib that we want and that our daughter will be getting. http://www.simplybabyfurniture.com/11437 9h6h8.html
Iris- you brought up a good point, she also thinks I have to get an old fashioned wicker bassinet when I have registered for a pack 'n play and plan on having baby sleep in that in our room when we first bring her home. I told my husband again tonight he's just going to have to tell her to back off!! I know it's her first grandbaby but it's OUR first child!
Djeter- I have told her numerous times, showed her printouts, etc. of what we want and it seems being friendly doesn't work so I am going to try a different approach.
How am I being selfish? I think considering it is our first daughter that my husband and I should pick what we want for our baby. He doesn't want to spend that much money on furniture & I have shown him photos and not told him which crib was what and he picked the same crib as me. I think she is being selfish and taking away from this experience...it's our first baby and we should pick out what makes us happy. Just like she hates the name Rylee which is what we have decided on & every time I see her she is telling me names that SHE likes & I am like yeah thats nice; smile and go on because we have decided on the name & yet again this is our daughter so it should be our final decision on everything.
Well I don't have any children yet and Im not married but my future mother-in-law drives me up a wall sometimes and I couldn't imagine being pregnant and having to deal with issues, good luck to you! But from what I read your letter is formal almost business like and doesn't sound like your talking to family, personally I wouldn't send it. To me it comes across kind of harsh even though you thanked her a few times. E-mails are so tricky to read and can be interpreted in many different ways. I don't know the kind of person she is but your letter is like having evidence against you and who's to say she wouldn't copy and paste in some other comments and show it around making you look bad. If it were me I'd talk to my husband about it then the 2 of us would sit and talk to her about our feelings but not sound like we are ganging up on her, that would be really bad. Just tell her how you feel that your very thankful but you had your heart set on this other one instead. I was always taught to sandwich criticism between praise so you start and end on a good note but get your point across. It just sounds like shes is just excited and wants to help out, be apart of the whole process. Maybe suggest that you weren't looking to spend so much money on the crib/dresser set that the extra money could be put to better use as in purchasing another necessity you need? Good Luck
My room is a smallish medium 12x15, however I am an artistic, ocd/ packrat that needs some major help before my mom goes balistic on my for the state of my room and before I go crazy because it isn't perfect. We recently redid my room back in december- wall color and bed coverings etc. but I didn't get any new furniture because I don't really need it.. I am the kind of person that if someone doesn't want a good piece of furniture and I see a use I'll take it hence I have a lot of furniture in my room.. I am willing to part with some of it if I know my room will be organized and functional.
What my room needs to be functional for:
1. doing homework
2. sleeping (of course)
3. reading
4. writing and painting as well as other artistic mediums
5. storage
6. be able to store my massive avalanch of clothes
Furniture that I currently have in my room:
1. lateral futon (bed) - instead of opening out like a normal futon the ends move up and down to create a couch or a bed ( must stay)
2. nightstand (I made and it must stay)
3. desk chair/ desk - must stay
4. extra chair
5. reading chair (must stay)
6. book shelf (must stay)
7. portable shelving unit ( I got this from my grandparents but I'm not sure if i really need it in my room - maybe for storage???)
8. a small storage unit on wheels
9. side table
10. bean bag
11. a small shelving unit
12. hamper (obviously it must stay but it does collaspe)
13. movable/ take apart shelving unit
14. vanity/dresser - I recently took the mirror off but I can put it back on- from my great uncle
15. My huge amish made dress that is adorable and I have had it since I was little (must stay)
- the bean bag is currently out of my room but idk if I want it back in or not...
I also have tons of posters paintings and artwork on my walls as well as corkboards.
* any tips or suggestions would be helpful
I can't up load a picture due to a broken camera but the room has a little enterance way( a little square 4x4 ft) before the main room the closet is on the wall with the enterance and the window is on the opposite wall
any ideas on how to arrange my room or how to make it more organized are both needed
* my room theme is aqua, brown and lime green - and unfortunately I have a purple carpet from when it was my sisters room that I can't change
opps! yea I meant dresser
Sounds to me like you are on the road to hoarding my dear! Some of your language is concerning: You call yourself OCD, a packrat and you have implied perfectionistic. This is a recipe for hoarding...you impulsively collect, obsessively try to manage it, but eventually you will give up since you can't control it perfectly. This is how a lot of people on TV got where they are with their hoarding. But not only that: all your "must stay" items, your immense collection of storage pieces and shelves, your tendency to collect things that other people don't want (and my guess is they know they can unload on you), and your massive avalanche of clothes.
If not already you are going to wind up with problems. I think you might need to find someone you trust who can help you get out from under it all and help you decide what is really important. Maybe a professional.
It is good that you have listed the functions of the room. That will go a long way toward helping you decide what to keep in the room. Small space design is efficient...you want your stuff to double up whenever possible. From what I see, you can use your futon for both chillout/entertaining, as well as reading, and sleeping. Your fav of the chairs might be able to be nearby for a conversation area. Your night stand can be in between the chair and the futon with a light, maybe this goes in a corner. Your dresser can hold your clothing but its surface can be used as a sorter for your makeup and other hair and getting ready items. Your desk can double as a work table for your creative projects. If you put your bookshelf nearby, it can help you store your homework supplies, maybe your printer and stuff.
The rest of your furniture (all the shelving items) might be useful to you now but you should really look at all your belongings, the little stuff that needs storage. After thinning it out, you won't need so much to hold it all.
AND no one needs a mountain of clothing. Really, what you need, even as a fun happy teen girl is nice quality pieces that you love to wear, fit, are stylish, and are versatile. Every piece you have should go with at least 4-5 other things in your closet to keep things interesting without needing so many garments. And your clothes should fit in your closet and your one dresser. Pare down until they do.

What Amish Furniture Stores Offer
Best Quality Raw Materials – Amish furniture stores offer furniture that is made from the best quality raw materials available. Hard woods that are known for their durability and solidity as well as good looks are sourced after checking for quality and suitability for the piece of furniture that is to be made. The raw material is then carefully seasoned and prepared before fashioning into furniture. There is none of the particle board and ply and other flimsy and cost cutting measures that are used for making furniture. Oak furniture is becoming increasingly more rare as furniture makers look to cut costs and slash prices. Amish furniture makers refuse to compromise and therefore use Oak in many of their projects. Real Oak materials provide a beauty and sturdiness that cannot be found in faux materials. Other wood styles can be implemented as well with Amish craftsmanship. Also a lot of the processes of construction are done using old fashioned tools and very little mechanization. Since the Amish traditions forbid use of modern technology the use of machinery is kept to a minimum when making the furniture. Many hand tools are still used for the making of the handcrafted furniture. In particular, many of the finishing processes that Amish furniture makers use are done by hand, so that each of the pieces of furniture created are made the old fashioned way, little altered from the time and way that their forefathers worked. Amish handcrafted furniture is often referred to as heirloom furniture, for the reason that the furniture is extremely long lasting neither breaking nor losing its looks and luster for years to come. This is the sort of furniture that you can buy and then be assured that you will not have to make another similar investment for a very long time to come. This furniture can literally be passed on from generation to generation. Classic Designs – The designs that the Amish use are timeless classics that appear never to go out of style. So when you buy furniture today, it looks fresh and current today as well as some years down the line; this is not the sort of design that will appear dated and out of fashion in a few years. Though the Amish do keep pace with times and offer contemporary designs, the designs are not slaves to fashion and so remain 'in' for all times to come.
